The White Sox have outrighted first baseman AJ Reed, MLB.com’s Scott Merkin tweets. That leaves the club with two 40-man roster openings.
A former second-round pick, Reed was once considered a premium prospect with the Astros. But his bat has failed to translate in limited opportunities at the major-league level.
Reed had already been optioned off of the active roster to Triple-A, where he’ll continue after today’s transaction. Claimed from the Houston organization earlier this summer, the 26-year-old struggled badly in 14 games with the Sox and has continued to rack up strikeouts at Charlotte.

Shocker.

It was just another step in their ranking process.

@Dogbone
Excellent observation! Oh wait, I see with your other post, you had a typo with this post. Hehehe, priceless! Yet, still spot on. Once again, I give you a thumbs up!
Dogbone
It was just another step in their tanking process.

@Dogbone
How do you keep doing it? These pearls of wisdom leaves us wanting more from you. Yes, another step in their tanking process, the one where that will finally be complete in 2024, according to past posts from you. Amazing how you are able to effortlessly cut through the corporate BS Hahn spews forth every day. Thank you for showing us the truth.
Yet another thumbs up for you! Keep that great analysis coming! You have a great future ahead of you once you graduate high school.
bighurt35
Well that experiment was short lived
ChiSox_Fan
It was worth a shot. Who cares!
1B Abreu coming back for 2+ years. 2 HRs in last night’s game vs Angels.
Sox made miraculous comeback (scored 4 in 9th) and nearly won that game.
Ricky’s boys don’t quit!
Meanwhile, Cubs give up 6 to lose AGAIN on the road and were swept by the team the Sox beat 2/3 last week.
Cubs players have already quit on the season. Waiting to hear who their next Manager will be.
Ha ha!
Yeetus
Haha White Socks are a third place team again. When is Hahn going to realise a rebuild is supposed to build up to something more than a .450 team.
ChiSox_Fan
Better than Cubbies headed to 4th place!
Fly those “L” flags suckers!
Yeetus
They are going to make the playoffs for the 5th season in a row. Get real, man child
ChiSox_Fan
You call last year’s one game and out the “Playoffs”?!!!
Cubs score 1 vs Brewers and then 1 vs Rockies!
How laughable!!!!!
Loser.
petrie000
You can smack talk the Cubs when they are in 4th, not when they’re on pace to make the playoffs and the White Sox are already looking to 2020
Unless you want to look like a clown, of course
ChiSox_Fan
You are just upset the Cubs blew another road game last evening! 9th inning loss again!!
Cubs gonna be swept by Pitt and in 4th place soon enough!!! It’s inevitable!!
petrie000
Your pre-season prediction was they were a lock for 5th. So what you think is inevitable the rest of us consider your pipe dreams
DarkSide830
curious what you would have said if the Cubs were the ones to try it out.

Nice article
ba2929
Royals need to hop in on this guy. Nothing to lose and they don’t really have a 1st base prospect whatsoever right now. He’s only 26. Looks like a classic case of a guy rushed to the bigs.
DarkSide830
if only they had a Schwindel or Duenez type…wait
strosguy
His swing is way to long…. he wasn’t rushed he mashed every level but wasn’t even hitting in the PCL…..
Yeetus
What? A league average batter in the PCL bats .375/.490/.650 with 32 HR
DarkSide830
he was above league average every year prior to this one.
bravesfan
That was quick
fisk72
Watched his every ab – totally in a fog at the plate. He looked completely over
matched.
Bryan majeski
Not a surprise. He looked lost and was terrible!
metsie1
Not surprising. He looked completely overmatched. At 26 it’s getting late. Looks like a guy who runs into one every now and then. The rest of the time…nothing.
pplama
Sox scouting and analytics fail to see the obvious once again.
tharrie0820
Lord forbid a rebuilding team take a flier on a former top prospect
maximumvelocity
All they do is take filers in failed prospects from other organizations.
How about trying out some of the guys in AAA you have developed?
DarkSide830
Giants turned a few fliers and a good pen into a contender. That’s what rebuilding teams do.
cahill2005
Exactly, where’s Collins and Mercedes?
Dumpster Divin Theo
James McCann says hi
pplama
It’s obvious I’m not saying they shouldn’t take fliers. I’m saying that, once again, the player they chose, who every reputable source said is now a hopeless, deeply flawed non-prospect, failed.
It’s a pattern, and a warning about their ability to surround the few successful prospects with enough talent to be contenders.
Rallyshirt
good thing we didn’t get some $20m guy who doesn’t want to play anymore
nrd1138
@pplama: I’m sorry, with a rebuild going on. WHERE is the downside exactly?!
Its different if you are contending, or trying to, and you pull one of these. Heck maybe the guy needs a change of scenery, maybe he needed another voice to get through to him. It costs no prospects so again where is the downside? However, a team who is rebuilding has nothing to lose in picking up a guy. You are seeing it with guys all the time this season (and some of those digging in the bin are contending teams) with the changes to the trade deadline.
Idioms for Idiots
@pplama
You crack me up. Everyone knew this was a dumpster dive, a flyer, whatever you want to call it. It was a worth a shot. It would be different if the Sox were on the cusp of a playoff spot, but since they’re not, they can afford to take freebies like this right now.
What’s the worst that can happen? They just replace this turd with another turd, which is exactly what happened. It was a small risk, it bombed, who cares, just move on.
pplama
A shortsighted view ignorant of a concerning pattern.
Idioms for Idiots
@pplama
Oh, you mean the pattern of ignoring analytics when acquiring “talent” for the team. Yes, this problem was especially glaring with the returns from the Sale, Q, and Eaton trades. They certainly settled for too little of a return in each deal. Or when they drafted turds like Madrigal and Vaughn. I can’t believe Hahn still has a job after those jaw-dropping gaffes which has set the team back years.
Perhaps you should send your resume to Reinsdorf and a cover letter detailing the reasons Hahn should be fired and why you should be the one who replaces him. Unfortunately, you are overqualified for the job. Plus, Reinsdorf wouldn’t know talent if it slapped him in the face. Look no further than Michael Jordan as Exhibit A. So him not hiring you to replace Hahn would be yet another golden opportunity he would let slip through his fingers.
You Cub trolls are hilarious.
maximumvelocity
Hahn has successfully traded All-Star talent for prospects. His free agent track record is terrible. He has not drafted a single position player who has been able to stay in the lineup. His track record on drafting pitchers is mediocre. His track record on trading for vet played includes giving away Tatis, Semien and Bassitt for pitchers who were not good. He has wasted more than 30 million this year on underperforming players. And he has not posted a winning season as GM. He has failed in his drafts. He has failed miserably in pro scouting. He has failed in player development. He would not still have a job in almost any other organization.
Idioms for Idiots
@maximumvelocity
As for the trades, Tatis was a throw in who never had an AB in minor league competition before the trade. Semien and Bassitt were traded after the ’14 season and are just now each having a good season, 5 years later.
As for the underperforming players, sure, I agree on that one, though not even analytics could predict Alonso being that bad for the Sox. Though we should ask pplama, the analytics expert, on that one. When so many complain the Sox are too tight with their money, I guess the Sox aren’t so tight with that money.
Yes, he hasn’t posted a winning season, though with the last 3 seasons, teams in full rebuild mode aren’t going to have winning seasons.
True, he hasn’t done well in drafts, I’ll give you that. His biggest success has been TA so far, and it took a while with him. Of course, Madrigal and Vaughn could change that, though drafting that high, you better get great players.
Pro scouting, to an extent, I’ll give you that one. But you have Robert, plus the prospect haul in the Sale, Q, and Eaton trades. Still, overall, I agree with you on that one.
Player development, I definitely agree. I’m not even going to try and put a positive spin on that one.
Look, I don’t think Hahn walks on water. He definitely has his flaws. But for all those who act like he can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, he’s done a great job setting the foundation for the rebuild. You figure that with Cease, Kopech, Giolito, Lopez, Dunning, Eloy, Yoan, Robert, Madrigal, and Vaughn, that’s 10 potential key players in the rebuild. That’s a ton of high-end prospects right there.
Whether or not the rebuild turns into the ultimate success, WS ring(s), remains to be seen, and he still has plenty to do. But at least he’s given this team a chance to be a perennial contender once the rebuild is over.
That’s definitely enough for Hahn to keep his job and see the rebuild through.

I’m sorry, but we do not have room on our roster for psycho-scissor boi

Or Adam Mini-Swish Eaton
Dumpster Divin Theo
Nice pep talk! Another Sox fan who has observed the Stro, Cub and Ray examples that gets it.
jb19
Just like JD Martinez right Sox fans? Oh right…. Tyler white just like Max Muncy too……
Pops
Orioles should get this guy.
maximumvelocity
So, are they going to add two of the AAA prospects, or are they looking for another no contact left handed corner guy?
cwsOverhaul
Hopefully Mendick can come up as a super utility and Mercedes to DH since they apparently haven’t put enough money on the table for Robert to sign a l-t extension that sacrifices 1yr of free agency.
rayrayner
Robert got that big bonus. He doesn’t need to sign an extension.
cwsOverhaul
Agreed, but WSox still trying to get a deal done before they promote. Wasting time in minors.
Rallyshirt
People do not KNOW Luis Robert

I’m sure we will see him next year.

And I am looking forward to it.
Priggs89
Worth a shot. Now drop him from the AAA team and move up Sheets.
bobby clementhay
Reed should get serious about his health; he needs to hire a nutritionist, lose at least 50 pounds, and work hard to get into the best physical and mental condition of his life….
cahill2005
Robert, Mendick, Collins, and Mercedes need to come up ASAP. Get them acquainted to the big leagues and see what you have.
Rallyshirt
I like the idea of 26 man rosters going forward but…
Elimination of 40-man active roster limit in September. From September 1st through the end of the championship season, all Clubs must carry 28 players on the active roster.
I’m not sure where the logic is here?
Dumpster Divin Theo
No need. Mid April 2020 is just fine…
nrd1138
I get the service time argument but I would like to see Madrigal and Robert up in September.
I guess it all depends on if the Sox really are ‘all in’ in 2020. If they are, I say bring them up now and get them acclimatized to the majors.
If they are only hoping to contend for a WC birth in 2020, then leave them until next April..
However, if the Sox are going to try to open that ‘window’ next season, then get these guys up now so they are prepared for the beginning of the next season and ready to help them win games immediately. Otherwise those games they lose at the beginning of next year worrying about service time may cost them a play off spot..
Rallyshirt
The fact they signed Eloy, when they could’ve waited instills a lot of confidence and might save a few bucks. For special players, I think it’s good for baseball. And it gives the hindsight police something to rag about 6 years from now.
