The White Sox have activated Yoan Moncada from the 10-day injured list, as per a team announcement. Outfielder Ryan Cordell was optioned to Triple-A yesterday to open up a spot for Moncada on the 25-man roster.
Moncada was in the midst of a breakout season when he was sidelined with a Grade 1 hamstring strain back on August 1. The infielder has hit .301/.358/.535 with 20 homers over 409 plate appearances, with some outstanding hard-contact metrics (via Statcast). Moncada ranks in the 98th percentile in exit velocity, and in the 93rd percentile in hard-hit percentage. While the Sox are long out of any postseason contention, Moncada will get five more weeks to add to what has already been an excellent season.
After posting average numbers in his first two Major League campaigns, Moncada’s emergence in 2019 has shown why he was regarded as one of the sport’s best prospects. The White Sox acquired Moncada and three other noteworthy prospects from the Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade back in December 2016, and Moncada now stands as one of the major faces of Chicago’s rebuilding project.
Senioreditor
I just don’t understand it. Players today are bigger, stronger, train year round and have vastly better nutrition and they’re always injured? Ripken, Garvey, Ryan etc…. played nearly 2 decades and rarely if ever ended up on the DL. Am I missing something?
saavedra
Those guys are exceptions, not the rules. Injuries have always happened.
Senioreditor
Hardly, most teams fielded primarily the same 8 players throughout the season in the 60’s-80’s, with Sunday’s off for catchers. Most teams had multiple starters with 35+ starts per year. Mike Marshall pitcher in nearly 200 games in 2 seasons, I could go on and on but why it’s pretty obvious.
southbeachbully
Injuries happened but there was no TJ surgery and it doesn’t explain how a large number of pitchers managed to pitch thousands of innings without missing significant time.
30 years ago, a blip in time, there were 52 pitchers that threw 200 IP or more in 1989. Fast forward to 2018 and there were only 13. This year, I would be shocked if we had more than 5. One can argue it’s smarter to limit pitchers and use the bullpen more but injuries don’t seem to be decreasing despite the limits we set on pitches/innings thrown.

Nope your not missing anything! I’ve told my self that for a while now and have wondered the same thing.

Being bigger, stronger, and training year round may be a clue
Lars MacDonald
There are multiple reasons…
– Strength training is definitely a culprit, especially if players don’t also do flexibility training.
– Teams are much more likely to put players on the IL now, due to the huge salary commitments for players.
– The culture used to be; never admit your hurt unless you absolutely have to. It’s still like that to some extent but it’s changed a lot.
– With the velocity that pitchers are throwing, if you get plunked these days there is a greater chance of getting hurt.
throwinched10
A lot of time on the injured list is spent with little things like blisters and tight hamstrings. Things that would have been given the classic “just walk it off” line back in the day. Some of that is owners protecting their large financial investments in players and some of it is players trying to protect their own health/being big babies.
chisoxjon
Guys today are nearly all muscle. That was not true of the great players in the past. It sounds funny but you cant pull fat.

@ReverieDays
Let me guess, you could care less about the Sox and nothing they do concerns you.
Funny how many Cub trolls come on these Sox message boards with the same view.
Like I said a few weeks back, you can tell the end of the Sox rebuild is near. Cub trolls are coming on these message boards in droves, because this is their last chance to troll about the rebuild. They know better times are coming for the Sox.
simschifan
When you are in last place for 14 years there’s only one way to go and that’s up. Btw let’s just ignore all the Sox goons that come on here and bash the cubs any chance they get. It goes both ways so don’t act like it’s just cub fans man
ChiSoxCity
There’s a distinct difference between cubs and White Sox fans online. The hate is more personal for cubs fans, and has little to nothing to do with baseball. I think most Sox fans have followed the cubs, even pulled for them the last four years. But Sox fans are more observant and cynical. We don’t drink the koolaid, and we don’t hesitate to criticize either Chicago-based team. cubs fans practice blind loyalty when it comes to sports. They view dissent as disloyalty. There is a streak of factionalism, elitism, and racism among cubs fans online as well. They equate the White Sox with urban blight, crime and blackness. Any attempts to have a conversation about baseball quickly digress to these elements when they know you’re a White Sox fan. Sox fans hold their ground and fight back with the one thing ALL cubs fans detest the most: the truth.

@simschifan
“BTW let’s just ignore all the Sox goons that come on here and bash the cubs any chance they get”
Um, you do realize this is an article about the Sox and the first negative post on this story was from Cub troll ReverieDays—you know, the one that started this specific thread. Let’s see what your first post said:
“Why would do expect a sux fan to know anything about baseball?”
A very uplifting, respectful post from you. I can’t possibly thank you enough.
It’s not like I went to a story on the Cubs and just started ripping on them unprovoked. Hey, I don’t have a problem with the Cubs themselves. I rooted for them in ’16, and basically between the WS win and the 100-year drought, what’s the point of being hateful toward the Cubs. Plus, I have many friends who are Cub fans.
The problem I have is with each article on the Sox on this site, almost half the comments are from Cub trolls. I could even see if the article was about Cease or Eloy, but when this one’s about Moncada returning from the DL, what reason would you even need to come on here to comment unless it’s to troll. We’re human, we’re not just going to let you guys come on here and troll and just stay silent the entire time. Would you stay silent if the tables were turned? That’s what I thought.
BeeVeeTee
This is 100% correct!! From my experience most Cubs’ fans are mainly yuppies that are from the burbs or transplants from different states which makes it funny.
kidaplus
Typical cub fan who doesn’t know squat — I’m 42 years old… the white sox have finished in last ONE time in my life… ONE… when it was intentional rebuild..
In fact, they’ve only finished second to last 6 times in that span… 5 of which are in the rebuild of the last 6 years….
Now the Cubs have finished last TEN times in my life.. TEN… and second to last NINE times…. NINE, Mrs. Buehler.
Sox were 4th in wins in 90’s and 7th in 00’s… so yeah, big whoop theyve had a bad 7 year stretch, but it doesnt come close to rank futility the cubs put out there decade after decade. .
ChiSoxCity
Yeah, was going to mention that. I had to look it up—the White Sox finished last in their division once during the last 30 years in 2013. cubs fans really are delusional and clueless about baseball.
BeeVeeTee
The issue with the last seven years was bad signings and draft picks by Kenny Williams before Rick Hahn took complete control as General Manager. Hahn has been doing what he said he was going to do with fixing the White Sox farm system through draft picks, trades and international signings. Once that was completed the White Sox would start going after a free agent. We should expect Hahn to be active this offseason since he 7/10 there.

I see the only Pads troll in existence came back. I’m surprised after Tatis went down for the year we would see you on here still trolling. I gotta admit, you have stones.
Nothing against Tatis at all. It’s a shame he went down. Super player who’s great for the game, you never want to see that happen. Even though the Sox unfortunately will go down as the team on the wrong end of one of the worst trades in recent history, I’m very happy for him and his success so far.
The few Pads fans I’ve ever met were very classy, so you must stick out like a sore thumb on the Pads message boards. But I suppose every team has at least one troll the fan base is embarrassed by. Congratulations on that “honor”, Show Me Your Grapes.
Show Me Your Tatis
@83sox94win05 hey I was siding with you with that last comment. But if that’s the game you wanna play, we can talk about how dumb the White Sox are for not either extending or trading Abreu by the deadline. Or for not trading him in the first place when they decided to sell off Sale, Quintana and Eaton.
Oh and if you think I’m the only Padres troll on here you must not be on here all that much. Our fanbase (like all fanbases) has some REAL degenerates.
chitown311
I do remember. They are the same ones peeking through their blinds at the likes of Gleyber Torres, Dylan Cease, Jorge Soler, Eloy Jimenez, Dan Vogelbach, DJ Lemaheiu, Tommy LaStella, just to name a few. Don’t hate what you can’t have!!
rayrayner
A thinly-veiled shot at the Cubs, but probably just Torres would be helping them right now if he hadn’t been traded. Eloy and Cease are not playoff-race caliber yet. Vogelbach was blocked by Rizzo. Soler is having a great offensive year, but he has not been better than Schwarber the last three years combined. LaStella not significantly better than Bote or Russell or Happ. LeMahieu is ancient history and was a free agent signing last winter.
simschifan
Why would you expect a sux fan to know anything about baseball?
mcdusty49
Sometimes the comment board on White Sox posts remind me of those fans attacking the Royals first base coach back in the day
Priggs89
“LaStella not significantly better than Bote or Russell or Happ.“
What fantasy land are you living in right now?
ChiSoxCity
You can’t judge a player by their first season in the MLB, but 22 HRs out of Eloy with five weeks to go ain’t half bad. He will get better with time. Torres was a terrible move by the cubs. Same deal for Cease, though I don’t think he has the pitch selection to be an effective starter. No reliever in baseball is worth a highly regarded prospect, especially a reliever who’s due to be a free agent three months later.
simschifan
Most of them are like that, I lived with a few as a child
chicagofan1978
Torres got Chapman, gotta give to get, it happens all the time in baseball. Jimenez was a bad deal by the Cubs but both this year are contributing to their teams. Jimenez will be a star for years to come. Hopefully he will play in some meaningful games.
thurmanmerman33
Lol, “Sux”, I get it, very clever!
ChiSoxCity
Torres got [three months of] Chapman. Fixed.
chicagofan1978
That 3 months helped get them a ring
rayrayner
@priggs: Great pinch hitter and great start to this year to make the All Star Team. Good for Tommy. I like him and pulled for him during his existential crisis.
But he’s got no glove in the infield and too slow to play the outfield. Plus his hitting will probably regress a bit when he comes back – Statcast expected stats are not as good as his actual.
Bote, Russell, Happ all offer better versatility, defense, and youth than LaStella who’s 30 already. I wouldn’t be surprised if Theo and Jed were doing him a favor by trading him to the Angels where he’d get more playing time. He wasn’t getting it on the Cubs.
ChiSoxCity
The cubs could have traded for a good closer with years left on their contract and won back-to-back rings if they weren’t so desperate. 2 > 1.
Show Me Your Tatis
It pains me to have to return to this issue. But for what it’s worth, I’d like to make it clear. The Cubs would have still won the 2016 World Series without Aroldis Chapman.
cwsOverhaul
WSox to make early aggressive push for MadBum in FA as others bid up/wait for Cole to decide. Winner rejuvenated lefty starter good fit as signature jumpstart move.
BeeVeeTee
I rather have Bumgarner than Cole but there is going to be some serious bidding for those guys.
Rallyshirt
I think we’ll pass on Bumgarner. It’s a character issue, shouting at umps, opposing hitters, etc. You gotta watch the games to see this. I don’t think he’s the right fit for us.
Thomas Bliss
Either way we’ll probably end up right signing Nova and maybe someone like Clayton Richard.
Thomas Bliss
Excuse me resigning Nova.
ChiSoxCity
The Sox are not bringing Clayton Richard back a third time, and they are not re-signing Nova. They won’t need mediocre innings-eaters to fill out the roster anymore. What they need is a quality starter with playoff experience to lead that young rotation.
Rallyshirt
CWS leadership structure is already, and fortuitously, in place.
Abreu, McCann, Giolito, Anderson
The question is, can we find a rotation piece who fits our deal?
Thomas Bliss
I didn’t say it was a good idea or I wish it would happen. I can just see it happening.
ChiSoxCity
Rallyshirt, team leaders are fine. I’m talking about an Ace with playoff experience who can be relied upon to miss bats and keep runs off the board in a Game 1 of the playoffs. Every championship staff has this with a few lone exceptions. The Sox can easily afford to sign an Ace like Cole (preferred) or MadBum (would be fine as well). I’d rather at elite pitching than a Rendon type position player given who the Sox have on the roster. You can never have too much pitching, and Cease with his 100 mph fastball might be better suited for a closer role. Especially considering his lack of command on most of the pitches in his repertoire.
Rallyshirt
Chisox, I agree with this philosophy 99%, but this could be that unique situation where we have to think about letting ALL the starters we got figure it out another year and make a play for a serious threat with the bat.
When I saw Puig in Cincinnati and what energy he brought to the entire city, then following his surge with the Indians (would not be where they are without him). I think it’s time we start playing some hardball.
We take him from the Indians, they will hate us even more. We scare Minnesota’s weak point staff. And if we give up 4-6 runs every now and then we can always come back. It’s game on Central.
Ricky’s boys… this fits.
Question is, could he be tamed just a little (in a good way) playing with his countrymen and Latin coach? The answer, for me, is YES!
BeeVeeTee
I would not mind the White Sox taking on the remainder of Schrezer’s deal if the Nationals are looking to move him in the offseason to start a rebuild!l
ChiSoxCity
You make a good point about, Rallyshirt. Puig would be scary in the heart of that Sox lineup. They could definitely use more run production. Still, the Sox seemed loaded at the corner OF. Getting a veteran Ace under contract would make a bigger impact towards contention. The bats are coming
Rallyshirt
Max is, well, probably staying in DC
Dogbone
Yeah, ‘an aggressive push’ for the Chisox, is just enough to make it look like your trying to bid, but your sure you’ll be outbid by a legit bid.
But it makes it appear that Reinsdork is attempting to compete. The fans and talk shows then overhype their effort.
ChiSoxCity
Hey Dogpooh, what are you going to do when the White Sox start smoking everybody next year? Your “insight” will be missed on MLBTR.
Idioms for Idiots
@ChiSoxCity
Exactly. Either he’s nowhere to be found next year, or he will be idiotic enough to think the rebuild is still taking place with no end in sight.
Dogbone is a parrot who brings nothing meaningful to any conversation. He only has 3 lame, tired arguments: (1) the Sox are in their 7th or 8th year of their rebuild, (2) their rebuild won’t end until 2024, and (3) “Reinsdork” is cheap (with some weak joke to complement it). He doesn’t add any meaningful insight in his posts. You can see each post coming from a mile away.
It’s been hard for me to heckle his posts lately because it’s the same thing. You would think it would be easy, because he makes himself such an easy target, but I end up saying the same things over and over myself, because there’s only so many ways to respond to the same weak posts.
cwsOverhaul
He’d join TA as a player with an edge besides talent. Help offset the ‘Peter Principle’ manager until he’s gone.
Rallyshirt
I prefer Puig and expect for him to fit in better
simschifan
I think it’s cute you Sux fans think you have any chance at signing Garret Cole. You think he wants to play in that dump for that dumpster fire team and owner? Get a clue. The Reds have a better shot at signing him than the Sux
Megatron2005
Don’t be mad at us because the Cubs “dynasty” never happened.
simschifan
Nobody believed there was gonna be a dynasty but stupid baseball writers. They won with this core and continue to win with at least an outside chance of doing it again. It’s a fact big time free agents do not sign on the south side. Unless they totally ridiculously overpay for Cole you ain’t getting him. He will be a dodger or Giant
Idioms for Idiots
@simschifan
True, except for Albert Belle, Jose Abreu, even Adam Dunn was a big time F/A at the time of the signing. And if you want to go way back to Reinsdorf’s early years, Fisk and Luzinski were big time F/A signings in the early 80’s.
But if you ignore all those, then you’re right: it’s a fact big time free agents do not sign on the south side.
ChiSoxCity
Who are the “big time” free agents flocking to the cubs? Lester? Sure, first major free agent signing in club history. Other than that you got nothing. Darvish was not, and is no longer big time. He came to Chicago because nobody else trusted him at the past three or four years. You guys have lost out on numerous free agents to St. Louis, Milwaukee and Atlanta. But yeah, keep deluding yourself about top free agents wanting to play for the cubs if it helps you sleep at noght.
simschifan
Andre Dawson, Moises Alou, John lackey, Ben Zobrist, Derrick Lee, Craig Kimbrel, Jason Heyward, who have the Brewers or Cardinals signed in free agency lately that the cubs wanted?
ChiSoxCity
Dawson gave the cubs a blank contract 30 years ago because nobody else wanted him. Great player, but not an example of big time free agents flocking to Wrigley. None of the other players you mentioned fit that subscription either. Thanks for playing, pick up your parting gift on the way out thanks.
ChiSoxCity
Subscription? lol
cwsOverhaul
Hmm. WSox could really use a good veteran lefty bat for RF in lieu of Puig since they are heavy right-handed. Unfortunately, no FAs fit the bill for RF or CF even if they were flexible to move Robert to right. May need to trade for that weakness. Recently promoted Nick Hostetler probably scouring pro rosters ahead to pinpoint a few targets and advise Hahn which perhaps overrated prospects they can afford to lose in that hole-filling effort.

chicagofan1978
Exactly, we’re and I say we’re loosely all look stupid right now to fans of other teams. How many marlins fans comment on here thinking “jeez I’ve seen the exact same amount of World Series victories for my team as the Sox and Cubs combined’”
It’s childish and ridiculous and I am not gonna be a part of it anymore. If I state a fact I’m called an apologist cause I’m not a White Sox troll like chitown311 and Chisoxcity.
