OCT. 30: Price is indeed the favorite for the position, reports Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Rothschild is still in the mix, Breen adds, but Price is believed to be the front-runner.
OCT. 29: Former Reds manager Bryan Price is a legitimate candidate to become the Phillies’ pitching coach, Jim Salisbury and Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia report. New manager Joe Girardi revealed Monday the Phillies have already conducted “a couple of interviews” with pitching coach hopefuls, though it’s unclear if they’ve spoken with Price.
A Price hiring for the Phillies may not be imminent, but it’s worth noting he just rejected the Diamondbacks’ interest in him for their pitching coach position. Price has talked to the Red Sox in regards to their vacancy, meanwhile, but it looks as though they’ll select Dave Bush over him.
If the Phillies truly do want to hire Price, it appears the stars are aligning for that to happen. However, the Phillies could still consider other candidates – perhaps including Larry Rothschild – per Salisbury and Seidman. Rothschild came available Monday after a long run as the pitching coach for the Yankees, originally joining the team when Girardi, then New York’s manager, hired him in 2011.
The 57-year-old Price would bring extensive experience to Girardi’s staff in Philly. Before managing Cincinnati from 2014-18, Price held pitching coach roles for the Mariners (2000-06), D-backs (2007-09) and Reds (2010-13). Whether the Phillies choose Price or someone else, that individual will be taking over a pitching staff that failed in 2019 on account of a combination of subpar performances and injuries. As a result of their woes this season, the deep-pocketed Phillies seem likely to focus on giving their next pitching coach more to work with in 2020 than the ousted Chris Young had at his disposal this year.

Nooooooo! As a Phillies fan I much rather see them go out and get Larry Rothschild to reunite with Girardi since they likely already have a good rapport
rgreen
Regardless of who they go with,it’s nice that there’s good experienced options out there for them.
Eightball611
Experienced sure but not on a winning team.
rgreen
The Reds weren’t winning with Price as manager, but he was the pitching coach on winning teams in Cincinnati,Arizona and Seattle.
wordonthestreet
Good point rgreen
herecomethephillies2018
Yeah Rothchild hasn’t coached for any winning teams either…
rgreen
Nobody was saying anything bad about Rothschild though,m y point was that there’s multiple options with respectable pedigrees, and that goes beyond those 2.
rsmlbtr
The relationship may be there but Bryan price may very well be the best pitching coach there’s been this millennium. I won’t complain to long about Rothschild but I couldn’t believe price spent last year unemployed.
redsfan48
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say Bryan Price and Derek Johnson are two of the, say, 5 best pitching coaches of the millennium. I know some will probably say I’m biased toward the Reds, but look what the pitching staffs have done under those two coaches (not just their Reds tenures, but everywhere).

They should go ahead and mimic what the Flyers did,get the former Ny manager/coach,and then get 2 other former managers to assist him….They could do that with Price or John Farrell as pc,and then get Clint Hurdle as hc.
WubbaLubbaDubDub
Already have Manual re-upped as HC. But that still fits your model.
gibbs58
No, they haven’t.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Won’t make much of a difference who our pitching coach is unless Klentak improves the starting rotation. I like a lot of our bullpen arms (i.e. when healthy) and I think both Seranthony Dominguez and Adam Morgan will be back by Spring Training.
Hope Cigar Guy spends some cheese on FA, Gerrit Cole. Would like to see another FA pitcher, Zach Wheeler, in a Phillies uniform, as well.
I think Velasquez and Pivetta are better suited to be relief pitchers. I have a good feeling about Eflin. He did well over his last half dozen or starts. There’s some big time talent there with him.
rgreen
Cole Hamels was a homegrown talent, and they signed Cliff Lee while they were considered strong championship contenders…They were the only times the Phillies have really gone long term with pitchers.Even Roy Halladay only got 3 years from them.Cole would be nice, but the Phillies philosophy on investing in free agent pitchers, and Coles preference to play on the west coast, might make that connection a tough sell.
T_Rexx2
Well that was 10 years ago and there’s a different front office, and now Middleton is running the show on who to sign for the big guys. So we really don’t know what their thought is for pitching.
slider32
Agreed, they need to upgade the starting pitching and land either Cole, or Wheeler. I think they can upgrade their pen by coping the Astro pen. Get pitchers that throw out of different windows to give the hitters different looks. Guys like James, Smith, and Harris.
Mr. Sarcasm
I think Pivetta and VV are suited for working behind the counter at an auto parts store or a tattoo parlor.
PhilsPhan
I was just about to make a similar snarky comment. Those two had more than their fair share of chances. They suck. It’s time to move on.
socalbum
Saying no the Dbacks — Price is a smart guy
phillyballers
Gut feel is we see Odorizzi + another FA/trade. Doubt they land Cole, Wheeler is injury prone, and Stras is a diva that will be overpriced.
Woods Rider
Agreed Phillyballers. The Phillies are more than one starter away from contention, let alone a WS. They could spend the same money they would on Cole and go get Odirizzi and bring back Cole Hamels on a short deal to wrap up his career. Perhaps maybe Ryu in that mix as well.
They might also be able to take some of that money and also sign Moustakas for 3B on a two year deal until they are 100% sure Bohm is ready.
This team is just more than a Cole and Rendon away from being good and IMO, the money can be spent better on other things.
ForestCobraAL
Gerrit Cole, Nola, Arrieta, Eflin and Velasquez.
Rendon at 3B.
PhilsPhan
Arrieta and VV do not belong in the starting rotation.
rsmlbtr
This is a big if, but I think Jake can still be real solid if he stays healthy.
imindless
Pretty bad rotation. Cole wont be on the phillies aswell.
CoachSantoni
Phillies Starting pitchers next season
Cole, Nola, Hamels, Arrieta, Howard, Eflin,
DadsInDaniaBeach
I see Cole out west..Spencer Howard needs to spend some time in Lehigh Valley… I’ve watched a lot of him on YouTube.. Real hope there…..goes from 97mph to 77 with his breaking stuff..I hope he has the maturity to make it in the bigs…..
Woods Rider
Some time at LHV should give us a clue. I agree with you, no need to rush him along. Get him some AAA experience and see how he does. Same with Bohm.
I do as well have high hope for both of them.,
larryb
dont do it as a redsfan he is terrible
Nick Hogan
Also as a Reds fan, I disagree. Terrible manager, sure. Excellent pitching coach.
burtgummer
Absolutely he’s a good pitching coach
slider32
Teams need pitching coaches that can relay information from metrics like rapsoto machines and other metrics. The ability to do that along with running a pitching staff. For Girardi to be successful he needs a top pitcher like Cole, and revamp the relief pitching, by getting pitchers like Betances, Smith, and Harris., all are free agents this winter.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Just a additional $.02c worth..
Instead of Rendon, spend the stupid money on arms, and let Alec Bohm start at 3rd base..no way he does any worse than Mickel Franco has done..Bohm might not be much of a glove there, but the kid can flat out hit that round white thing..
T_Rexx2
I think he takes the job by the end of the year but they’ll sign a stopgap for this year. Someone like a moustakas.
DannyQ3913
Don’t want Cole, his arm is gonna fall off
philsphan1979
This is guy that dropped like 72-74 F-bombs when he was a reds manager during a press conference…I LOVE IT! we need a guy like that in this clubhouse. A guy who keeps it real and doesn’t hold back. He was a good pitching coach before he became a manager
dantheman1997
Welp as a reds fan who put up with 4 years of god awful pitching under his management, I honestly feel sorry for Phillies fans if they actually hire him. Be prepared for that team era to jump from 4 to 20
HartnellDown
He was your pitching coach and manager?
driftcat28 2
Surprised it’s not Larry
