3:20pm: The Angels announced that both White and bench coach Josh Paul have been informed that they will not be returning for the 2020 season.
3:16pm: Maria Torres of the L.A. Times tweets that “numerous” pitchers had trouble adjusting to White’s ideas, including younger arms like Jaime Barria and Jose Suarez.
3:00pm: The Angels have fired pitching coach Doug White, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN (via Twitter). His dimissal comes one day after the team announced that Brad Ausmus would not return as manager in 2020. Like Ausmus, White’s tenure with the Angels will last just one season.
Prior to joining the Angels, White served as the bullpen coach for the Astros, though he only served one season in that role as well. He’d previously spent time as a minor league pitching coach and minor league pitching coordinator in the Houston system in addition to a half-decade’s worth of experience as a minor league coach with the Cardinals.
White was one of several members of the Astros’ 2018 field staff to be hired by other organizations, as other organizations looked to build out their coaching staffs with key members of one of the game’s most progressive and successful teams.
The match between White and the Halos seemingly didn’t bear fruit, though, as the team’s ERA, FIP, xFIP, walk rate and ground-ball rate all went in the wrong direction from 2018. Laying all of that blame on White isn’t fair, of course, as numerous external factors impacted the Angels’ results on the mound (injuries and, most notably, the death of Tyler Skaggs among them). But coaches must more than ever be on the same page with a manager, front office and analytics staff, and those relationships are often every bit as important as the team’s on-field results.
In the case of White, he was hired 10 days after Ausmus, so perhaps with the club simply believes that the incoming manager — widely speculated to be Joe Maddon — should have the opportunity to hand-pick his own pitching coach to ensure that the staff’s vision aligns as closely as possible.

Clean house.

Maddon
Psychguy
Wasn’t it Eppler who assembled this roster?
deweybelongsinthehall
They seem to believe Madden is now or never the manager and he will be allowed to assemble his own staff. Typical for a high profile change.
Psychguy
They let Ausmus and Co go after 1 year, but allowed Scoiscia to languish in mediocrity for more than 10 years?
AngelDiceClay
Asmus 1 year was worse than Scioscia’s last 10 combined
youngTank15
They weren’t much better in 2016. About 2 more wins.
murphydog
Mediocrity? His teams 3/4 of the time were in the playoffs. Mediocrity? World Series Champs. Given crap teams his last three years and they were always in the race till the final weeks.
bkbk
The word on the street is that Maddon is far from a done deal and this was about Ausmus. Look for Chavezs name to come up too, if only for neotiating purposes..
Philliesfan4life
I said that before, It could be between Maddon or maybe Chavez. But it’s so obvious , the day after Maddon becomes availble , Asumus is fired.
AngelDiceClay
I don’t what street you’re standing on but it’s Maddon. It’s pretty obvious when he’s available Asmus is gone
macstruts
The word on the street?
I’ve heard from someone not on the street before Ausmus was fired that Maddon coming to Anaheim was a strong possibility.
fits65
Asmus was like a deer in headlights when it came to on field decisions.
wordonthestreet
The word is that its Maddon
macstruts
It not Eppler’s fault that the roster he assembled wasn’t on the field.
The Angels did not have the Yankees depth. Eppler didn’t inherit a AAA player let alone a complete set of replacement players who could complete.
I don’t blame Eppler one bit. Quite the opposite. Once Corbin decided to sign with the Nationals I’m thrilled he didn’t make long term commitments to mediocre players, or to players that couldn’t come close to being worth their contract.
Cahill and Harvey are off the books,
DarkSide830
cant do anything with a rotation full of TJS patients, can you?
cookmeister 2
White admitted himself that there was miscommunication between he and the staff
DarkSide830
i guess there is a point there. if they only healthy guys (ie Barria, Sandoval, Suarez) struggled, its kinda moot what he did with Heaney, Pena, and Tropeano
cookmeister 2
exactly. Not having an impact on the older guys is whatever, but struggling to communicate with the younger and more impressionable guys is not good
macstruts
I think this makes the lat 24 out of the 25 pitches expected to be in the starting rotation that have gone on the DL. The only one who didn’t was Ricky Nolasco.
No starting pitcher threw 100 innings or started 20 games. That’s a hard way to win.
If they can’t get 75 starts out of Ohtani, Canning and Heaney, They are gong to have a hard time competing next year, and that’s with or without adding a front tier starter in free agency.

GM should be next
Melvin McMurf
then the owner
Woods Rider
Just cleaning house so Maddon can hire his guys.
Steven Chinwood
Funny how all of a sudden everyone thinks Maddon is the bomb.
sufferforsnakes
Too bad San Bernardino can’t fire the Angels High-A affiliate. They stink, too.
Vizionaire
troll!
lowtalker1
Product of epplers drafting. They cannot all be the storm.
sufferforsnakes
Viz, how can I be a troll when I speak the truth?
sufferforsnakes
The Storm — now that’s a team worth watching.
macstruts
Every high a affiliate stinks. I can’t even watch the local AAA team.
Caleb Clark
I think this clears the way for Joe Maddon. Also, do you think that Maddon can lure Gerrit Cole to the Angels?
keysox
Yap
Maddon – mgr Searage – pitching coach
Sign – Cole, Wahca and Quintana
Trade Adell for Bryant and Chatwood
If you need a closer Kimblow would come cheap
Take that Astros
texas_slim85
LMAO!!!
Bart
Please share with me the drugs you are enjoying.
GeoKaplan
I see you’re back with the “trade Adell for Bryant and Chatwood” nonsense.
Aside from being an incredibly good deal for the Cubs, there is no other reason for rational people to consider such a ridiculous idea. The Chatwood part is especially laughable, since the Cubs would be shedding the last season of that bust deal. For the next two seasons of $30M for Bryant, and the last season of Chatwood, the Angels would give up 6 years of control for Adell.
All you need to do is say it out loud and know exactly how bad an idea this is.
RoyalsFanAmongWolves
No way would the Angels trade Jo Adell!
trout27
These are the two most prominent positions on the staff so this comes as no surprise. There is nothing worse than a pitching coach the coach not being able to communicate with his staff. The bench coach is the manager’s sounding board and is usually a close friend or mentor.
Psychguy
They let Ausmus and Co. go after 1 year, but allowed Scoiscia to manage in mediocrity for more than 10 years?
bkbk
Dude was one of the most statistically succesful managers for like 15 years of all time minus the last 2-3 years. Use google.
bobby o
Skaggs f***up.
Vizionaire
your parents did!
macstruts
He did. Taking bootleg fentanyl and downing it with alcohol is a pretty good definition of “f”ng up.
I’m sorry he’s gone. It’s a terrible thing. But it is what it is.
Vizionaire
angels employ(s) pushed drugs to him. might have been an prescription but doubt it.
macstruts
I cried when I found out Skaggs died. I did the same for Adenhart, Bostock and Miley. I doubt the Angels pushed fentanyl and I know the Angels did not force him to get drunk while taking fentanyl.
The likelihood is the .drug came from south of the border and had the Angels forced it on him, he would have taken it more responsibly.
I hope they find out how he got it, but it didn’t come from anyone on the Angels medical staff.
Philliesfan4life
Bring in Joe Maddon , Cole and maybe MadBum plus Ray Serage for the pitching coach, unless joe wants chris bosio.
texas_slim85
LMAO!!!
darkangel
if the young guns are experiencing difficulty with the pitching coach then i’m sorry that coach may have unsuitable ideas. damnnn i hope he didn’t ruin those guys.
SoCalStuntman
Sure is good to hear there’s no turmoil within that organization!!
macstruts
There isn’t.
SoCalStuntman
Ya you continue to believe that buddy!!
macstruts
Because Trout extended because the clubhouse was in turmoil Ohtani came here because it was just awful here.
They can’t stay healthy. That does not equate to turmoil.
SoCalStuntman
Don’t give me the players can’t stay healthy BS! Every team goes through health issues. You just continue to believe in that organization, they’ll get there one year!
macstruts
It’s BS? When you don’t have a single starter throw 100 innings, you have problems.
When the only players out of your starting nine that don’t miss significant time is Calhoun and Puljos, you have problems.
The only expected starter with over 500 ABs was Calhoun.
How many teams does that happen to?
As hurt as the Yankees were, the Angels wish they were as heathy as the Yankees.
California Halo's
How many teams had there entire starting staff go on the DL? than several of the debt squad went on too? How many…. ONE TEAM THATS HOW MANY. The only one full of BS around here is YOU!
macstruts
His idea was to throw 0-2 meat balls. I won’t miss him a bit, the batters will, but I wont.
Murphi Kennedy
Right! What the hell kind of philosophy teaches you to throw 0- 2 pitches in the zone?!… Horrible pitching coach… Also what kind of philosophy has you giving up two out runs constantly every game every inning. This team was an Embarrassment to baseball this season, and I’m glad to see that people are paying for it.
steve fields
I went to high school with Joe Maddon in Hazleton, PA. Though I live in Orange County now, the amount of charitable work he’s done for that beleaguered town over the years is incredible. It doesn’t make a good manager but it makes him a terrific human being. Was hoping the Phillies would get him but it looks like the Angels all the way.
By the way, the only way the Phillies should fire Kapler is if Klentak goes with him.
jints1
Maddon is overrated. Super guy and good with the media. 8 of the 10 playoff managers are in their first managerial position. Why pay 5 or 6 million for a manager? If he didn’t win the last few years in Chicago, how is he going to win with the Angels?
wordonthestreet
If Maddon did not win with the Rays how was he to win with the Cubs? Oh wait he did!
nentwigs
Sure, the pitchers can’t adjust and the blame falls on the WHITE coach !!
cssolis1
I know this doesn’t relate but I’d love if the Angels not only got Gerrit Cole but what about Odorizzi
not alkaline
Ausmus should have been gone in one year from Detroit. But somebody leaked his dismissal and Avilla stubornly kept him on just to show up whoever let cat outta bag. I thought Angels were stupid for hiring Ausmus but they impressed me with realising their mistake and rectifying (damn near killed em) situation.
angels in Anaheim
Ray Searage as pitching coach since he coached Gerritt Cole.
wordonthestreet
And Cole blossomed after getting away from Searage. Hiring Searage would be a negative in pursuing Cole
