The Giants interviewed Athletics quality control coach Mark Kotsay for their vacant managerial position Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle relays (Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported the Giants’ interest in Kotsay last week). Although Kotsay’s the only known outside candidate the Giants have interviewed thus far — it appears bench coach Hensley Meulens has already had a sit-down — president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has indicated they’ll likely speak with to six eight individuals in their search to replace Bruce Bochy. Kotsay and Zaidi entered the process with at least some familiarity, as the latter was a member of the A’s front office when the former was an outfielder with the club from 2004-07.
- Little is known about where the Pirates stand in their hunt for a manager, but they are at least “wide open” in their approach, according to Heyman. Pirates special assistant of baseball operations Jeff Banister and Twins bench coach Derek Shelton have been connected to the job more than any other potential candidates, Heyman notes. However, it’s unclear whether the Bucs have interviewed either of them or anyone else since they fired Clint Hurdle on Sept. 29.
- The Rangers are set to hire Cody Atkinson as their new minor league hitting coordinator, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. He’ll take over for Josue Perez, who filled the role for five years and will likely move to a different position with the Rangers, per Grant. Atkinson is just 30 years old, though he does bring an impressive resume to the table. He operates a Seattle-based hitting academy, worked as the Reds’ run production and hitting assessment coach for the past year, and comes with a background in kinesiology. His hiring is an example of the Rangers putting “more emphasis on retooling hitters’ swings using technology and biomechanics as aides,” Grant writes.
- The Mets and minor league field coordinator Kevin Morgan are parting ways, Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports tweets. New York offered to reassign Morgan, but he made the decision to exit, according to Ehalt. It was a long run with the Mets for Morgan, a minor league infielder with the organization from 1994-97 who began working in front office and coaching roles for the club in ’98.
bballblk
They won’t even consider 6’7 individuals?!
yourmomsbox
very good!
Hiro
Nice one lol
scjohn92
so Doug Fister is a candidate?
clepto
Quality catch. Nice job.
bjhaas1977
Was Morgan offered a promotion or a demotion?
SFGiants74
Kotsay seems more like a GM candidate. Farhan and Sabean are running the show. He doesn’t have enough experience to be thrown in with a team that has veterans. He seems like someone that they can groom.
hopper15
Sabean is not running the show.
SFGiants74
He is basically their lead scout, something is very good at. For a team that is in desperate need of young talent, that puts him high up on the pecking order.

Pirates only interviewed a usher and a beer vendor waiting for who ever works the cheapest such a pitiful owner and organization
frustratedpittsburghpiratesfan
This is so true. I find it interesting that MLB is supportive of smaller markets talents being often used to support pipeline to larger markets. MLB needs a hard salary cap ( min and max). The large markets have large media dollars so, it won’t happen anytime soon. Sad that on Opening Day 2020 over 25 percent of teams have little or no chance to compete for World Series.
clepto
Umm. Twins, Rays, Brewers and Oak would like to have a word with you. FYI, thats than 50% of the playoff teams.
The Dodgers would like to speak with you on a different matter.
clepto
and I dont disagree with your notion of a salary cap and floor, the primary issue in pittsburgh is not ownership. it is gross inability to adapt to a changing game due to ego, and acceptance of mediocrity and status quo. More dollars would be nice but when you have locker room discontent, old theory, a fat head trainer coupled high injury days, and obvious many examples of thriving pitchers once leaving PIT, the owner cheapness moves down the list. That team needs an exorcism in the FO, starting with Neil….and until that happens, the cheapness of the owner is a back burner issue. This is backed by the many, many low market teams that succeed during reg season and some have won the WS.
The purge in PIT is not complete if you ask me. 2 to 3 more to go.

It absolutely is ownership. There’s no sense of urgency to win due to financial constraints. This after 30+ years of irrelevance. How many star players have the Pirates traded away over the years? All because they can’t afford to resign them. They either need to commit to winning at some point, or sell the team. Or maybe the MLB should force a move.
clepto
Wrong.
And it isnt 30+ years of irrelevance.
And MLB will not force the owner to sell.
Agree there is limited sense of urgency but that is caused by accepting status quo. One could argue team is profitable enough. If owner wants to win bad enough, they put out more money or place higher expectations. Raising expectations is relatively inexpensive. He doesnt even do that.

I think the Giants should consider Austin Slater as their next player-manager. Slater is smarter than anyone else on the Giants organization.
Also. Slater is very serviceable. I’m sure if Slater was given the chance he would be able to pitch. Most teams would love to have someone like Austin Slater. Let Slater Shine SF………….
imgman09
You Obviously you have a crush on him!
Well business wise he better step up sooner than later, probably going to be a Utility/Bench Guy
BasesLoaded
He’s so hot. His strikeout rate is 30% with 5 HR Power. What is there not to like? Don’t make me pull out WAR and OPS numbers. U don’t want to go there. Did you know Austin Slater’s exit velocity was second to Aaron Judge for outfielders prior to September?
talking baseball
Bases loaded, let everyone know when you sober up !!
BasesLoaded
LOL. I was just mocking those who wouldn’t shut up about the bum. Two guys here told me about a month ago that I was going to have to deal with Austin Slater whether I liked it or not because he was our best outfielder and first baseman.
Do PicklesBreaches and WillClark something still post here?
Strike Four
Bro, there’s like 50 posts a day on this site, are you seriously keeping tabs on what people sounding off in anon comments sections say? Like, does that info really stay with you? Why?? There’s so much more you could be doing with your time.
Get a life man, I cannot stand posters who “call out” other posters on silly interactions on here that no one outside of you cares about. Grow up, no one cares, you win nothing, shut up or talk baseball, not about what posters who you dont know argue you with you about months ago. Let it go. Grow.
callingoutdummies247
You must be loaded or his mom
BasesLoaded
Just callingoutdummies who would wouldn’t stop talking about how good Slater is. Dorks at Reddit are saying they rather trade Pillar because of his obp and go with better options like Austin Slater, lol.
Strike Four
Stop. Caring. So. Much.

I have a feeling that the Bucs will announce Bannister’s hiring as manager before we hear the names of anyone they “interview”.
h0wmyd0ing
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Why hire Bannister if the Hurdle messaging was tired. Doesn’t make sense.
Frosted Lemonade
That’s the Pirates for ya. They’ve been making bonehead moves for a while now. I’m sure Neal will run the data through the simulator and find that Bannister is the man for the job.
batty
It’s always fun to guess who will be the ext manager of a team, but it’s still a bit early. There are still 4 teams fighting in the playoffs and that means there are still some potential candidates that FO’s can’t interview yet. For instance, i’m expecting Stubby Clapp to get some interviews whenever the Cards run ends.
Bochys Retirement Fund
As I depart I saw we left Farhan start from the ground up.
Kotsay for my old position. Eric Chavez for hitting coach. Tim Hudson as pitching coach. Zito will play sweet dad rock covers in the locker room, while Giambi will assist players looking to inject protein shakes.
metsie1
Sounds like Brodie Van Wagenen is evaluating everything in the Mets organization and is seeking to make changes where he doesn’t like how it works. Happens all the time elsewhere. Nothing wrong with that. He isn’t here to make friends.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Tony De Francesco for Mets Manager. Experience: 14 years managing a the AAA level. Overall winning percentage there: .554. That translates to averaging a 90 win big league season, over 14 years. Why not give the guy a shot? Had lots of bug leaguers over those years: josh Donaldson, Carlos Correa, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil. Sad that they push more inexperienced managerial names. Tommy LaSorda took over after Walter Alston retired. What happened to giving the man who paid his dues a chance? You cant beat his “numbers”.
