Not trading Bumgarner is looking just as bad for SF as not trading Harper last year did for WAS.
amk3510
And Will Smith. But hey in contention and Bochys last year right?
Jesse Stirling
There’s a pretty good chance both Bumgarner & Smith return to SF for 2020 & beyond.
So there were some tertiary benefits to not trading this pair of lefty hurlers. And even though the Giants didn’t make the playoffs this year, the team was sniffing around contention for a bit. Plus, ticket sales; these are two very popular, All Star players.
It’s not all about collecting the best prospects, like they were Pokeman cards or something. It’s about winning games on an MLB level and winning championships. Seems like this upcoming group of younger baseball fans has lost sight of that fact, and some would rather their team have the best rated farm system in MLB, rather than most wins.
amk3510
And thats why they have become what they are now. They got a solid piece in Dubon for Pomeranz. Imagine if they actually sold off their 2 biggest assets. Could have moved the rebuild needle but instead they got caught up in the delousion they could win. Yes its about winning titles but any logical baseball fan could see their run was a flash in the pan. Now they have no tradable pieces to sell off.
SFGiants74
Huh? Zaidi has no qualms about turning over the roster. They had about 55 different players on the 25 man roster this season. If anybody of significance had been offered for Bumgarner, or Smith, he probably would have pulled the trigger. The organization has made huge strides this season. I doubt not trading Bumgarner and Smith will hurt them in the long run.

“There’s a pretty good chance both Bumgarner & Smith return to SF for 2020 & beyond.”
If that’s the case then they definitely should have traded them. They could have gotten a haul of prospects and then brought them back as free agents in the offseason. Would you rather have Bumgarner, Smith and prospects or just Bumgarner and Smith?
“It’s about winning games on an MLB level and winning championships.”
Yes and by not trading Bumgarner and Smith they’ve hurt their chances of doing those things.
Xavier Blaine
Yes, a padres fan should know a lot about winning the Best Farm System award every year and still finishing below .500
Show Me Your Tatis
I love how you have to resort to that because you get your as handed to you when you try to actually discuss the issue in detail.
SFGiants74
You are assuming they were offered anyone of significance.
Show Me Your Tatis
@Vince of course they were. This is Madison freaking Bumgarner we are talking about.
Jean Matrac
I love how some fans want to have it both ways. The consensus on these posts, in the weeks leading up to the deadline, was that Giant’s fans were going to be sorely disappointed in the return for Bumgarner. Even Steve Adams said that in one of the chats. Now all of a sudden the Giants turned down some sort of haul in the misguided belief they could contend. That’s absurd.
Zaidi is not that dumb to turn down a prospect haul for either Bum or Smith. Had one been offered they would be on other teams. It’s apparent that what Zaidi was offered was insufficient to make moving them worth doing it.
Show Me Your Tatis
Giants fans would be disappointed because Bumgarner is a franchise icon and they only wanted to move him if they were getting back a top 10 overall prospect. That wasn’t going to happen, but obviously teams would offer something decent. Like a top 100 and another interesting name or two.
Literally anything that was worth more than the comp pick from the QO would have been sufficient to make moving them worth it.
SFGiants74
‘Literally anything’? The Giants don’t need AAA fillers. The waiver wire is full of them. They also don’t need journeymen.
Pickle_Britches
They need to get rid of belt. This nonsense of him being un lucky hitter is horse scat. He’s been declining over the last 3 years. Time to carry that light stick to another dug out and let the reinforcements take over
Show Me Your Tatis
I said “literally anything that was worth more than the comp pick from the QO” dingus. And I guarantee they could have gotten that.
its_happening
On a side note, SD would be a perfect organization for Dombrowski to turn around.
bigjonliljon
I’m not so sure on that. His rep is signing big dollar free agents and trading prospects. Padres do have tons of prospects but Dom would trade them all for veterans and still have losing team. I’d say just say no
Melchez
Dombrowski doesnt make losing teams. The three franchises he took over went to the world series. The teams were in rough shape later, but who cares. They made it.
Balk
Dude, here we go again with this nonsense. You don’t treat your players especially one that has helped you win 3 rings like a bag of potatoes. The front office I’m sure knows a lot more then you on how they plan to address Bum and Smith next year. Bum will be a Giant next year and with his no trade clause it was probably on the impossible side to move him. Especially if the offer was junk! Keep him and extend him. I’m sure that’s the plan
Show Me Your Tatis
How is allowing Bumgarner to finish out the season pitching for an actual contender and add to his postseason legend and to be ineligible to receive a QO “treating him like a bag of potatoes?” That’s the best case scenario for him!
“Bum will be a Giant next year…”
If that is the case they definitely should have traded him. Would you rather have Bumgarner and prospects or just Bumgarner?
“… and with his no trade clause it was probably on the impossible side to move him.”
He would have accepted a trade if one was agreed upon, especially because of the reasons I mentioned (pitch in the postseason, remove his QO eligibility). Like, don’t think for even a second that the Giants are gonna just not QO him as a showing of goodwill or whatever. Especially if they had tried to trade him and he vetoed it.
“Keep him and extend him. I’m sure that’s the plan”
That was the Nats’ plan with Bryce Harper last year. How’d that turn out?
Balk
There you go again, saying “he would’ve accepted a trade deal if presented with one”.
Cmon dude, you must not follow the Giants, he had multiple interviews stating he doesn’t care about any of that, he loves where he’s at now. On the flip side, to give you comfort, if Bum doesn’t sign with the Giants next year and rejects a qualifying offer, then I’ll be pissed right along with ya.
Show Me Your Tatis
Link?
Oh and Bum will 100% reject a QO if (when) it comes to that.
SFGiants74
What makes you an expert on MadBum’s 2020 destination?
Show Me Your Tatis
Never said I was. Thanks tho!
Balk
Damn, you’re just ignorant huh? If you don’t remember him saying to reporters I doesn’t give a sh*# about trade talks and that his mind is staying right where he’s at but want to spew bull crap then you are misinformed. Bum has stated in multiple interviews that he’s spent his whole career with the Giants and would love to stay, he has nothing else to prove. Get out of here with your nonsense.
Balk
Giants only have about 117 million on the books for 2020, could be a big splash coming to the bay in the off season. Cole could be one big addition, (Crawford being his brother in law) and resigning Bum, pretty good looking starting rotation if it comes to fruition.
Show Me Your Tatis
1. I think you are misinterpreting what he meant by “I don’t give a s**t about trade talks.”
2. Why do you keep ignoring the fact that trading Bumgarner wouldn’t have meant the Giants couldn’t sign him? It happens with at least one guy every year. If the Giants have money and aren’t afraid to spend it on the guy and he wants to come back it should be easy for them.
Melchez
“I would find it hard to believe that Dombrowski or especially Cora would be fired just a year after winning a World Series.”
And a little over an hour later…DD is canned.
bigjonliljon
You beat me to it!!! Lol
lowtalker1
Portland didn’t even want a triple a team. They choice soccer. There aint no teams going to the hipster land. Tampa goes to Montreal and as go to Nevada case closed
its_happening
Case closed? Montreal is the worst baseball market in the history of Major League Baseball. They make Tampa look like the Yankees. Plus the Canadian Dollar being worth 75 cents to the dollar makes it an enormous headache.
GB85
Oh, are you doing the accounting work for MLB now? The park’s location in St. Pete’s is a disaster and stadium is outdated. Montreal deserves a chance to see if baseball is viable again there and MLB obviously agrees.
bigjonliljon
As someone who’s been the Trop many times…. it’s doggie doo doo of a stadium. And the attendance….. if it’s ever more than a third full, it’s fans of the visiting team. Especially when the Red Sox, Yankees, or Blue jays come to town
its_happening
GB85 – Montreal had their chance and blew it. Badly. They drew less than what Tampa draws now. Montreal’s location wasn’t the greatest and yet they have a subway running under the stadium. They’ll have a hard time funding a new stadium and finding a location big enough with that congested city. If you had any knowledge of the city, the province, and the history of Montreal baseball you’d never consider a major league team there.
DarkSide830
Id be curious about the idea of moving, say, Miami to Vancouver, Tampa to Miami, (as so that the better of the two organizations remains within its own state, gains a larger audience, and can stop being bothered by their stadium, as deserved) and Oakland to Las Vegas. Obviously Montreal having a stadium already helps their case, but Vancouver better connects fans in Western Canada with the game then two teams in Ontario and Quebec do.
jdgoat
That stupid new ballpark in Miami ruins what I think should happen. Move Tampa actually to Tampa and Miami up to Montreal. But there’s no way the city of Miami would let that happen after giving Loria that stadium.
its_happening
Move Miami to Montreal so they can draw less fans in a hazardous ballpark?
keysox
Nope not going to happen.
Like to see A’s in Nashville. Tampa in Tampa – need new owner and stadium.
gilgunderson
My baseball fandom began in the late 70s/early 80s, when speed was a prominent part of the game. While I enjoyed watching that aspect of the game, the problem was most of the base-stealing wizards of the day were simply not very good hitters. Rickey Henderson and Tim Raines were both elite hitters and base stealers, but Vince Coleman? No.
Melchez
Mexico city and Dominican Republic should get teams. Send the Ray’s and marlins. Florida wont support a major league team.
Jean Matrac
Both of those are bad ideas. The travel would be bad for east coast teams to Mexico City, and likewise for west coast teams traveling to the DR. On top of that, isn’t Denver bad enough for how the elevation affects the game? Mexico City is more than 2,100′ higher in elevation than Denver. It would no longer be a game that made any sense at that elevation. Sorry, but baseball in Denver is bad enough.
