Joel Sherman of the New York Post had an interesting profile today of a Yankees pitching staff at a crossroads (link). After losing Domingo German and Dellin Betances to suspension and injury, respectively, over the past several days, the AL East-champion Bombers find themselves with a pitching picture very much in flux. “I don’t look at it as frustrating,” pitching coach Larry Rothschild told Sherman. “I look at it as a problem to solve. We have to figure out what we are going to do. You would love to have those two guys obviously. But we don’t, so we have to move forward.” As Sherman points out, German’s loss may be particularly impactful, as his multi-inning ability may force skipper Aaron Boone to opt for a 13-man pen in the playoffs instead of a 12-man pen.
While Chad Green, J.A. Happ, Tommy Kahnle, Adam Ottavino, James Paxton, Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Aroldis Chapman, and Zack Britton are all ’locks’ for the postseason staff, the final spots are more of a toss-up after the team’s loss of German and Betances. Luis Cessa, Cory Gearrin, Tyler Lyons, Stephen Tarpley, Ben Heller, and Jonathan Loaisiga are names floated by Sherman as possibilities to round out Boone’s October pen corps.
More notes from around the AL this Saturday eve…
- The Astros are facing what the Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome deems a “full-fledged fourth starter crisis” after another uninspiring performance from the previously steady Wade Miley (link). In Saturday’s game against the Angels, Miley failed to complete more than one inning for the third time in four starts. The 32-year-old Miley had looked to be a coup for the Astros front office after signing a one-year/$4.5MM deal this offseason, with a 3.06 ERA through his first 156 innings this year. Unfortunately, the calendar’s turn to September has spelled doom for Miley, who has allowed 18 earned runs in 7 ⅓ September innings. Manager A.J. Hinch is voicing somewhat of a hedged belief in the experienced lefty: “We’re going to figure it out,” manager A.J. Hinch told Rome. “He’s going to be really effective for us. But given the time, it’s a difficult time to assess because he’s got one start left before we need to make some decisions.” Looking back, regression was probably coming for Miley all along, as those first 156 innings were undermined by a .263 BABIP and 4.36 FIP mark.
- In a somewhat more humorous note to conclude tonight’s news, Sportsnet’s Arash Madani passes along an eyebrow-raising nugget concerning Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero Jr., it seems, doesn’t owe his prodigious power to an intensive weight room regimen: “I’ve never worked out at the gym before,” Guerrero Jr. told Madani. “I’ve never lifted weights before.” While it’s roundly mystifying to consider that “Vladito” has achieved phenomenal athletic fame without ever committing himself to either a ’leg’ or ’upper body’ day, it still may be disconcerting to Jays fans taking a sidelong glance at the youngster’s to-this-point suspect defense. Vlad Jr. has logged a -4 DRS figure in 792 innings at third base this year, with 17 errors to his credit. Guerrero Jr. tells Madani that he will be newly committing himself to weight training this offseason with the intent of remaining at third base moving forward.

Miley has been a disaster

Wtf?
bucnole31658
For 4 starts the rest of the season he’s been great
Eightball611
Wade as an assist??? Like many others he had just a career year.
User 4245925809
Miley was solid before going to Seattle for several years and same last year, plus most all of this season. Many teams would be more than happy with him penciled in as a 3-5 starter.
Whatever happened to him going to Seattle is a mystery. He always worked super fast, worked in a low 90’s FB with decent slider, but nothing came together once he arrived there and next Baltimore. Small fields/hitter’s parks couldn’t be it since he was fine at both fenway and Arizona. Figured myself it was coaching attempting to mess with his mechanics.
wreckage
So which country are you talking about? Vlad jr. is a Canadian/Dominican. Partially raised in Montreal (as well as born in), partially raised in the US (while Vlad sr played in LA) and partially raised in the Dom republic.
“Too fat” for a position is a joke as well. There have been obese players at every position since day 1 of baseball. Less likely in middle infield positions, but still has happened.
He made his name in the minors blowing it up. Yes his fathers name puts greater pressure on who he is and what he becomes, but he earned his promotion to the majors at his age 20 year on his own. Guys like Luis Robert arent up yet because they arent ready completely. Teams arent calling guys up and starting their clocks early just because they are Latino (Luis Robert) or because their father was a stud (Cavan Biggio). They are getting the call because they are ready. And as seen by the past couple weeks, VGJ has improved his defense in recent weeks, showing he is a capable defender. Watch hilites of teams other than the team you cheer for and you will see he has had some gem plays recently.
And i say all this as an anti-Jays fan. I live in western Canada and cheer for whomever the jays play first and my team next. Vlad is no slouch riding dads coattails. He is a gem in of himself.
Now is he overweight? Yes. And could his game use some improvements. Forsure, but he isnt some chump living in his dads shadows.

Guerrero Jr is just too fat to be a third baseman. He is not impressive in no way. The only good thing he can do like most players out of his country is bat and in his case his offense does not impress either.. a HR every now and then but that’s it. Yes he is too young he may get better, but then again he may not.. he is getting all of the hype because of who his father is,. At the most he is just a below average player..
SuperSinker
Well this was a lot of words.

“he is getting all of the hype because of who his father is,. At the most he is just a below average player..”
Stupid posts like this make me miss the ‘thumbs down’ button that we used to have here.

This post was “not impressive in no way”

I’m about to take out my garbage. Pity I can’t put that comment in the bag.
Bruin1012
The guy is 20 years old and holding his own in the big leagues. I expect he will break out maybe even next year. The future is bright for the Jays and their fans.
Latino6464 you do realize he is 20 years old. Worse case scenario the kid will be a great DH but I’m guessing he will be an average third baseman as he matures and realizes you have to watch your weight. I see him as similar to Devers.

@latino6464gmail-com
I won’t even touch the whole “like most players out of his country.” comment just because it’s kind of a stupid thing to say. But his bat seems legit. Keep in mind he’s only 20 yet sporting a very respectable 9% walk/17% k rate and hitting with power. To say he’s “at the most he is just a below average player” is a joke. As for “he is getting all of the hype because of who his father is” I think his minor league career slash of .331/.414/.531 says “hello, who the hell are you” And put some respect on my name”, Like moat 20 yo players he has things he needs to work on but I think every single one of the other 29 teams would love to have on their roster.
bucnole31658
Lol you don’t watch baseball I see.
TradeAcuna
The Yanks have overachieved all year. No reason to believe they can’t keep doing it.
amk3510
Miley can only backdoor cutter teams to death for so long. Not a suprise teams are catching up
Cam
Two things – it’s utterly disgraceful that he’s never stepped foot in a gym, considering being out of shape is the biggest reason why he’s terrible defender. How have the Blue Jays not pulled him aside and told him to sort it out?
Second, it’s a bad sign for his aging curve. He is going to age horribly.
Clearly the guy is naturally talented and a fantastic hitter. But it’s just as clear he’s coasted on that instead of actually working for it.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
I think this is an entirely plausible explanation. We’ve all met that one guy who is big and powerful and never works out ever. It’s genetics. Now your that kinda guy, but your dad is Vlad Guerrero, one of the biggest, most powerful hitters ever. I’d bet Vlad Guerrero Jr. has been hitting baseballs and running drills since he was of pre-school age. The dude can hit. And with the juiced ball, the power pitchers and the kind of contact you make if your’re the son of Vlad Guerrero…. My gosh, imagine how he’d play if he worked out. Then again I’ve read about how some of the strongest guys in the weight room aren’t necessarily the power hitters. Go figure.
southbeachbully
@Cam
I don’t see the big deal. He’s 20 yo. It’s baby fat. 30 years ago baseball players didn’t crush it in the gym like they do today. But please keep in mind, not going to the gym doesn’t mean he’s inactive and doing nothing. Just preparing for the game and playing the game is far, far, far more physically demanding than most casual gym rats. At his age, assuming he doesn’t have an eating disorder or binge behavior, he can melt 15-20 pounds easily and and turn some of it into muscle (although he needs to be more flexible and agile vs bulkier with muscle”. If I’m the Jays I’m more concerned with his work ethic and as long as that’s good then he’ll be fine.
Cam
If you’re in the Majors, you should be well past the point of carrying baby fat. He’s not a kid anymore. He’s been in the Blue Jays system for over 4 years – plenty of time to at least identify the fact that being out of shape will have an impact on his play – which, as evidenced by his play, is definitely a big reason why he’s a bad defender.
Being out of shape is a result of bad work ethic – it’s not a future concern, it’s a now concern. He’s already a liability in the field, which is shocking for a young guy.
It’s not like it’s a new concern either – scouts have been pointing out for a long time that his conditioning is a concern, and that he will need to be moved to a corner or a DH spot quickly if he doesn’t curb his weight problems.
Taejonguy
and that would likely be true for most 25 year old rookies just called up. the guy is 20… and his ability pushed him into the majors. while still having baby fat… like a lot of 20 year olds.
and he is not s disaster a 3rd defensively. you can see improvement to his footwork and positioning already. he is still learning and is 4-5 years behind simply due to his young age.
Cam
You’re missing the most basic point here – he has not even bothered stepping foot in the gym. I know he’s overweight, you know he’s overweight, everyone knows he’s overweight, and that it affects his play. And he hasn’t even taken a basic step towards rectifying it. It’s one thing to carry baby fat or be young – it’s another to have not even done anything to sort it out.
He hasn’t done basic things to get in shape because he never has had to – which is a polite way of saying, his work ethic is poor and by the time he puts down the cheeseburgers, he may already be a DH.

Cam you are 100% correct. Why anyone is questioning everything you said is beyond comprehension. These guys need a reality check and a clue for Christmas.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
If the Yankees are without Domingo German and Betances, then I’d go with Tarpley and Gearrin out of that group. I just don’t think the other teams have seen either enough to be comfortable against them and they are both reasonably lights out in 1/3 to 1 inning chunks, which is most likely how they’d be utilized.
Vlad Guerrero Jr… a few things 1) He supposedly lives with his grandparents during the season and parents in the off season and has a fairly strict lifestyle that is basically just sleep, eat, practice, play, sleep, eat, practice, play, etc. meaning its possible he’s very much just a kid who happens to play a grown man’s sport that pays grown man money 2) He’s only 19 but do we really believe he’s never ever worked out? 3) It is possible he’s never regularly worked out, if you’re the son of Vlad Guerrero, to be so naturally gifted and trained so well all your life that between natural athleticism and size due to genetics as well as the power that comes with making good contact and with this ‘juiced ball era’ it is entirely possible that Vlad Guerrero Jr. could get by as a .275 20 HR hitter and still make a notable mark on the game. The only real argument for the gym is that conditioning improves his body’s ability to withstand potential injuries and bounce back more quickly from actual injuries. That said I doubt he doesn’t do any strength training at all. Is that really possible? He’s on a major league ball club…wouldn’t there be peer pressure and a team mandate?
Yankeepatriot
I love tarpley and he has shown flashes of his potential during this year along with plenty of bad sadly. Gearrin is just plain bad
rivera42
Harmony and Gearrin? God no! CC will of course be on the roster. As for the 11th and 12th spots, they’ll most likely be Cessa and Loaisiga.
whyhayzee
Hershel Walker never lifted weights. He did ok.
Norm Chouinard
Same for Andre the Giant
its_happening
This explains why Vlad is overweight. More hunger to be the best, less hunger for Wendys and he’ll take that next step forward. Dude is talented.
Taejonguy
dude eats his grandmothers food. it is so good players from other teams ask for it. Jay’s need to get her working with a nutritionist.
its_happening
If his grandmother’s food has made him fat then he should probably stop eating his grandmother’s food. Can’t outrun a bad diet. Write that one down.
driftcat28 2
I’d probably go Cessa and Tarpley to round out the pitching staff and I don’t feel comfortable with that one bit
30 Parks
It’s not cute that Vlad has not bothered to lift weights. Being in shape is a central expectation of his job – come on, man. That said, here’s hoping Vlad has another level of talent yet to be realized.
southbeachbully
I think the Yanks will be ok but missing German hurts. I hope the situation isn’t as bad as it sounds.
Rotation: Paxton, Severino, Tanaka and Happ.
Bullpen: Chapman, Green, Ottavino, Britton, Khanle, Sabathia, Montgomery
Starters- Sanchez, DJ, Didi, Torres, Urshela, Judge, Gardner, Stanton, Voit
Bench-Romine, Maybin, Encarnacion, Wade and Ford
Hicks in for Ford if he’s healthy. Frazier in for Encarnacion if he’s not 100% healthy. Frazier has his defensive flaws but adds more to then bench than Encarnacion does.
spinach
So the debate is a 12-man or 13-man staff and you’re going with..11?
The post indeed missed Sabathia and he will be the tenth man. Not sure what’s going on with Montgomery so not sure he will make it, he had that one bad start.
Cessna should make it, that’s 11.
Maybe Loiasaga 12, Heller 13 if they take 13?
Your position players are fine, drop Ford to get it down to 13, I guess Wade to get down to 12 if needed.
Aoe3
Ive seen videos of Vlad moving huge tractor tires. I wonder… if skipping lifting weights in his early years will benefit his body long term?
its_happening
That’s a valid question.
