The Royals have claimed southpaw Randy Rosario off waivers from the Cubs, as per a team announcement. Rosario was designated for assignment by Chicago earlier this week. To create a 40-man roster spot, Kansas City recalled infielder Kelvin Gutierrez and placed him on the 60-day injured list.
Rosario posted a 5.91 ERA over 10 2/3 innings for the Cubs this season, a decided step back from the 3.66 ERA he delivered over 46 2/3 relief frames in his 2018 rookie season. Per ERA predictors, however, Rosario was fortunate (4.68 FIP, 4.60 xFIP, 4.74 SIERA) to escape at least an extra run’s worth of damage in 2018, as the grounder specialist only notched a 5.79 K/9.
This season saw Rosario miss more bats to the tune of an 8.4 K/9 in his brief time in Chicago, though his Triple-A numbers (3.11 ERA, 2.21 K/BB rate, 7.4 K/9) were almost an exact match for his career numbers over 413 minor league innings in the Cubs’ and Twins’ organizations. Rosario has shown some very good splits against left-handed batters, giving him a possible path to regular work as a specialist in Kansas City’s bullpen.

funny how Theo gets ridiculed for it yet his team is probably playoff bound.
chicagofan1978
Hold the phone there buddy, thats not a lock
ddevonb
What about the word “probably” implies a lock?
seth3120
Every Gm does it and most fans ridicule them for it not sure where the Theo part comes from unless your a Cubs fan and follow them so you hear more about him than other gms. Typically the move should make two teams stronger. Each saw a chance to upgrade their roster on some level. As for Cubs being playoff bound first of all comparing the Cubs situation to that of someone like the Royals is totally unfair when considering the resources. Second when you say probably do you mean better than 50-50? They are currently tied for the last wild card spot down four games to the Cardinals and a few other teams in reasonable distance of them. I don’t think I’d use the word probably personally
ddevonb
Of course it makes total sense right now for the Cubs to DFA him to add a player they need… and it makes total sense for the Royals to take a small chance on him.

I’m not saying Rosario is great or anything but he’s young and has had a lot of success in the minors. How did three teams worse than the Royals pass on him?
FunkMonkey1
From dfa to being in the top 3 pitchers on a club in less than a week is pretty good.

As a Royals fan your comment made me laugh…. because sadly it’s true.

By the way. That was quite the steal of the decade a couple of years ago. It might go down as one of the most lopsided trade in history. Soler for Wade Davis. Unbelievable. How many homeruns does Soler have this year? 44

Hey Cardinal boy- He was worthless when the Cubs traded him for a legit closer. At least hate with facts, dude ranch.
themed
You mean he was going injured?
ddevonb
Soler finally had his first good year and will soon be a free agent. Davis helped them get to the postseason. It was a good trade.
baseballfan9
Just to clarify…the Royals have Soler under team control until 2022.
ddevonb
Nope. He’s a FA after next season.

Not sure where the spreadsheet you linked to is from, but…..here’s a quote from an article by Jeff Flanagan on MLB.com, dated 6/21/19 (Flanagan covers the Royals for MLB.com.)
“By going to arbitration, the rest of Soler’s contract that he signed with the Cubs in 2012 would be voided. But the Royals still would have Soler under club control through 2021, his final year of arbitration. He could become a free agent after the ’21 season.”
In addition….both the Baseball Reference & Fangraph pages for Jorge Soler, show that he’s not eligible for free agency, until after the 2021 season.

Good trade huh? One of the most lopsided trades of all time.
ddevonb
Soler is a free agent after next season. KC has no shot is re-signing him.

Didn’t you already comment the same thing yesterday

“Rosario has shown some very good splits against left-handed batters, giving him a possible path to regular work as a specialist in Kansas City’s bullpen.”
That is an absolute ridiculous take..
Did this author forget that pitching rules change next season? There won’t be any such thing as a “specialist” anymore.
ddevonb
Of course there will be lefty specialists. They will just need to be used differently. In key situations where you have back to back lefties, if he facing a tough righty they can intentionally walk him. The same with a righty in between two lefties.
chicagofan1978
This guy is a 1 hit wonder, he will probably pull a quad in spring training. No pressure to be good in kc so he just swings for the fences. Not saying he doesn’t have power but that literally his game

Just as much pressure to be good in KC as there is in any MLB town. Don’t flatter yourself up there in Chicago. The cubs made a huge flop trade and in guessing will regret it for years to come. Almost as bad as the Lou Brock trade.
