The Rangers have selected the contract of catcher Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Nashville, the team announced (Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News was first to report the move). They transferred slugger Joey Gallo to the 60-day injured list to create 40-man roster room for Federowicz. Gallo, on the IL since July 24 with a fractured right hamate bone, might be done for the season.
The 32-year-old Federowicz joined the Rangers in a June trade with the Indians. He then totaled 79 plate appearances and posted a subpar .169/.224/.366 line with four home runs in Texas before the team booted him from its 40-man roster on the last day of July. Federowicz wasn’t any better as a member of the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate, with whom he batted .140/.190/.193 and hit a single homer in 63 attempts, but the well-traveled veteran did put up a playable line with the Indians’ top minor league club prior to the trade (.278/.353/.411, two HRs in 103 PA).

Does anybody have any future maximum high end expectations for the best offensive year of Joey Gallo’s career if he stays healthy moving forward?
Fire Jon Daniels
Yup 55 home runs 250 strikeouts.

Is Chris Davis a ballpark comparison? Big lefty with big HR/K profile?
Gallo is almost surely the more athletic of the two defensively, but offensively do they profile similarly?
If so, who wins up better in the end?

That’s funny. I was just commenting about Chris Davis on another MLBTR post earlier tonight. Of you are asking about a best year basis I think Gallo couldn’t complain about having Chris Davis #’s. If it is on a career basis, I think Rangers fans would be very disappointed to see Gallo fall off like Davis did. That being said, injuries combined with Gallo’s atrocious strikeout numbers could end up making Gallo’s career so short that Rangers fans would gladly trade him for the few super productive years Chris Davis had. I’ve read that Gallo’s k’s are more of a result of him being the most “Three True Outcomes” player in baseball. I guess that means he is expected to get more walks and a higher OBP than Davis? Maybe that could be a good thing. I don’t know much about how to predict three true outcome players but it could mean he turns into a annual healthy version of Aaron Judge’s rookie season. If his walks and OBP go up then that could take some of the pain away from the strikeouts and mediocre batting average. That power is serious. Gallo is a fun player to watch at the very least. I hope he gets healthy and is in next years home run derby.

cant imagine he ever hits for a higher AVG then this year.

Something tells me the Rangers make a splash in free agency this year and bring in both Rendon and Cole.
When Gallo is healthy he really makes this lineup scary. The West might be much more wide open next year with the extra wear and tear of championship level baseball already catching up on the Astros health. This bouncy ball could elevate Gallo to a 60 plus homerun threat and if that is complimented by some other pieces, then the playoff drought is over.

LMAO!

just like the Phillies got both Machado and Harper…

I know the Rangers are opening a new ballpark and all this year and I’m sure they will want to make a splash, but… Do you really see the Texas Rangers outbidding every single team in MLB for both of the top free agent contracts this off season? I mean you are possibly talking about over $400 million. That number is actually a conservative guess as to what top $ teams like the Yanks would pay. For Texas to outbid teams with more $ so the player can sign with team that has a much smaller chance of making the playoffs is going to drive the number even higher. I think Texas could land Rendon if they open their checkbook larger than it has been since the A-Rod days. I’m sure they would love to have Cole but that is a pipe dream. Gerrit Cole will not sign with Texas this off season and there is even a less likely chance of both Cole and Rendon.

The Diamondbacks proved a big contract for a pitcher can still be moved, and bring back value. Cole will sign with whoever offers the most money and that could easily be the Rangers. Rendon, similarly has skills that help you win and would sign for a contract that could be moved if it doesn’t work.
The Rangers could follow the Marlins protocol and make a big run, then tear it down right after the parade. Heck, sign Lester and Hamels too and really go for the gusto.

Well there’s always Rick Porcello to fall back on if the Rangers miss out on Cole.
