Dellin Betances is on his way to Toronto. The Yankees plan to activate the right-hander tomorrow, per James Wagner of the New York Times (via Twitter), and he should be available out of the pen for the series finale versus the Blue Jays.
Betances was a key piece of the Yankees’ bullpen from 2014 to 2018, appearing in no less than 66 games in each of the five seasons prior to 2019. He was diagnosed with a bone spur in his shoulder way back in April, an injury that at the time was expected to keep him out until June.
If Betances finds his stride in relative short order, he represents a significant weapon for Aaron Boone’s bullpen. The 31-year-old right-hander clocked 11.6 fWAR while appearing in 357 games in his Yankee career. Since establishing himself as a mainstay in 2014, Betances has a 2.22 ERA/2.26 FIP with 14.6 K/9 versus 3.9 BB/9.
In his latest rehab outing, Betances was hitting 92-94 mph on the gun, per Wagner. The Yankees hope to get him back up to speed over the final two weeks of the season.

I’m rooting for him to do well. It’ll be interesting what his next contract will be.

Looks like he’s not throwing upper 90’s. How effective will he be at 92-94?
redsoxfan2
Red Sox should sign him

Not hardly. They may have 50m coming off the books, but last thing they should do is sign an over 30yo reliever who just missed nearly and entire season with an arm injury who is going to want big bucks when they can find other options around to get under the highest cap for 3rd year in a row.
thegreatcerealfamine
John who makes up that 50m?
johnny53811
I assume Moreland,Núñez, Porcello and the possibility of Martinez opting out
jdgoat
I’m pretty sure that’s all basically cancelled out though with the raises Bogaerts, Sale, and Betts are getting.
floridapinstripes
So 28 mill.
50 if JD opts out.
20 more if they trade Mookie.

Hi Cereal. Slow getting back on this..
Other than the 1st three a poster mentioned, there is 17.5m from Sandoval’s deal coming off books, along with 6.5m from the Pierce deal.
Myself, I see Martinez coming back at least 1 more time on his player option(s) and there are other ways the Sox may go to cut if they choose. 1 way I’ve wanted to go for years is get rid of JBJ and he’s already making right at 10m, an overpay heading into his last y of team control, then “some” chance they move Betts, who make 20m in 2019.
Regardless.. Sandoval (17.5) Porcello (20) Pierce (6.5) and Moreland (6.5) alone were where the 50m came from, then nunez’s figures are all over the place.. somewhere between 3-5m additional.

Thanks John

@johnsilver Hey do you think the Sox are really THAT bad and THAT financially strapped that it’s time to let a gold glove Bradley and a elite player like Mookie walk? Mook is only 26 and should be coming into his prime years. I know he started off slow (for him) but he still a top 10 player in the game. Is it the feeling that he wants to leave? Do they feel he;s not worth a 8-10 year deal? I guess an argument can be made that the Harper and Machado range might be too risky but so is rebuilding now when you have Sale, Price, Bogaerts and Martinez signed to big bucks for the next 4 year. Do you feel confident they could trade Sale and Price without them returning back to top form? Would the Sox need to eat chunks of their salary?
To me, I just thought the they underachieved this year but still had enough to regroup if the Sox were mildly aggressive this winter.

Red Sox have a lot coming off the books all of Pandas contract except 5 million, Pearce, Moreland, Porcello, Nunez those total roughly 52 million. Xander and Sale have eaten up 23 million then you have to figure increases in Arb. The Red Sox will easily have a lower payroll then this year but the only way they will get under and reset the lux tax is if they trade Mookie or JDM opt out.
User 4245925809
On a total reset they would probably need to both move Betts and either non tender JBJ, or give him away for nothing. Agreed, but not as much thinking they will move Betts now as was before Dombrowski was fired since they now have to hire a GM, especially if it’s an outsider. Not to mention the team will be probably look to bring in some type of more stable veteran swing types this year than usual 4a’s that inhabit Pawtucket and were of no use in Boston all year off and on when called on.
Hoping for a partial build myself with Bradley out the door (a Dombrowski favorite) and avoiding the highest tax which has cost them 10 places on draft order 2y running come 2020. Getting under the tax period would be a pleasant surprise to me.

We’re getting the band back together!!!

If he is 90% of his old self, then the Yankees will have an unbeatable bullpen. They could shorten games to 5 innings through the whole playoffs.

At the end of the season, the Yankees are going to have some questions to answer…. they have a full 40 man roster and like 12 players on the injured list. Plus some guys who will be rule 5 eligible (26 players per Roster resource). They need to make some deals. Maybe a multi player deal for a very young prospect? Multi player deal for a starter?
TheTrotsky
Wow the first post from you that’s not virelently anti Yankees. Good job.
Melchez
I really don’t hate the Yankees. I just get tired of all the media gushing over them. Gardner is a great player and he needs to act like it. Banging the bat on the roof when things don’t go your way? Come on man, grow up. The rest… no complaints. They built this team on the international draft and some solid trades. Very few big name free agents. They don’t do a whole lot through the draft because they draft so late and lose picks from signing free agents.

Lol they don’t have any issues

Montgomery’s back tomorrow too!
