According to an official team release, the Red Sox are tinkering with the 40-man roster to make room for a number of September call-ups. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com has the rundown on all the moves, which include the activation of left-hander David Price from the injured list. Newly-signed righty Jhoulys Chacin, catcher Juan Centeno, and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez have all been added to the 40-man roster. To make space for the above trio, injured pitchers Chris Sale and Steven Wright have been transferred to the 60-day injured list, while first baseman Joey Curletta was outrighted to Double-A.
Price last pitched for Boston in early August before a wrist issue forced him to the injured list—his second stint this season. As for much of his Red Sox tenure, it’s been a rocky year for Price, whose hefty contract looms in the face of good—not great—numbers.
Chacin, who yesterday inked a minor-league deal with Boston, will have a crack at the rotation as he seeks to redeem himself from a disappointing season in Milwaukee, which released him just a year removed from a stellar year. With the injury to Sale and many other options underperforming on the mound, Chacin represents a low-risk signee for a September audition.
Curletta has yet to make his big-league debut, and that milestone will have to wait a bit longer for the 25-year-old, a 2012 draftee of the Dodgers. He’ll remain with Double-A Portland though no longer on the Boston 40-man roster. He’s spent this season between the two levels of the upper minors, posting a combined .678 OPS with 14 home runs.
Centeno, 29, and Hernandez, 31, will each make their Red Sox debuts. Neither has appeared in the Major Leagues this season after inking minor-league contracts last winter. Centeno, who will offer depth beyond Christian Vazquez and Sandy Leon, is the owner of a career .227/.278/.331 batting line, playing parts of six Major League seasons with the Mets, Brewers, Twins, Astros, and Rangers. Hernandez made a name for himself with the Giants, where he played the previous three seasons. In 2018, he enjoyed a career year as he was given regular playing time, posting a .676 OPS to go with 15 home runs.

i dont follow the logic of having three catchers as opposed to a better hitting or versatile player.
RedSox4Life4ever
With Chavis out they have been utilizing Vasquez as the right hand hitting first baseman. Leon (the backup catcher) had caught the last 2 games, which included a 15 inning game.
DarkSide830
why not just call up a real 1B like Witte then?
User 4245925809
Chavis has been rehabbing at Pawtucket the last several games and seems to be fine, tho he did believe strain some muscle in his side last evening perhaps? he even hit a cpl homers in one of the games. No reason tho not to just activate him regardless.
FrostyPucker
Vasquez can DH or or play 1B more.
DarkSide830
what im saying is why not call up a real 1B/DH type (ie Witte) so Vasquez can play his natural position you can get a better bat off the bench?
RedSox4Life4ever
The Sox don’t have anyone better in the minor leagues for 1b than what they have now (except maybe Chavis but he’s rehabbing now). As for Witte he has no major league experience, plus he’s not even on the 40 man so the Sox probably don’t have the room on their roster to add him.

It’s not so much who’s on the major league Squad now as it is giving this catcher a shot to see what he has.
DarkSide830
right, of course, because you think they are packing it in for some reason, Einstein.
Jvall77
you are basically mathematically out. You can’t call someone dumb for that if that’s very likely lol?
So your saying it’s dumb because you shouldn’t give up when you basically have like a 3 % chance?
I’d say whoever thinks there still making the playoffs is sadly very wrong.
Their bringing in Chacin to the rotation lolol
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
They’re not packing it in. They won today. They’re five out.
You didn’t understand why they brought in a catcher. I’m explaining it to you to help you understand.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
What are you even talkin about? You haven’t read anything I’ve posted in the last 2 days under Red Sox articles.
They just signed that free agent pitcher from the Brewers 24 or so hours ago and I was pumped up for that.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
And then what’s with the Einstein? You’re the one that can’t figure out why they brought in a catcher. I’m trying to explain it to you, and do it without calling you some crazy derogatory name/comment.
People with no substance behind their argument resort to name-calling. Never fails.
I’d explain something to my very first girlfriend as a teenager, and when she couldn’t come back with a reasonable response with her own ideas she would say, “oh you’re just stupid.” So sad to see that type of conduct here from adults.

It is pretty simple, a third catching option is great when you’ve been playing Vazquez at 1B and he has played 2B and 3B in the past. A third catching option allows you to pinch hit or pinch run without the fear of running out of actual catchers. Leon needs either a pinch hitter or a pinch runner every game he plays in. As long as one or two catchers can play other positions, it is actually ideal.

Yay! Gorkys!!! As a Giants fan, I have dearly missed you.
jgoody62
Good, maybe we wont see JD in the outfield this month!
whyhayzee
If Gorkys was on the yankees he would have 27 home runs and no one would suspect a thing. Lame.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
If the Red Sox lose to the angels today they’ll be 6 out Monday morning.
I said I would be done if we’re 6 out of the wild card now. If they win, they’ll be five games out. Can’t believe they lost last night… it would have been nice to be 4 out Monday morning, keeping hope barely alive.
Essentially a must-win today. 5 out is still a long way, but 6 out I’m done.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Well they won today and they’re five out of the wild card. I guess I keep paying attention for a few days. Time’s running out. Twins then Yankees.., yikes.
whyhayzee
If Joey Curletta got called up by the yankees he would hit 16 home runs in a week and no one would suspect a thing. Lame.
DarkSide830
not really, but i do think i suspect something about which team you may not be a big fan of.
whyhayzee
The yankees rotation has a worse ERA than the 1962 Mets and they have 90 wins? Oh really. They’ve got player after player hitting more home runs by far than they’ve ever hit before. Oh really.
If the Red Sox had Devers, Benentendi and Betts (or any other key players) out for an extended period along with a bunch of other players injured periodically and their fill-ins were hitting home runs all over the yard, yankee fans would absolutely FREAK and then their heads would all explode.

Many teams are bringing in a third catcher now just because they can,
It guards against injuries, and gives the players who have caught additional rest in the last month of the season.
The manager can pinch hit for the catcher, who is quite often the team’s worst hitter, without fear of an injury to the backup catcher.
In the old days before 13 pitcher staffs each team generally had three catchers.
There are other reasons to bring up specific catchers such as discussed, but this seems to be the main one for most teams.

Is this the season where they limited the number of September call ups allowed? I know they have been talking about doing so. Previously, you could expand your MLB roster up to 40 in September but I think they limited it to 28-30 for this year? If this is the case, this is why we are not seeing Dalbec, Ockimey, Chatham, Lin and other promising minor league players. Service time with Dalbec could be an issue but it shouldn’t impact the others so I’m guessing there are roster restrictions this year. Does anyone know for sure?
