The Rays are expected to call up pitcher Trevor Richards to start Sunday’s game against the Tigers, according to a tweet from Juan Toribio of MLB.com (link). Peter Fairbanks was optioned to Triple-A Durham in an accommodating move.
This will be Richards’ first appearance in a Rays uni since being acquired by the club in a deadline deal. A Marlins product who started 45 games for Miami since his debut in 2018, Richards was sent to Tampa along with reliever Nick Anderson in exchange for righty Ryne Stanek and outfielder Jesus Sanchez on July 31st. While Anderson has already appeared in six games for a 72-52 Rays club, Richards has been plying his craft in Triple-A, where he has mostly been working in short spurts (5.1 innings through three minor league appearances).
Perhaps most noted for his past employment as a public school substitute teacher, Richards has been mostly passable as a major league starter thus far in his career–even if free passes have been problematic for the 26-year-old righty. In 238.1 big league innings, Richards has posited a 4.46 ERA and 4.37 FIP. His 10.2% career walk rate sits notably above the 8.3% MLB average.

Very excited to see Richard’s in TB. Already had him stashed in my Roto league and am expecting good things from him. Just look at what they did with Glasnow.
jbigz12
Nothing against Trevor Richards but Tyler Glasnow has tons more upside than Richards. He’s going to be a bulk reliever In TB like Jalen Beeks and Ryan Yarbrough. He could be better than those two but I wouldn’t be expecting any miracles. I hope that was a deep roto league.

Yarbrough isn’t on the opener anymore, with or without it, he’s on an amazing run right now.
jbigz12
Right but only Recently. Historically he’s been their bulk guy and that’s Richards role. My point really had nothing to do w Yarbrough.
bravesfan88
That’s what I was thinking, good lord that has to be an extremely deep league!!!

Richards used to sub for my kids teacher. I wish him all the best but to be honest he sucked at teaching. Something tells me he is gonna suck at baseball too.

Imagine taking the time out of your day to actually type this
thelegendofmike
Well played Moneyman
Cam
Well, he’s got 200+ innings of not sucking already, so you’re a bit late to the party.
Something tells me you couldn’t pick the lottery numbers the day after the draw.

The RAYS don’t play in “Tampa”. Do the Packers play in Green?
sithdude
Yes the Packers play in green! lol. But seriously is just saying “Tampa” offensive or something to Floridians who live in Tampa Bay? I never thought it was an issue, just like saying “Vegas” or “Frisco”.
gibbs58
Thing is, look at a map. Tampa is actually the city’s name, located on Tampa Bay. Green Bay is also the town’s name. So I don’t get the point of the OP.
FSU-Jim
The Tampa Bay Rays do not play in Tampa. They play across Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg. (;my home town ) The intercity rivalry has mellowed over the years, but Tampa still thinks it’s the big brother who gets first pick.. How do you figure a Yankee fan would react to a trade bringing a new player to Manhattan?
gibbs58
Okay, that I know and get. The Giants and Jets don’t play in New York and there are several other teams like that. The Rays aren’t the only ones. Writers just use the city name associated with the team when writing. It happens. I understand the frustration from you though.
FSU-Jim
Call it “Frisco” to someone from San Francisco. See how that works out.
RedFraggle
Not to be a cry baby, but I recall someone saying MLBTR RARELY links to the wrong player in their posts. I see it more often these days (Jesus Sanchez in this case). I understand that sometimes the posts are super rushed to get out, but I hardly think this was breaking news that needed to be hurried or anything.
Michael Chaney
I’m pretty sure it’s an auto-linker, so that’s not on the writers
bobtillman
So the folks in Tampa don’t go to the games….neither do the folks in Tampa Bay……

Our attendance sucks, there is no arguing that. But I am a season ticket holder and I was very pleased to see a decent crowd today for the Tigers. Our concept of a “decent crowd“ probably isn’t very impressive to everyone else, but it was still decent nonetheless. Hoping the playoff push brings out more fans. This has been such a fun year to be a Tampa Bay rays fan. My eight-year-old son is just in love with the team. I’m from Northeast Ohio and when I was a teenager my Cleveland Browns left and moved to Baltimore. I would hate for that to happen to my son, but the writing is kind of on the wall…
