Mariners infielder Tim Beckham has been suspended for eighty games under the MLB-MLBPA Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, according to a league announcement. The league says that Beckham tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug Stanozolol.
The 29-year-old Beckham was the first overall pick of the 2008 draft. He joined the Seattle organization on a one-year, $1.75MM contract over the winter after struggling last season with the Orioles.
In a statement, Beckham places the blame on a “tainted” substance he was given by “a trusted source.” (Twitter link via MLBPA.) But his appeal to the league was already considered and rejected.
Beckham had been in the midst of a solid bounceback season. He has continued to struggle to reach base consistently, but made up for that with sufficient pop to produce at a league-average rate. Over 328 plate appearances in Seattle, he owns a .237/.293/.461 slash with 15 home runs.
It had seemed that Beckham was a candidate to be traded at the deadline — or, perhaps, to move via waiver claim this month. Instead, he’ll spend the rest of the year on the restricted list and seek a new chance next year. Beckham will still have to sit out for 32 games to begin the 2020 season.
Stealing my thunder, I see.
There goes his HOF chances.
While Pete Rose the all time hits leader had been banished from MLB for 30 years for betting on baseball these idiots get half a year off for proven cheating. Not even to mention Jennry Mejia who was “banned for life” from MLB for 3 failed ped tests who was let back in to baseball.
Agreed, however, Pete had his chance to confess and didn’t until it was too late, or else he’d probably be in by now. So not entirely not his own fault. But ultimately I agree, he should be in.
If anyone truly believes Pete Rose is the only professional athlete to directly or indirectly bet on games in a particular league….you’re crazier than David Stern.
That whole, having an affair with a 14 year old, doesn’t bother you???
Does Pete Rose have to be the only one in order to get caught and be punished?
With any given offense, we never catch and punish every single offender, should we let the ones we do catch go unpunished as a result?
F Pete Rose. F Barry Bonds. F Tom Brady. F Bill Belichick. F etc. etc. etc.
If you don’t want to tarnish your legacy…don’t tarnish your legacy.
They all knew what they were doing.
The real difference that no one talks about is why the league sees betting as worse than steroids.
Though both can effect the outcomes of games, only betting gives the power to influence outcomes and the benefits thereof into the hands of a group other than MLB owners, bookies.
I wonder if it’s illegal for the owners to bet on games…I doubt it
Completely agree.
But I’ll go further than that on Rose. Betting on baseball is the one unforgivable crime against the game — PEDs and other forms of cheating have (at least in my view) a far smaller impact on the perceived integrity of the results of the game than having players (or worse, managers) gambling on the game.
So while I would not let Bonds and Clemens and other known PED users in, I will understand when they finally do get in far more than I would if Rose were ever to get in.
F Tom Brady? What do he do to cheat? All the simpletons who think the salary cap solves problems in sports just throw out numberous narratives to tarnish his greatness. Anyone intelligent knows the difference.
tom brady didnt need to inflate the balls to kick the crap out of the colts that game lol
Your right, he didn’t have to but he did, and then he lied about it.
ABStract…..
Rule 21D covers all baseball personnel…. “Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee”, so yes owners are not allowed to bet.
What a Jack Azz !!
Unfortunately your talking out your azz and do not know the facts.
Pete Rose willingly agreed to and signed a lifetime ban. I’m sure we still don’t know 1/2 the story of what was being hidden but I’m sure the next time he needs a few more $$$ he’ll have another book to sell and will reveal just a little bit more.
This thread needs more logic:
What does this have to do with Pete Rose? Both activities have clear penalties.
And so what if other people are doing what Rose did and not getting caught? Do we think this all somehow excuses Rose? And we are really using Beckham as an example to suggest Rose should be in the HoF?
Sure, Maddoff stole money from a lot of people but you know what he didn’t do, illegal drugs. That is this thread. That is how this thread sounds.
very well said!
Those two things are not related at all. There is a set of rules for both. This one has an 80 game suspension and the other one is lifetime. It says it right in the rule. Pete had his chance and he blew it.
Besides, if we’re going to ban all known cheaters, why hasn’t G. Perry been banned and kicked out of the Hall of Fame?
Note: I initially spelled out his first name, but it apparently violates the site’s language restrictions.
I am sure it was an accident.
Definitely lol
yes lol he never knowingly used it
Lol stanzololololol
Stanozo….lol
more like Seattlolololol
So shockedddddddd. He’s such a good personnnnn
Is he? Is he reeeeallllly?
Will there be an empty chair at your Thanksgiving table this year?
Has any player suspended for steroids ever not offered an excuse or claimed it was an accident?
Andy Pettite. probably Canseco
Andy Pettite admitted it, but said he used it after an injury to heal faster. That was probably a lie. At least I think so.
He may have been truthful about that. He used HGH, which is not a great drug for performance enhancing. It wasn’t explicitly banned when he used it either, but he got it through illicit means and admitted he knew it was wrong.
Pettite used it juuuust that one moment in time and just to rehab an injury. While the Great Giambino “apologized” for something but couldn’t go into specifics bro…nonetheless these two great Yankees were lauded as heroes for being stand up.
Meanwhile, Roger blamed his wife.
Ryan Braun. But that’s a whole different can of worms.
Wait, you can get steroids from worms? Awesome!
Ya, Braun only flat out denied it and got his urine handler fired before he admitted to it. Suppose that’s not claiming it’s an accident technically.
Urine handler or Piss Boy?
Pupil of Pissery
old English lol love it.
Bonds
ARod
Clemens
Braun
Eric Thanes
Domingo Santana
Rafael Palmerio
Marcell Ozuna
I’m sure theres a lot more. The top were all guilty.
Ryan Braun lied about it twice. manipulated the system. Cost someone their job. Was able still be considered MVP over Matt Kemp. Then he taught several teammates and now former teammates how to pass the drug test.
Thames, Santana, and Ozuna didn’t take PEDs
He’s a troll Cubs fan listing players he doesn’t like on rival teams in addition to the usual suspects. I notice he left Sammy Sosa off his incomprehensible list.
Thames played in Korea 2013-16 taking HGH, steroids, and everything else available while training with body builders.
yeah,Braun is a serious POS!
bonds has never tested positive for steroids while they were against mlb rules. btw, about 90% of your favorite players of that era more than likely used ped.
Vizionaire
PED’s have been against the rules since June, 1991. The MLBPA (Donald Fehr) fought testing, citing player invasion of privacy, until congress forced it.
Mark McGwire basically lied to congress in a round about way and got a job as a major league hitting coach.
McGwire didn’t lie. He just refused to admit it when not legally required to do so. He then did admit it before getting that job.
Anyway, A-Rod is someone who admitted it without giving an excuse.
Lanidrac
A-Rod only admitted it after he had to confess to the feds to avoid prosecution. Prior to that he lied about it for years including the years when he represented the Taylor Hooton Foundation which is a low as it gets.
Who woulda guessed
I know that .237 15 47 line was glaringly obvious. just sheds light it’s not only the top stat guys who want to get the edge
Well he got off to a pretty hot start. I wonder when he started taking it.
It also sheds light on Shed Long..
Well, PEDs don’t help your contact skills, so it makes sense that only his power improved.
Dee Gordon, Robinson Cano… Mariners just like the ped users
I doubt that. But it does raise the question about the amount of oversight by the M’s medical staff. Cano last year, Beckham this year. Who’s next?
Don’t forget Nelson Cruz.
Nelson Cruz is a Twin and was a Ranger when he was suspended.
Yankees love the ped users too.
yeah, at least the M’s havent stolen WS using them. (yes im a Phils fan salty about 2009, but i think i have a right to be)
…. did you say Big Poppy ….?? …. ohh, wait a minute… he’s a Boston Hero and can’t be on the list!!
Yeah, I’m sure they were thrilled about Cano’s suspension. It’s not like they were trying to get into the post season and he was one of their best hitters.
Lol this is a performance-enhanced season for Tim Beckham? 0.2 WAR, 0.293 OBP?
Guess he didn’t get the same magic as Frankie Montas did with whatever he took.
PEDs don’t help your contact skills.
Given his performance, he needs to ask his supplier for a refund.
Shame on you Tim Beckham. The Mariners have inherited the Cubs role as the perennial losers – they’ve used 60 different players this yr, what’s 1 more?
Well Milwaukee is about to be 0-51 in franchise history. Perfection is hard to beat.
And yet they’ll still have 57 years to go to match the Cubs drought. I notice you left a few teams off ahead of the Brewers in the category for some reason.
Well, they’re tied with the Nationals and Padres as the second oldest franchises to have never won a World Series.
However, the Texas Rangers are the oldest franchise in that category, while the Nationals haven’t even won a Pennant (the Mariners being the only other franchise in that dubious category).
What a bum
Well….I’m pretty sure that he wasn’t missed by the Rays or the Orioles. Now the Mariners. Could anyone else be crazy enough to give this guy a roster spot?
Hasn’t been to the Giants yet.
This coming from a Mets fan lol.
Biggest news is he’s now ineligible for the playoffs.
Chances are he’ll be retired by the time the M’s make it to the playoffs the next time….
This is why the mets will win the world series. They never have any scandels like this and they have the most consistant players in the league
Familia anyone?
Mejia? Familia?
Obviously Mejia doesn’t count…. he only got caught enough times to get a lifetime ban from the game.
Robbie Canó? Very Streaky. Also the Mets aren’t making the playoffs. Horrible defense, a GM that acts like he’s on drugs, and good teams to catch. You think there better than the Nats, Cubs or Cardinals? No way
*Their
*they’re
I bet mets2020 agrees with you.
Consistent doesn’t mean good…..
Str0man was banned, Reyes domestic abuse … Piazza possibly
Some folks don’t get sarcasm 2020. At least, I hope that was sarcasm.
I’m waiting for the announcement: “I deeply regret that this has occurred and I would never knowingly put this substance into my body. I believe that this occurred due to a tainted supplement (which I will not name, nor provide to anyone to verify). I will have no further comment on this matter”.
“I want to apologize to the fans, and the Seattle Mariners organization, and will continue to fight to prove that this was clear misfortune.”
If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying… People make the decision to cheat, and deal with the consequences. Obviously they have to offer the same canned denial/response as everyone. Same goes with celebrities/politicians who are found to unfaithful in their marriage. You don’t have PR people for no reason…
Beckham: Man this is good. copy and paste.
Would someone mind “tainting” one of Kinsler’s substnaces???
Wow! What an idea! Front offices could do this on the sly to get rid of bad contracts (at least for a little while)!
Chris Davis beware!
Wonder what percentage of guys in the league are getting away with taking illegal substances and beating it. If we had 100 guesses on who got popped I doubt anyone would have said Beckham.
if you ask me these tests aro too random. i know they want to catch guys off guard, but if they made them frequent and routine guys would just not do them in the first place. guess it’s what law-enforcement practice you like.
Is “trusted source” code for “some doctor said this could really help me out and winked.”
My guess on who’s taking a “trusted” source right now…the Whole Marlins team. Oohhh burnnn!
Thanks Jerry!
What would happen if he got traded then suspended after he was on the new team? Especially if the test result happened while he was with his original team? Could the trade be voided? Or is it buyer beware? Or can teams inquire with the mlb office before proceeding?
MLB and the team are required to inform the other team of a possible ban.
But only if the team knows about it. The CBA does not require players to even notify the team until they’ve exhausted their appeals. There have been a few teams that have been caught off-guard by PED suspensions, sometimes 6 months after the failed test happened.
Julio Franco’s Birth Certificate….
Notification isn’t governed by the CBA, it is dictated by the JDA Section 3 G (page 21).
Parties are notified by the IPA when a failed test occurs, the parties being the MLBPA and MLB. The MLBPA notifies the player and MLB notifies the club.
mlbplayers.com/pdf9/5450924.pdf
I was just about to type what you did! Would MLB tell the trading teams there was a “pending situation?”
I’ve always wondered just how many MLB guys are still taking PEDs. Supposedly, there are labs that continue to make new “designer” PEDs all of the time, which the tests cannot even detect. For a while anyway, until the testing technology catches up to it. By then, the labs have created a new substance and so on, and so forth. It’s an arms race, and with so much money at stake, I bet PED usage is way, way more than the number who are getting popped.
Beckham got busted because he took a Rafael Palmiero/Jose Canseco-era steroid, which has a longstanding-reliable test.
I was thinking the same thing.the tests always catch up to a new substance.
MGF – Mechano Growth Factor
Mariners even suck at cheating…man
LOL!
lol
So this was his third time getting suspended?
There are rules against PEDs, and Tim tried to bend them like Beckham.
Sorry
another rocket scientist that thinks they can beat the system.I for don’t believe the given excuse.they are given lists of banned substances,no matter what it is.all teams make sure they don’t give anything to a player that may end up as a positive on a test..so he can’t read a list of ingredients to make sure he’s good?..I don’t mean read every darn ingredients list but definitely should if you are gonna take a new vitamin or whatever supplement.
And here I thought his slight power surge this year was actually legit…psych!
He went to the Dee Gordon school of baseball improvement.
Let’s just call it the Alex “A-Rod In His Arm” Rodriguez Award.
Is one of the side effects a increased strikeout rate?
Just a serious question here. Since no one is believed when they deny, why wouldn’t a young back up, instead of using themselves, just swap out a regular pain creme with a tainted pain cream with the guy ahead of him on the depth chart? The guy ahead of him would not be believed regardless and he would get the spot. I mean it is obviously a cutthroat thing to do, but people have done worse to succeed.
That could conceivably work with some PED’s but in this case, with Stanozolol, it can only be administered orally or intramuscularly.
Plausible? Maybe… Seek out some PED that can be applied topically, obtain it, find some way to taint something identical to what the target player is using without it being noticeable, swap it surreptitiously, maintain use of tainted product until the player happens to be tested… so on and so forth…
Some fools don’t get the memo’s
Robinson Cano could not be reached for comment.
There’s a reason these guys all have the same defense… they’re obviously all reading off the same notes. The players and those representing them aren’t idiots. When this stuff comes up, they figure the best avenue is to appeal it, lose, and then just split the difference between owning it, and denying everything.
If you get caught cheating, please just own up to it. A few years ago my wife and I were not doing well together and I spent two weeks chatting online with another woman, thinking of possible romance. I quickly “snapped out” of my indescretion thpughts and told my wife about it. Life was hell for weeks. But she now understands my situation, and she loves me more because I told her what I had done rather than continuing until she discovered on her own.
Long story short – has any mlb player come out about PEDs before proof or suspicion? If so, that player(s) would be my hero(s).
A little comical when bad players get caught with PED’s. Like…. come on bro…. at least cheat to be good, don’t cheat just enough to keep you from getting cut
From a “trusted source”? Might want to reconsider who he “trusts”. Take ownership of your mistakes!
