Brewers GM David Stearns talked about the upcoming offseason in the wake of his club’s Wild Card loss, with Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel among those to cover the proceedings.
Despite the disappointing end, it was obviously another successful campaign, as the Brewers charged late and again reached the postseason despite losing superstar Christian Yelich. But the club won’t be able to rest on its laurels, as there are a variety of decisions to be made right out of the gates.
As Stearns puts it, he and his front office has “some important questions” that will need to be answered. Every offseason has its own “narrative,” he said, and it’s still not clear what path this one will take.
The first call that has to be made involves corner infielders Eric Thames ($7.5MM club option, $1MM buyout) and Travis Shaw (arbitration eligible). Stearns said he hasn’t reached any decision on Thames, who had a productive season with the bat and seems a reasonable value at that price. As for Shaw, whose season was a disaster, Stearns says the club will “spend a lot of effort internally determining what to do” in advance of the non-tender deadline.
The Shaw situation ties in to the Brewers’ slate of departing free agents, which includes several key players. Infielder Mike Moustakas could replace Shaw, though he’ll likely require a bigger commitment to retain than he commanded on the open market last winter. And then there’s Yasmani Grandal, who had a highly productive year behind the plate and will leave a big hole. Stearns was happy to acknowledge that he’d “love to have both of them back.” Will it happen? “Whether the realities of the market permit that and whether the realities of the free-agent market permit that is something we will have to evaluate as we go through the off-season.”
Likewise, a pair of key hurlers will be available to all teams. Mid-season trade acquisitions Jordan Lyles and Drew Pomeranz. Stearns called the pair “unbelievable” and said he’d be interested in returns in both cases. “They both contributed a lot to this club and I’m sure we’ll be in contact with them,” said Stearns.
There’s no shortage of other roster issues to be addressed. The Brewers’ creative pitching strategies will again be tested. Stearns said he isn’t ready to say precisely how hurlers such as Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, and Brent Suter will be used next year, though he did note that “we tend to blur lines between starters and relievers anyways.” And it certainly sounds as if the Brewers will at least be interested in exploring ways of supplementing (if not supplanting) Orlando Arcia at shortstop. Stearns says the team “need[s] better overall production” from that spot, though he added that he believes Arcia is “a better player than he showed this year” and that the incumbent could still represent the necessary solution.

I hope the Brewers resign Moose, Lyles, Pomeranz. Move Suter to a starter which gives Woodruff, Houser, Lyles, Suter and ?. Then move Braun to first with Shaw.Let Grisham take over in Left. Sign Iglesias to compete with Arcia at short. Keep Spang over Perez. Sign D’arnaud to platoon with Nottingham
2id
I would rather have Thames over Shaw to platoon with Braun. I’m predicting they give Burnes another chance to make the rotation.
Yeetus
Eh this season was a fluke for the Brewers. They will be perenerial world series contenders the next five years. Yelich is better than Trout. I put the over under at 105 wins next season.

Terrible attempt at trolling.

Would rather see them a Jason Castro type catcher than pursing Grandal again. Spend that money on Moose, and Wheeler.
IjustloveBaseball
Not a half-bad idea. Grandal is likely going to be seeking a deal of at least 3yrs-45m, and I think that’s being conservative. He’s a solid all-around catcher for sure, but the Brewers would be better off spreading their funds, rather than forking out for a catcher on the wrong side of 30.
2id
Right. As much as you like getting the production he brings out of the C slot, I think the money would be better spent on arms, either starters or bullpen.

@Dakota Bramer
Grandal is a lot better than solid.. He’s undoubtedly the best or second best catcher in baseball. Power, OBP and defense. If he can be had for 3/$45 then they should jump on it. He’s been healthy for most of the last few years., He’s a young 30. 30 doesn’t mean he’ll drop dead in 2 years. He seems to be entering his best season. A 3 year deal is safe imo. With a sketchy staff you should want a good receiver.
gregstruth89
Dray. This is your time to shine with your great baseball wisdom. Who will you tell everyone that sucks on the brewers? I can’t wait to hear what you write
afsooner02
Get rid of Shaw
Keep Thames
Pay moose
Yaz is gone
Keep lyles if he’ll agree to good terms
Try to keep pomeranz
Overhaul rest of bullpen
Move Suter to starter
Jimmy Nelson to long relief
Hader needs a better off speed pitch
Start working yeli extension asap. Do what you can to lock him up for 6ish years….whatever it takes….within reason.
brewcrewenthusiast
I agree with this. except I’d rather fork up for grandal and fill third base with whoever.

Grandal will be a lot more expensive than Moose. Pony up the money for Moose. Something to be said about clubhouse chemistry

In season pitching acquisition strategy or ‘Flooding the Zone’ worked remarkably well. Gave up a potentially useful piece in Dubon for Ray Black & Pomeranz. The latter impending FA Pomeranz is going to command a big deal. Easily slots in as 3rd best available FA lefthanded reliever after Aroldis Chapman & Will Smith. Dare I say I see some Andrew Miller career arc here?
Dealing Cody Ponce for Lyles was a brilliant move. After another strong season he could command more than the $2.15M the Pirates gave to pry him away from Milwaukee last offseason.
Safe bet he resigns. Jury still out in the Jake Faria acquisition.
Finished 18th in Runs Per Game. And that’s with an offensive force at Catcher. Lack production at Short is a glaring concern. Moustakas is a critical resign. Shift him to 3rd and with Hiura there’s 2 impact bats on the dirt. Replacing Grandal’s production would be next to impossible. Do past PED issues hurt his ability to land multiple yr desls? Do teams want Grandal to be continuing to chase next Yrs check?
A lineup can carry mediocre production at 1 up the middle position in exchange for elite D. Issue is Brewers carry Arcis and Cain is regressing. Corners don’t fill the gap.
Brewers need sticks. Might be smart to get platoon oriented but need to leverage resources to keep their own and make subtle upgrades.
Budget is the critical question.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I think you’re reaching a bit to far in attempting to talk a Grandal market crash again. Nobody cares about PED suspensions as evidence by extensions, trades, & business of baseball. Especially considering it was such a long time ago. Conventional wisdom seems pretty overwhelming that Grandal was probably only going to get one opportunity to receive a pay day. So same to the second question, no it probably means nothing. It seemed that the QO, and somewhat recency bias of performance played a bigger portion in the offseason. Even then, he obtain a 60+/4. The more relevant question becomes whether or not the Brewers are willing to be at the front of the market.
sigmanj
Socrates Curveball…excellent overall evaluation.
Phattey
Just resign grandal and get starting pitching it ain’t that complex
weo
Hiura is the worst defensive 2nd baseman in the history of the Brewers. He needs to go to left.
MannyPineappleExpress9
Rickie Weeks was a butcher there for years.
Tim Newport
I believe they have an $8 mil option on Chase Anderson…use the money on Lyles instead. Thames production from the 1b slot was so so at best. Grandal will be impossible to replace…pay the man…Shaw may bounce back, so offer him a contract loaded with incentives.
The Brewers have realized that middle relievers are generally cheaper but more effective in the middle innings than mid level starters. The free agent starters that they can afford, they don’t want.
Karlander
Who is Stearns kidding? They will be cheapskates and let Grandal and Moose go elsewhere. Such a shame. Thames and Moose have been a great Brewers; cool ball players. Brewers could be in real trouble next year if they let too much of their great core slip away. Shaw has to go now ,a total dud.
crazylarry
The Brewers will be the Brewers. Not spend a dime on a game changer and bring in low end cheap talent as the window narrows.
2id
You mean game changers like Darvish and Kimbrel?
brewsingblue82
I like Thames, but I say buyout his option, non tender Shaw and use that money elsewhere, like to resign Moose and acquire others. If they can resign Thames on a friendlier multi year deal, that’d be great, but even though 7.5 mil might be a steal, they can still use that money for more pressing needs. But I’d definitely like to see Moose resign. Yaz I wouldn’t mind but I’m certain he’ll be out of their range. Lyles as long as he’s on a reasonable deal. Same with Pomeranz. But they can definitely put the 10+ mil from Thames/Shaw to better use.
BrewCrew82
I don’t get the love affair with Suter as a starter. Hes a fast working, soft tossing, hope you get 5 innings guy that the brewers have a plethora of. Priority should go to a 3 yrs deal to bring back Grandal to help keep developing this pitching staff. Moose brings good chemistry but should not bring in that much money. Hes a 250 straight pull hitter with fringe defense and shouldn’t command more than 12/ year or let him flail in free agency again. Brewers were awful with RISP and didn’t break the Mendoza line in run differential until after Yelich was hurt. Can go after a high side pitcher but let’s not pretend the offense is great.
neilyo89
I agree. I like Suter out of the bullpen. He is a great change of pace guy and can get you a couple clean innings. As a starter I think he is going to run into trouble the second and third time though the order. Cut Albers and Suter can easily replace his so called production in the pen.
twentyforty
Good luck blurring the lines in September this year with only a 28-man roster. Face it, the window of bullpenning with waves of two-pitch pitchers is over. Better sign some pitchers that can give you length in September going forward.
stubby66
True but still doesn’t mean you cant call up or send down pitchers to rotate them
2id
Who’s to say they won’t address that this off-season? Pretty sure Stearns is fully aware of the changes to the roster. The last couple of seasons, he took full advantage of the depth, hence “bullpenning”. Not like other teams couldn’t implement it either. No need to be so salty just because your Cubs are overrated.
MannyPineappleExpress9
Because the last 2 seasons proved that Hader, Burnes, Nelson, Guerra, Peralta and Suter don’t have that ability, right?
baumann
Resign Moose, Lyles, Pomeranz. Pick up Thames’s option. Non-tender Shaw. Save the money from letting Grandal walk and go after Gregorius or Keuchel. If it’s not Keuchel, try to sign another mid-tier SP like Michael Pineda.
Arcia is garbage, and the biggest SS upgrade on the open market is Gregorius. While I like Grandal a lot, I don’t think investing four years in him is a wise commitment for a team like the Brewers.
lambeau gang
Yo, can Shaw/Moose learn catcher? Because Yasmani ain’t coming back.
Robertguyette
Your roster is set in the OF. Which allows you to move Braun to 1st. Thames and Shaw will require about the same money to keep due to Shaw’s arbitration number last year. Both are low Avg lefties with power. I actually prefer to keep Shaw who is much better defensively and can then back up 1st, 2nd and 3rd. That allows us to keep Spange as the other back up who can beca defensive replacement, pinch runner, designated hunter. That will provide some value. That means Perez is gone. But his never take a pitch, long swing approach can’t be in a line up ever. Even as a fill in. This requires us to re up Moose. Arcia’s glove covers for the weak bat. Grandal could also come back as multi year…but only with the idea of him taking over 1b at some point. You can’t plan to pay him big money to be catching at 33 years old.
