The Padres announced that young left-hander Adrian Morejon has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a shoulder impingement. Southpaw Jose Castillo has been reinstated from the 60-day IL to take Morejon’s spot on the active roster.
It’s been a rough beginning to Morejon’s big league career, as he has been tagged for a 10.13 ERA over his eight innings of work (five outings) since making his Major League debut back on July 21. There were a couple of silver linings to Morejon’s first taste of the Show, as he averaged 96.4mph on his fastball and recorded nine strikeouts over his eight frames. MLB.com and Baseball America ranked Morejon within the top 50 of their midseason prospects rankings, making him one of the many intriguing youngsters coming out of the loaded San Diego farm system.
Castillo didn’t have nearly the same prospect pedigree when he made his Major League debut for the Padres last season, though the southpaw had much better early results. He posted a 3.29 ERA, 4.33 K/BB, and 12.2 K/9 over 38 1/3 relief innings for San Diego in 2018, though a flexor strain has kept him on the sidelines for all of 2019.

Let Morejon sit until September.
DarkSide830
next time dont rush your top prospects.
Padres458
How was he rushed? Also Fangraphs dont have him in the top 100.
DarkSide830
when does a 4.25 ERA in AA say you are ready. and I wouldn’t look at one source to say a guy is not a top prospect. if you are a Padres fan, you would know he is.
zippytms
Take a look at his game logs. He gave up five earned runs in his first two games. Since then he held a 2.57 ERA and batters hit .206/.268/.314 against him through 28 innings across 14 games. He was pitching well. We don’t know the reasons for the early call, but to say that he was “rushed” is disingenuous.
Koamalu
“MLB.com and Baseball America ranked Morejon within the top 50 of their midseason prospects rankings.” That would mean he is a top prospect. He is also the youngest player in the National League.
BBB
Morejon is #46 on the BA midseason list, #87 on MLB.com.

I’m sure it’s a “real” injury.
And promoting a prospect doesn’t increase the possibility of an injury.
Chicks Dig the Longball
Why would a team put a prospect on the IL if it was a phantom injury? He will now accrue service time and not even be helping the team. Would have made more sense just to demote him, so it must be a real injury.
Koamalu
Ok Ryan. Most people would say it makes more sense to have someone that talented in the majors learning from the Padres pitching coach and the guys who have already stuck in the majors even if he is “injured”.
Chicks Dig the Longball
Who is Ryan?
lowtalker1
Ok “Burns”

Yes, everyone knows Koamalu is Richard Burns from Friarhood.
But sticking to the point of this thread, the phantom IL is for players who are out of options or have over 5 years of service time so they can’t be sent down without their consent. If the Padres didn’t want Morejon on the major league roster they could have just optioned him to AAA.

So with this IL move, the Pads will be getting Lessjon?
I’m here all week. Good night and don’t forget to tip your bartender and your waitress.
