Another day, another alarming health situation for the Yankees. Second baseman Gleyber Torres left the team’s game against Toronto on Friday after slipping on the outfield grass and potentially suffering an injury to his right knee (video via MLB.com). Torres initially stayed in the game in the wake of his fourth-inning fall, but the Yankees removed him after the sixth. Injuries to stars has been one of the main themes of the Yankees’ season, but they’ve weathered all of them en route to 100 wins and an American League East championship. The Yankees are still playing for homefield advantage throughout the postseason, though, and will obviously aim for a World Series title once the playoffs arrive. With that in mind, New York can ill afford to lose one of the best middle infielders in baseball in the 22-year-old Torres. [UPDATE: Torres “felt a little weak in his lower legs,” manager Aaron Boone told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com and other reporters. He’ll get checked out Saturday.]
Here’s more from the division…
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun profiles Justin Smoak’s evolution into a clubhouse leader and mentor for the Blue Jays’ wave of upstart talents. Cavan Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are among the teammates who effuse praise for Smoak and the impact he’s already had on their young careers. “He’s a guy who has a relationship with every single guy in this locker room, no matter if they’re an up-and-down guy or if they’re playing every day,” Biggio says of Smoak. “It just shows how much he emphasizes being a good teammate and it just shows the kind of person he is overall.” Smoak fondly reminisces of the 2015-16 playoff runs and discusses how he and his family have come to consider Toronto a second home, though he also sounds like a veteran who recognizes the writing on the wall. MLBTR examined the pending free agent’s 2019 season earlier Friday.
- The Rays are likely to activate right-hander Yonny Chirinos from the injured list Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. Chirinos has been a starter for most of the year (a solid one at that), but he’ll work as a reliever for at the least the initial part of his return, according to Topkin. The Rays have been without Chirinos since they placed him on the IL on Aug. 5 with an inflamed middle finger on his pitching hand.
- The Red Sox are “likely” to shut injured infielder Michael Chavis down for the season, per Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald. Chavis will next take the field during winter ball in Puerto Rico, Hewitt adds. An oblique strain has kept the 22-year-old Chavis out of action since Aug. 11, and it appears his rookie campaign will end with a .254/.322/.444 line and 18 home runs in 382 plate appearances.
- Blue Jays minor league righty Luis Quinones received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drugs Nandrolone, John Lott of The Athletic reports. The ban will take effect at the beginning of the 2020 season. The 21-year-old Quinones was a 34th-round pick of the Jays this past June who produced stellar results in 36 2/3 innings between the rookie and low-A levels. He wrapped up his first professional season with a 2.95 ERA and 14.0 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9.

The Jays paid $50k bonus for this guy taken in the 34th round. Do they get any of it back or he just doesn’t get his minimum wage minor league salary during his suspension?
Codeeg
Why do you care about 50k?
spinach
When do sports teams get bonuses back months after paying them out?
coldbeer
When guys cheat.
maggot
The link says Luis Quinones was born in 1962. I’d say he’s on the down side of his career 🙂

I have to agree. 57 years of age is trending downward.
spinach
I don’t blame him for using under the circumstances, tough to compete with guys a third your age.

Not sure why Boone left Torres in the game after the play that injured him. He was clearly in pain. Yanks only playing for a slim chance at home field advantage in playoffs. Not worth risking one of their best young players health. Also not the first time Boone has done this. Voit, Encarnocion,Judge,Sanchez(I know I’m missing a few) have all been left in after breaking bones or pulled muscles. Boone has done amazing job handling all the injuries overall but he needs to take charge and pull players earlier to possibly save recovery time.

I am not big on Boone at all. I get that the team is successful even with all the injuries but I cannot for the life of me give credit to Boone for that. The team wouldve probably won the same amount of games, if not more, if you stuck a Mannequin in the dugout to take his place. This isnt like football where the head coach has a gigantic influence of the outcome of the game (I mean, they have an influence on the outcome, of course, just not as much as football is my point). Who gave Gary the sign to steal? Who left Gleyber in the game so close to the playoffs? Who takes Paxton out after 5 innings when youre winning 6-2 instead of giving your bullpen rest? Boone.
IMO the teams continued success despite these injuries can be accredited to the upper management that was able to acquire these players. Marcus Thames probably has a bigger influence on the success of the Yankees this year than Boone. There are too many times where the team wins in spite of Boone and not because of him. Too many times where Boone punts a game by putting in a Ryan Dull type in a close game only for the team to have to win by miracle-esque late game heroics.
I’d rather have Girardi and his binder than Boone and his incompetence

Did you know that personal insults dont actually prove me wrong?

Hey squirt benji-Your own words price you wrong. I would never take credit for such a stupid comment. I won’t go into details here as that would be discussing a moron’s opinion.
fits65
Hey Benji-nice showing why your friends call you a dope. You can enjoy watching Giraradi beat the life and vitality out Mets’ young players next year in Flushing.
That’s a good place to call your baseball home. You can scream your opinions that won’t matter with all of airplane noise from above.

I think the Jays bring back Smoak but only a 1 year/3M deal.

Who really cares?

I do.

Split the DH role with Vlad, Bo, Biggio, Gurriel, Hernandez, Grichuk, Tellez and, ok, everyone else. Smoak’s a good soldier. It’s time for the Jays to move on.

Yankees made the playoffs that great I hope they win a WS.
1. I don’t trust their starting Pitching.
2. Brett Gardner had a wonderful season but his Post Season stats are horrible and they will be playing him in LF and CF in every PS game. Matter of time before he goes 2-15.
I wanted P Corbin and C Morton and a not to resign Happ and CC and Gardner.
When it’s all said and done either I’m gonna be right or they’ will win a WS but I’m gonna go with no Yankees will not win another WS with CC and Gardner on the roster.

“Matter of time before he goes 2-15.”
Are you including spring training or next season?
fits65
He’s been posting his anti CC and Gardy hatred all season . Along with his buddy Geeson who disappeared with every Gardy HR or great play, they are the type of games that make bad names for real Yankee fans cringe.
The entire roster can’t be filled with the best players statistically. As one example when they were Gardy bashing Cashman earlier in the season it was because the spoiled rotten kits didn’t get their Machado nor Harper.
Well guess what simple minded Zee? Gardy has a higher slugging percentage then either of your $30 million + alternatives. And those teams have another 9 seasons of being overwhelmed with crazy salaries.
No pipe down little boys. Don’t go there with Stanton since he can defend himself with his performance now.

I watched the Jays last game and what may have been Justin Smoak’s last game as a Blue Jay, which I think would be a mistake. Smoak signed a contract extention in 2016 for 2 yrs at 2+mil per season and a third year club option at 3 mil for this season.
I know Roddy Tellez will be the 1st baseman going forward and I don’t have a problem with that,
But I think Smoak brings a lot of valuable things to the table. He is a rock at !st base, he doesn”t make errors and he saves a lot of bad throws made by the younger players.
As a mentor. The Jays have got young really fast (2nd youngest team in MLB). Those young guys need some older players to look up to and be able to come too. To date management has got rid of most of those possible mentors. The young guys all say they can come to Smoak about anything.
Jays currently don’t currently have a DH. use Smoak and Tellez at 1st base and DH. Smoak has a .300 obp.
So resign Smoak for one year at maybe 4 or 5 mil. let him finish his career as a Jay, and he provides some value to the team in many ways.
