11:47pm: It’s “likely” the Angels will promote prior third base coach Mike Gallego to bench coach, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweets.
11:26pm: Newly minted Angels manager Joe Maddon is poaching a couple members from his previous staff in Chicago, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports. Cubs third base coach Brian Butterfield will take on the same position with the Angels, while strength and conditioning coach Tim Buss will serve in a quality assurance role with the Halos. Buss had been with the Cubs since 2001, Levine notes.
The 61-year-old Butterfield, a major league assistant since 1994, spent the previous two seasons overseeing third base for the Cubs’ offense and serving as the team’s infield coach. But the Cubs parted with Maddon in favor of David Ross after the season, paving the way for Butterfield to follow Maddon to Anaheim.
Butterfield’s the third major coaching hire for Maddon since the Angels chose him Oct. 16. Maddon previously brought in John Mallee to be the club’s assistant hitting coach and Mickey Callaway to work as its pitching coach.
Cubs fans, how is this guy?
Butterfield is one of the best around. Great hire.
Fact
He’s basically a walking encyclopedia of baseball, so it’s a good get
He is terrific as is Buss
Bussy and Butterfield are two of the best guys in baseball. Huge loss IMO for the Cubs
I’ll put it this way… as a lifelong cubs fan, I’m sad to see them both go
I agree. Both of them are great guys. The coaching staff was much better with both of them on there, but Theo has no clue what he’s doing, and so now it’s amateur hour. Theo will limp out of town in 2 years. Mark my words.
Correct me if I’m wrong wasn’t butterfield only with the cubs for 1 season? Hard to keep up with the cubs continuous turnover each of the last 4 off seasons and coaching changes.
He was with the cubs for 18 and 19
Great guy. Definitely knows his baseball stuff. He helped coach the infield a lot, and helped with defense quite a lot.
Outstanding coach!!
Both good hires. Buss out shines butter though.
That sucks. I liked butterfield.
He was awesome.
I think Buss is the bigger loss honestly.
I was kind of hoping for Eric Chavez to get the bench coach gig. It be nice to regain organizational continuity and letting a potential heir learn under Maddon would be a step in the right direction. That’s assuming Maddon plans to retire in the next 5 years
chavez never played for the angels. i wish players from ’02 championships are hired.
David Eckstein should be one of their coaches or Garrett anderson. He didn’t clinch their only world series 18 years ago
Why? It makes no sense to plug “random ex Angel” into an important coaching position simply because you liked the guy as a player. That’s not a criteria of qualification. Chavez has been in the org for years and has been a candidate for the position the last 2 years
Bengi Molina should be the next Angels manager after Madden
Next manager??? Geez let’s focus on THIS manager and those in charge putting together a team that can win.
It’s nice to know so many Cubs fan think so highly of him. As long as the coach isn’t a jerk, which I doubt he is, I’ll take the best coach for the job.
Well, you’ve got three of them haha
Great for Angles, not so good for Cubs!
I’m a Yankees Fan and when he left after Showalter got Fired was Sad cause Butterfield is one of the Best 3rd Base Coach and a really good infield Coach you’re Lucky to have him
Thanks Cubs fans for the honest assessments. I like these hires (with my limited knowledge) and increasingly am excited the Halos are pointed in the right direction.
