With this year’s August acquisition period drawing to a close on Saturday, contending teams need to act fast if they want to add players with postseason eligibility to their organizations. Non-contenders may have organizational depth needs to address as well, particularly those that end up parting with veterans before the end of August.
Accordingly, it seemed a worthwhile undertaking to pull together all of the most recently minted free agents with MLB experience — those that have been released in the past month or so. In addition to waiver-wire candidates — Nick Martini and any new additions to the wire that might arise — these are the presently available possibilities. Unlike players that have been waiting on the open market since earlier in the season, most of those listed here have been playing competitively against top-level competition for most or all of the season.

Altherr was already outrighted
Jeff Todd
I have not seen any indication of that, official or otherwise.
DarkSide830
international league transactions page
aromaa
He was on the Syracuse Mets roster last night per MiLB
Jeff Todd
Indeed it is. Odd that they haven’t updated his transactions on MLB.com.
phenomenalajs
Apparently, you removed him from the list. It’s listed on mets.com under roster transactions with yesterday’s date. It is on the line above the announcement of Tejada’s release. I gather Tejada didn’t accept the assignment because he figures he could up with a contender by Saturday to qualify for the postseason. Altherr had no such illusions.
pinstripes17
I thought Rosenthal was with the Yankees?
Jeff Todd
He was reportedly going to sign … still no firm word a week later.
ottomatic
he is with the team, threw a simulated game recently. bottom of this article: nypost.com/2019/08/27/luis-severino-tantalizingly-…
DarkSide830
I would like to see Conlon catch on somewhere. he was striking a few more guys out in the minors this year.
Stu
Nick Kingham
clrrogers 2
He’s not a free agent yet. He’s only been DFA’d. Still has to clear waivers.
Stu
i thought i saw that he was released..
jaysjournal.com/2019/08/27/blue-jays-release-rhp-n…
Jeff Todd
I thought I had checked his player page and not seen a transaction, but now I do see that he has officially been released. Welcome to the list, Nick!
MetsFanaticDanny
Would love to see the Mets sign Scooter Gennett as insurance for Cano & Panik(maybe Chili Davis can unlock something) & David Paulino. How is Paulino still available??? He’s in his mid-20’s and has a world of talent.
andyg37
Chili Davis is terrible.
ScottCFA
Terribly old for a player, but probably a good batting coach for the Mets!
Ejemp2006
Julio Franco
MetsFanaticDanny
@andyg37 You should look up some statistics before making such a dumb comment. The Mets have vastly improved their hitting this season, especially at Citi Field. Their situational hitting has been really good and everyone credits Davis for that.
DarkSide830
he has squeezed a lot out of a relatively unimpressive lineup. (no offense to the players) Better hire then Malee for sure.
Goku the Knowledgable One
Mmmm chili
Metman34
He’s so terrible that Pete Alonso has hit 42 home runs and Jeff McNeil has the highest batting average in the national league in his first season.
MetsFanaticDanny
Mic drop……….
baseballhobo
McNeil has the second highest batting average in the national league.
MetsFanaticDanny
Semantics.
bruce77
And still sitting way behind the Braves
MetsFanaticDanny
That’s okay, the Braves aren’t winning a championship this season anyway. Could care less that they win the division. What’s a division title with no world series championship…………nothing.
Rob66
Who’d be better right now, Chili or Chris Davis? Saying that, it would be a great story if Chris could get back to playing like he used to.
mlb1225
Pretty surprised nobody picked up Gohara when he was on waviers.
weekapaug09 2
100%. It’s an essentially free prospect. One with baggage but still.
DarkSide830
im assuming other teams have shyed away due to Atlanta’s handing of the situation. think of it this way; why woulf Atlanta released him when they could have just outrighted him? sounds like the injury/conditioning issues are more serious then the layman would figure.
Rob66
Ex-Braves pitchers in the last two decades have normally been bad elsewhere too.
DocBB
He’s always been overrated. Career 1.4 WHIP and nearly 4 ERA in minor leagues…and he has a bum shoulder now.
Goku the Knowledgable One
Isn’t he hurt? As in out for season hurt?
DarkSide830
yes
mlb1225
Still though, no risk in claiming him. Lefty who throws upward of 100 with a plus slider.
Frahm_
Gennett would be a great Jose Ramirez fill in.
And isn’t Rosenthal a yankee?
Goku the Knowledgable One
I don’t think he’d be great, but it’s definitely worth a shot as a temp fill in
batty
I think you’re devaluing the word, great.
ohiodevil 2
Jose Ramirez plays 3b, not sure Gennett would help….and the Indians already have a similar player in Kipnis at 2b. I’m interested in seeing what Chang can do at 3b.
Caleb Clark
Jose Bautista, Chase Headley, Jose Reyes, Denard Span, Carlos Gonzalez, Evan Gattis, James Shields, Blake Wood, and AJ Ramos
ReverieDays
The list was of guys who have been playing. None of these guys have been.
Caleb Clark
Well, the list says to list players who have played in the majors, it doesn’t say this year.
Jeff Todd
The title and the post make very clear that I was looking at guys that (a) were released recently and (b) have prior MLB experience.
Caleb Clark
Does that mean I was right?
Banesays
No
Kslaw
and not or
robbiecraig
Not a bad lineup:
1. Eric Young Jr. CF
2. Scooter Gennett 2B
3. Lucas Duda 1B
4. Mark Reynolds DH
5. Trayce Thompson RF
6. Paulo Orlando LF
7. Jung Ho Kang 3B
8. Chris Iannetta C
9. Alcides Escobar SS
😉
ReverieDays
Yes, it’s bad.
deweybelongsinthehall
With Duda and Reynolds in the historical power spots and Gennett in the new key power slot of batting second, might be acceptable top to bottom for the Orioles or Marlins who could finish last with what they already have or with that starting lineup.
DarkSide830
could beat Baltimore
phenomenalajs
A few years ago, maybe. Now, that would be stiff competition for the Tigers.
myaccount
I know you’re being facetious, but that roster could include a rotation of Scherzer, Verlander, deGrom, Cole, and Kershaw and I’d still wonder if they crack .500
marijuasher
Definitely an AL team.
kroeg49
Your team is not as good as the 62 Mets
Caleb Clark
Also, I have some ideas for signings:
RHP David Paulino: BAL because they are trying to rebuild anyway. Why not?
OF Jose Bautista: BAL because they need a veteran outfielder. Plus, he can play 2B and 3B.
2B Scooter Gennett: CLE because of Jose Ramirez’s injury.
LHP Luiz Gohara: LAD because the Dodgers need a left-handed reliever
OF Ben Revere: TB because they need another outfielder out there. Their outfield depth is very thin. Also I think you could see Jhoulys Chacin in TB because their starting pitching is also very thin. If TB can add both of these guys, it could really boost their rotation.
DarkSide830
Gohara is out for the season
Caleb Clark
Anything else you have to say about the rest of my ideas?
DarkSide830
Bautista is done and really cant play the infield. someone should sign Revere but they wolnt. Rest are reasonable.
Caleb Clark
Do you think the MLB can get RHP Josh Lindblom, OF Steven Moya, and 3B Christian Villanueva back?
DarkSide830
Only Lindblom has been good among the three outside of the NPB farm league, so id see him returning if his contract is up. Moya may get an offer or two to go to camp with someone, but given the lack of such interest after his Tigers years ended, id see hi. staying in Japan. meanwhile, Villanueva has been downright terrible. could end up back in Mexico next year due to the likelihood he doesnt get an offer in Japan.
ohiodevil 2
Scooter to Cleveland makes no sense as he plays 2b and Ramirez plays 3b.
Caleb Clark
Why do we drive on parkways and park in driveways?
bravesfan88
Solely to confuse people like you…
Caleb Clark
There are also other left handed relievers that the Dodgers can get. LHP Zach Duke, LHP Tony Sipp, LHP Jorge De La Rosa
marijuasher
Dodgers don’t need LH relievers right now.. Kolarek has been fine. Hill will be a bullpen piece when he comes back.
Caleb Clark
How are RHP Brady Rodgers, RHP Sandy Baez, and RHP David Paulino still available?
DarkSide830
Baez resigned with Detroit
Caleb Clark
What do you all think about the 2020 MLB free agent class? Do you think the Reds have a chance to get either Ozuna or Ryu?
Caleb Clark
Offseason Trade Proposal:
Cardinals: OF Mookie Betts
Red Sox: OF Tyler O’Neill
OF Lane Thomas
RHP Andre Pallante
RHP Alex Reyes
1B Luken Baker
another low-tier prospect
DarkSide830
You’ll need more then a guy with strikeout issues, a 4th OF, someone no one’s ever heard of, a guy who is never healthy, and perhaps the next AJ Reed.
batty
Boston trading Betts would be hard for that fan base to accept, to begin with. Then, trying to reason why the Sox would accept “depth” players over a true replacement would be hard to stomach. Thirdly, Betts is definitely going to test free agency, barring a catastrophe. So the Cards would be in the same spot they are now with Ozuna, but with less roster depth.
rondon
and Betts is gonna get paid a lot more than Ozuna.
Caleb Clark
Do you think Boston will trade JBJ than sign Adam Jones this offseason? It will help lower cap space so they can get JD back.
rangerslegend34107
I’d take a flier on Kingham and Karns.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Pirates should give Kingham another try. Him giving up 8 runs a game shouldn’t be a problem now. It could possibly be an improvement.
Monkey’s Uncle
He certainly wouldn’t do any worse than McRae, or Neveraukas, or Rookie Davis, or Hartlieb, or Yefry Ramirez, or…
You get the idea.
Caleb Clark
Kingham to Detroit makes sense. They need someone who could give the team’s future a head start. There season is practically over, so why not?
macdeezy
7 game series who wins Detroit or these group of waiver wire specials?
Raymn52
Tim Peterson 294 ERA with Syracuse. Not given a chance this year with NY Mets
bravesfan88
Hey very well may he deserving of a shot, but just keep in mind that, a pitcher’s ERA alone doesn’t always tell the whole story…
Raymn52
Whip 096 in 52 innings. He just doesn’t throw 95 . Still has 48 Ks.
Caleb Clark
What about Matt Kemp?
sascoach2003
Looks like an expansion team roster. Lou Brown should be named manager…or, Jim Riggleman, because his name always comes up…
Rob66
Jeff, unless you guys have already done it, how about a piece on what constitutes an “ace” pitcher. Or a chat where we can suggest story ideas we’d like to see?
Sour Bob
This is fantastic. The only thing that would be better would be if it were a regularly updated sidebar item, like the off-season free agent tracker
