4:48pm: Per Rogers, Bryant will undergo an MRI tomorrow to determine the severity of the sprain.
3:12pm: In a worrisome scene at Wrigley Field today, Cubs star Kris Bryant was helped off the field after suffering an apparent ankle injury that occurred when he slipped on first base trying to beat out a ground ball. Cubs fans can breathe a sigh of relief, with Jesse Rogers of ESPN reporting that initial X-rays did not reveal any broken bones, as Bryant has been diagnosed with a sprained right ankle.
The injury looked awfully similar to the one suffered by Bryce Harper in 2017 when he hyperextended his knee after slipping on the first base bag. However, it looks as if Bryant has escaped the worst-case scenario—though a sprained ankle certainly isn’t a favorable outcome, either. Similar to Harper’s injury, the base was we because of light rainfall in Chicago.
The situation was made more nerve-wracking in light of Bryant’s nagging troubles with knee soreness throughout the season. He was able to put very little weight on the right leg as he was helped off the field, replaced by Ian Happ.
As the Cubs see their playoff chances diminish by the day, another injured star would only be a fitting nail in the coffin, given what has happened to Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo in recent weeks. The Cubs entered the day three games behind the Brewers, who are in line for a Wild Card berth. With only seven games to play (including Sunday) the margin for error is only shrinking in Chicago.

They were a third place team in May. Can’t wait for the excuses.
Cmurphy
While there are no reasonable excuses, there are reasons. Trading LaStella to dump salary while signing Descalso was stupid. Not spending for pitching in the off season because they had no money was stupid. They make so much and stand to make so much more with the new cable channel. The only bright spot is that Darvish found his way, though wish he would have in the first half. Signing Hamels after a three month improvement for $20M was not smart. A lot of bad luck injury-wise but they weren’t doing well before any of the injuries. The team didn’t and doesn’t work together. Blame the players, the manager, blame Theo, blame the front office. Everyone has a piece of the blame.
The BS of what Bryant said is a joke. If St. Louis fans can’t recognize the manner of when and where it was said, I feel sorry of them.
Yankeepride88
Hindsight is 20/20. You know who was right this whole time? PECOTA. Can’t use injuries as an excuse when teams like the Astros, Yankees, and Indians have all had a massive amount of injuries and have 90+ wins.
gregstruth89
Typical cubs fan bs
StandUpGuy
I have to agree with you. No team has suffered more injuries than the Yanks and they were the 2nd MLB team to clinch. The real problem is Epstein and the was he is accustomed to spending money. He did it in Boston and he did it in the NorthSide. The game has changed and considering how young he is it is surprising he hasn’t changed with it. He kinda screwed over Boston with the terrible $300+ mill worth of contracts handed out to Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. When those seemed like almost immediate fails he hightailed it out to Chicago. I think I remember that move was very controversial because he was still under contract with Boston at the time and didn’t initially ask for permission to do so. I think Boston just realized they didn’t want a GM that didn’t want to be there and let him go. The real problem has less to do with injuries or the manager and more to do with payroll constraints. People want to blame that on owners but it is far more Epstein’s fault. He knew the budget before he made moves. He spent well over $300 million on Yu Darvish and Jason Heyward combined. I didn’t know much about Darviah but I figured it was a bad deal for the Cubs. I knew for a fact that paying over $180 million for Heyward was beyond idiotic. He really only had 2 great years in his career and one if them was his rookie season. Very talented and well coached but his well documented back injury that he acquired in high school is the reason he could never consistently reach his superstar status. Picking up Hamels option was not smart and Lester is obviously not performing like he once did. That being said, the real reason the Cubs aren’t contending is that they paid Heyward and Darvish like superstars and neither has even come close to being a regular star. Imagine what the Cubbies could have done with that $ in the bank. That falls on Epstein. He is good at buying a quick championship for a rich team that has money to spend. He is not good a sustaining that. I know Boston won more Championships after he left but that was not because of him. If he had the courage and belief that he could get himself out of that mess or he would have stayed. It’s kind of like a deal with the devil. He will get you at least one if you are rich and have the $ to send right then and there but he will have to make you pay sub par players for a very long time afterwards. For Boston with an 85 year drought and Chicago with a 108 year drought it seems worth it. He won’t help you anymore though. He probably has his eyes set on a team like the Nationals, Dodgers or Yankees in the future. He needs the cash to buy one and then wants to walk away to the next team with cash to spend so he isn’t GM anymore once the worst part of the huge contracts he signed come into effect.

Hopefully Kris Bryant is ok and nothing serious so his trade value won’t be significantly impacted. Of the core position players (Baez, Bryant, Contreras, Rizzo and I’ll include Schwarber). Bryant is the least likely to sign an extension. This off season is the time to move him. It’s painful for fans to hear that but it’s the business. Bryant will likely provide a solid return. Some possible destinations are Tampa, Arizona, Texas, Atlanta, NY Mets and Washington

The padres would be fools to trade for him. They have no need. 3B and SS filled for a long time. Could stick him in the OF but they have plenty of options there already. Though they have a history of adding players when they already have good players at the position so wouldn’t be surprised
cubsfanbudman1908
He would pencil in as the starting LF and occasional 1B on the Padres. If the Pad’s think they can make a run next year, it makes perfect sense.

Would love to unload Wil Myers, Manny Margo & Austin Hedges for him.. (& I’d pray defensive gem Hedges doesnt turn into another Ozzie Smith calibre trade)

Bryant is either be traded to the Mets or the Braves!

I think cubs fans need to calm down…really was a hard luck season…at the end of the year having Báez out means a lot…and if you look at the year not having Zobrist as lead off killed you…Lester is crashing down to earth and Kimbrel didn’t come through…you have money coming off the books and talent to trade…if you can find a leadoff, SP and some RP (which maybe Kimbrel is better with a spring training) and you will be fine…seems like a lot but you have money to spend and assets to trade…plus the controversy with Russell and the owners

Surprising how hard the Cubs have fallen, 6 straight losses! Cards are in cruise control mode against them. Great to see Fowler heating up!!

4 straight one run games is hardly cruise control.

Bryant is horribly overrated and he will not re-sign with the Cubs. I do hope he is ok so his trade return will be better. It’s time for Epstein to RELOAD, not rebuild and trading Bryant is a must.
Priggs89
If being the best player on the team is overrated, yes, he is.

So easy to kick the Cubs when they’re down but all I’m going to say is this is why the games are played on the field. You can throw out all these advanced statistics but the game is still played on the field by humans not spit out by a computer like you stat geeks think it is. Lastly, looks like the Brewers got their September pixie dust back again.
brewcrew08
Is it really pixie dust if they do it two years in a row? Starting to look like a trend to me. Cubs fold in September and the Brewers step up.
rayrayner
Slight correction. The Cubs folded in October last year.
brewcrew08
Cubs blew a 5 game lead in September to lose the division last year though.
rayrayner
That’s true and they lost a couple of series to the Brewers, but I wouldn’t consider a 16-12 record last September blowing it.
Losing a 5 game lead to the Brewers this September was definitely blowing it.
gregstruth89
Just like last year. What’s the excuse this year. The sharks can smell the blood in the water. Cubs $uck!! All that money wasted.

Not the first Cub backer to throw out that term. Nice to have that dust when you need it though.

I’m a Brewers fan through and through. The pixie dust comment is directed to a certain troll who can’t accept the fact that teams get hot in September without calling it pixie dust
Priggs89
I don’t get what any of this has to do with advanced statistics..?

All the stat geeks predicted the Brewers were a sub .500 team and the Cubs were going to run away with the division. Nobody gave the Brewers a chance.
themed
How many people predicted the Cardinals to beat the cubs not only in the standings but also head to head before this season started? Not many. And I was being told what an idiot moron I was for even thinking that could happen. It was so very clear to see. Do I want the Cardinals to do well in the playoffs. Of course I do. But I’ve already seen them win 5 World Series and at least 10 National League Championships and I’ve lost count how many Division Championships. So many. So no matter what happens from here on out I’m satisfied. Anything else now is like frosting on the cake.

This my friends is DeWitt and Mozeliak’s poster child of a fan. “No matter what happens…I’m satisfied.” That’s EXACTLY what the Cards brass wants. They will put a product on the field that is just good enough to compete and make the fans graze to Busch at 3M plus. Their desire is never to win a WS. It’s simply to compete in a weak division and hope to get lucky in the playoffs.
themed
Yeah what are the cub fan expectations?
kroeg49
Playing the Pirates gave Cub fans high hopes. They forgot that the Brewers got to play them this week.
ChiSoxCity
cubs fans are derps. They forget what they ate for lunch yesterday, but they remember their first cubs onesie for christmas. The cubs team we all saw the first few months of the season is the same club we see now. Aside from a healthy Baez and Contreras, there’s nothing special about this roster. They look awful against elite teams. They look awful against bad teams. They look great against teams that are tanking and have nothing to play for (Pirates).
ChiSoxCity
Baby Bears are headed for a rebuild. They’re about to be historically bad. Main because Theo Epstein has no clue how to run a winning ball club.
rayrayner
A Sox-like rebuild is not happening this winter and you know that. Enjoy your day of gloating.
ChiSoxCity
You should really learn how to read for context. Of course Epstein will delay any rebuild. The Ricketts family wouldn’t let him do it anyway. They know the cubs don’t need to be good to sell tickets. So enjoy the next two years of Ground Hog day with Kimbrel and Company. The White Sox will take it from here kid.
rayrayner
Context? You just spew bile with your Cub hatred. And you contradicted yourself a couple of times in this thread alone.
Good luck to the White Sox, btw. I hope they make strides next year. The AL Central is perfect for that.
Cmurphy
The Cubs break records with ticket sales every year no matter how good or bad they are, been that way long. before Ricketts came along. Meanwhile, on the South side, they rarely sell out unless they’re playing the Cubs. And that includes 2005.
I go to Guaranteed Rate Field a few times a year to catch the Ms or the Yankees and so many empty seats. I’m a Chicago fan, hope the rebuild comes through with flying colors but they need to find a way to fill the seats.

Jorge Soler, his 45 HRs and 111 RBI says hi too.

One of the most one sided lopsided trades of all time that somehow goes under the radar. The Soler for Wade Davis deal.
ChiSoxCity
Yep. Mention that to a cubs fan, and their response is “Soler who”? Any knowledgeable, engaged fanbase would be alarmed at the amount of talent a team like the cubs have so recklessly given away recently, with next to nothing to show for it. Theo Epstein should be the one fired, not Maddon. Epstein makes worse decisions than Ken Williams did when he was a GM (should have been fired a decade ago).
ChiSoxCity
Gleyber Torres, with his 38 HRs and 90 RBIs say hello too.
youngTank15
When was the last time the white Sox got to the playoffs? Not a cubs fan but a white Sox fan shouldn’t be saying anything until the white Sox make the playoffs.
ChiSoxCity
White Sox fans catch hell from cubs fans online, and it’s always personal and never about baseball. Well, it’s payback time. It’s obvious you don’t understand or care how rude and ignorant cubs fans are, so just stay out of it and mind your own business.
BeeVeeTee
The only reason Epstein spent that money on Darvish was to get the Japanese market when the Cubs start their new tv deal next season. If you guys don’t understand it then start realizing it’s just about that tv money for now on!
K R Stemen
So Cubbies…..How is that giant $200++ million dollar payroll working out for you now????
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Theo is overrated. Won in Boston and Chicago with teams comprised of all-stars, and not all of whom were acquired by him. Never understood the word “genius being applied to Maddon. He effs up a lot trying to play the smartest-guy-in-the-room role. Both should be replaced right now.
Going forward I love the Cubs infield and catching. Any MLB team would be hard pressed to trot out the equivalent of Rizzo, Hoerner, Baez, Bryant and Contreras.
Not in love with the outfield. Cubs are stuck with Heyward, but if he continues to play Gold Glove like defense in RF and can hit .260 with 15-20 HR and double-digit SBs, one could do far worse.. Trade Schwarber and Almora. Find a platoon partner for Happ in LF and sign or trade for someone to play CF (Marte, Inciarte, Nimmo?).
I can live with another year of Lester, Quintana, Darvish and Hendrick as the top four starting pitchers. Hamels, if he doesn’t retire, will probably head back home to the pitching starved Phillies to finish his career.
The bullpen? I like Kimbrel, Cishek and Strop. I don’t think Kimbrel is fully healthy (Something Theo should have checked out before he gave him big cheese.) so I expect him to be his old self, at least for one more year.
The bench is pretty good with the versatile Bote, Russell (If he isn’t traded.), Caratini. and whover they get to platoon with Happ (I still like his potential.) in LF.
Fearless Prediction Dept.:
With a new GM and new manager, Cubs bounce back big time in 2020 and win the NL Central easily.
Priggs89
So you basically think they shouldn’t do anything to the roster.
mistry gm
Your gold glove Heyward made one less error than Schwarber.
CFAP
You still eat brontosaurus burgers too? Errors in baseball don’t begin to tell the entire story of a defender in today’s game.

READIng the comments was cathartic.
No one mentioned making wet bases safer.
KB has one more year or arb control? Gotta keep him for one more throw of the dice. KB is ++baserunner, versatile defensively, will SLG & OBP…still strikes out too much.
Unless you get an established starter (Snell; DET Guys; DeGrom/Syndergaard) you don’t trade him.
The big call is gonna be what Castellanos does. I think 4/$80m – 5/$110m will be the ask. His defense wasn’t “terrible”. He could give .300/25HR/40 doubles.
Schwarber/Heyward/Castellanos LF-RF…keep Happ as 4th…tender/trade Almora for AA arms. Money comes from new TV contract
