The Tigers announced following today’s game that they’ve designated right-hander Trevor Rosenthal for assignment and optioned righty Eduardo Paredes to Triple-A Toledo. They’ll make a pair of corresponding moves before tomorrow’s game.
Rosenthal’s brief stint with the Tigers went a bit better than his ugly tenure with the Nationals, but a 22.74 ERA and 15 walks in 6 1/3 innings is the lowest of low bars to clear. With the Tigers, Rosenthal yielded seven runs and issued 11 walks against 12 strikeouts. He also hit a batter and uncorked four wild pitches, further exemplifying the disappearance of his ability to locate the ball in his first season back from 2017 Tommy John surgery.
With the Tigers, Rosenthal improved his swinging-strike rate and maintained an outstanding 98 mph average fastball velocity. However, his lack of ability to throw strikes on anything resembling a consistent basis handily outweighed his marginal improvements in Detroit. He’s only allowed 11 hits in his 15 1/3 innings this season and hasn’t surrendered a home run, but Rosenthal’s 2019 season is catastrophic on any level. He’ll surely clear waivers and become a free agent again, at which point he’ll be free to sign on with another organization in hopes of another run at righting the ship.

Rosenthal could use a year with Long Island (or just a majors team willing to give him an extended rehab period in the Minors) to get back on track.
Gettin greedy
Got cubs written all over him.

Throws hard. Can’t find the strike zone. Awful in the bullpen. Dave Dombrowski will be calling soon..

LOL

I see he has to find his command.
nmendoza7
Dude had one slip up yesterday and that’s it for him?
Nick Stevens
Today, he had a line of 0.2 IP. 2 hits. 2 runs. 2 BB. 0K
Steve Adams
Even prior to yesterday’s outing, he’d walked seven batters, hit another, and thrown two wild pitches in eight innings as a Tiger.

O’s pick him up, nothing to lose
Groggydogs
He has about 8,000,000 ways to find his groove. What were the Nationals thinking? And then they had to find away to get under to Cap. Hmmmm.
joedirte4life
He could make a comeback but he needs to go to the minors to reestablish himself
Briffle2
I feel bad for anyone that had to step in against him. He’s throwing 98+ and has no idea where it’s going.
ScottCFA
It was funny watching him heave it to the backstop. Scary for batters, though. “And that one was a liiiittttle outside!”

I think you meant Eduardo Jimenez not Eduardo Paredes
DaddyDimmu
Man im rootin for him. Hope he keeps progressing and gets back to dealin soon!
jdgoat
Sucks to see how far he has fallen off. Matheny butchered do many young arms as their manager.
tigerdoc616
Well, that came a lot quicker than I thought it would. Given the lack of depth the Tigers have in the pen, would have figured Rosenthal would have been given a longer leash.
Ejemp2006
Tigers see he gets velocity by overthrowing. He will not comeback unless he loses speed and learns to pitch. But old dogs and new tricks.
GarryHarris
99 mph is still intriguing..

Travis Demeritte is even a worse defensive RF than Nicholas Castellanos. Its just not fun to watch.
tigerfan4ever
A little quick on the judgement aren’t we? Demeritte has only played what? A week in the majors?
diller1340
And has played RF for a shorter time then Castellanos has….. he’s still learning the position he was a 2B for 4-5 years in the minors. He has shown some position flashes overall

Rosenthal likely won’t be nearly the same until mid-2020,if that soon. He’s 29 or 30,and today hit 100,so hopefully a team will sign him,put him on the 60-day IL which would end his season, bring him to Spring Training, and,if he’s still throwing bullets, send him to the minors, and promote him if he shows the necessary big-league command.Pitching for a Triple-A club like the Tigers certainly hurt his chances of success,as the Bengals reek at ALL aspects of the game .
glodencoverboybrady6636
JDGoat,if what you typed is true, small wonder Matheny isn’t managing and wont ’til he learns how to handle pitchers.
Oxford Karma
He would need to throw about 50 consecutive scoreless innings to get near a 3 ERA.
lfrient1
The Tribe should sign him to a minor league contract. The Indians organization does a great job working with its relievers. Look at their excellent bullpen results this year. All of this coming after not retaining Andrew Miller and Cody Allen following the 2018 season. The names in Cleveland’s bullpen are mostly castoffs who ran into trouble with their previous teams.
Who knows what the 2020 season might bring, so there is no harm trying to work with this guy and perhaps sign him to a minor league deal for next year.

Dodgers need to take a look at him – their “gas can by committee” approach doesn’t work and Rosenthal has to be better than some of the arms they’ve sending out there.
The bullpen keeps on losing leads late in the game but thank God that when this happens at home, the Dodgers have won 10 games with walk-off hits in the bottom of the 9th.
RiseAgainst3598
No homers allowed in almost 15 innings very nice

Does anyone have an example of a pitcher who got the yips and made it all the way back? Dontrell Willis never found the plate and retired because he knew he had no control of a 98 mph FB and was afraid of hurting someone. I don’t see him making it back.
