The Giants have claimed infielder Corban Joseph off waivers from the Athletics, per a club announcement. Righty Tanner Anderson was outrighted after clearing waivers, the Oakland organization also announced.
It’s yet another addition for the insatiable Giants, who placed Pablo Sandoval on the 60-day injured list to clear roster space. The 30-year-old Joseph becomes the latest player to catch the eye of president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Just what kind of opportunity he’ll have late this season remains to be seen.
Joseph debuted way back in 2013 but has appeared in only 27 lifetime MLB contests. He struggled this year with a brief chance in Oakland, but spent most of the season at Triple-A. In 425 plate appearances in the Pacific Coast League, he slashed a robust .371/.421/.585 with 13 long balls. The left-handed-hitting Joseph is primarily a second baseman; he could see some time there along with the righty swinging Mauricio Dubon.

I know I’m going to get hate for this, but I love this sign and I believe CJ can be a very valuable MLB player if given the chance to do so.
Laibax
If you like soft hit ground balls to the right side then you got your guy
DarkSide830
why?
Gumby82
Because they can
champion1701
That’s not a good reason to do something.

Not impressed with Corban, he was meh as an A. Great for depth at Sacramento but imo he doesn’t have a place on a 25 man roster.
mattwild1
hopefully the new yastrzemski/dickerson. in farhan we trust

i dont thinl Dickerson was a total lottery pick given his AAA track record. that being said, credit for picking him up.
Pickle_Britches
And corbans track record for AAA is just as good as Dickerson. Lol
Who knows maybe he gets some reg playing time he could end being a good player. Especially for 2B. He won’t have to do much to be better than Paniks weak stick was.
missjill2u
But he WILL (or should) have to outplay Solano. They are the same age
statman
“Insatiable” ??? That’s an odd word to describe the Giants, Todd, don’t you think?
missjill2u
Once again we are talking about Dubon playing 2nd with this 30-year-old backing him up. (primarily minor league player?) No mention of 31-year-old Solano at all. Solano has proven himself this year at The Majors level batting .336 in 192 AB with an OPS of .831. But we are talking about a minor league player as Dubon’s back up? Am I high or is this nuts? We add Gennett’s (and the like) as starters and when they tank we are talking about Solano but then he’s forgotten again. Isn’t he one of our most consistent hitters? Why don’t we start Dubon at SS and Solano at 2nd? Yes, I know they are both Righties. The post says at the major league level Joseph has struggled in his (only) 27 appearance?
daonlyjmo37
I know right it’s like MLBTR doesn’t even know Solano exists
wiggysf
Plus, the giants said their plan for him is to use him mostly at 3rd to back up longi.

I read that and hope it’s the case. This article says, ‘the left-handed-hitting Joseph is primarily a second baseman; he could see some playing time there along with the righty swinging Mauricio Dubon’
missjill2u
Zero mention of Solano in this article.
Jean Matrac
This guy is not a potential replacement for Solano. he’s a potential replacement for Sandoval.
And why does Solano need to be mentioned? Most teams will carry 2 utility guys behind their starters. Solano is having a career season, but it’s also way beyond what he’s ever done in his career. This season is 22% better than his next best season. and 42% better than his last season of any reasonable sample size. At 31 only a fool would assume that he will repeat what he did this season. You hope he does, but you need contingencies if he reverts. There’s no reason to go all in on a guy based on 1 season.
What Zaidi is doing is looking at as many possibilities as he can to help the club, and giving the Giants options. Joseph may not be the answer, but he’s worth looking at.

This article is about Jones not a future player because Jones and Solano are the same age. There is no mention of Pablo who didn’t fill in as SS and rarely at 2nd. Solano has proven himself this season and should have had a lot more playing time. Jones has not proven himself in the majors. If we are talking the future it would be players like Dubon. This season? Solano over Gennett and the earlier version of Panik. If we are talking about next season a proven Solano in the majors is still better than Jones. Solano did well in the minors. Wasn’t Solano also (slightly) better w the Giants AAA team than Jones? Batting average wise. You present your case well and respectfully and I appreciate that! Not always the case here
Gobbysteiner
Why are they claiming these 30 year olds at all. Just bring green up. He can’t be any worse than Joseph but he’s 6 years younger. Why not just let him go at third?
peyton
I read that as “the insufferable Giants’ at first
