The Padres are likely to place phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. on the injured list because of back spasms, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. Tatis departed Tuesday’s game because of the issue and then sat out Wednesday.
This will be the second IL stint of the season for Tatis, a 20-year-old rookie shortstop who has been among the majors’ best players – first year or otherwise – in 2019. Although he missed a month earlier in the season with a hamstring strain, Tatis has still managed to slash an excellent .317/.379/.590 (149 wRC+) with 22 home runs, 16 steals and 3.7 fWAR across 372 plate appearances. Tatis may join Mets first baseman Pete Alonso as the leading NL Rookie of the Year vote-getters at season’s end, though having a pair of IL trips under his belt could help prevent the Padre from winning the award.
Regardless of whether he takes home any hardware this year, Tatis has the talent to end up in the running for plenty of accolades in the future. With that in mind, the Padres will surely be cautious with Tatis as he works his way back from this injury – especially considering they’re all but out of playoff contention. However, the club is hopeful he’ll be able to return after 10 days off, according to Acee.

Drats! Really want Tatis to stay healthy and win ROY.
I hope in his stead, the Padres call up Ty France to play 2b while Jose Urias slides over to SS. France has been playing some 2b in El Paso, and Urias started at SS today. Ty France is tearing up AAA, hitting over .400. He is already 25. I would love to undo the Hosmer deal and have France play 1b. This would have been great for 2020:
C: Mejia, Hedges
1b: France
2b: Urias
SS: Tatis
3b: Machado
OF: Myers, Margot, Renfroe
If Hosmer weren’t here, the Padres probably don’t trade Franmil Reyes, and go with a 5 man rotation in the OF and 1b with Reyes, Myers, Margot, Renfroe, and France, with France also filling in at 3b. But nooooooooooooo
stpbaseball
France underwhelmed in the bigs to start the season. not exactly exciting ped
nowheretogobutup
Reyes had to go no D and your line up doesn’t exactly send shivers up an opposing pitcher. With Hedges, France, Urias, Myers you have four guys who can’t hit their weight all; EZ outs. Unless they turn things around they’ll never make the playoffs.not in 2020 or 2021.
nowheretogobutup
Is there one player in that lineup who is hitting close to .300, aaaa Nope. And .270 is not close to .300. I can’t count Mejia not enough AB’s.
truthlemonade
Tatis is hitting .315, but he is clearly going to the IL again. Hosmer is hitting .287. And he is not in my lineup because all the rest of them with higher BA are still just plain better hitters. I think that Mejia, France, and Urias deserve longer looks in the majors. And Myers can turn it around.
VegasSDfan
Mejia sure started to hit
Koamalu
IF they were better hitters, they would be hitting better than Hosmer.
VegasSDfan
Hosmer, duhhh

Who’s Jose Urias?

Back spasms at 20? Yikes
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Lower back strains are a young man’s troubles. I was plagued with a bad back, lower back, in my twenties. I guess you learn how to manage your back and be smart as you get older?
Haven’t had problems since, knock on wood. Best stretch is the Chinese rice eating position, almost like a catcher, except the big key is your heels are on the ground, and shoulders between the knees. Saved my basketball career.

Start doing yoga stretches buy a DVD and do them it really made a difference for me

After he made a amazing leap catch and then fouled off a ball.

Tatis for young guy has missed a lot of time. He missed time last year sliding headfirst and this year stretching for throw and now this.
nowheretogobutup
That’s because hTatis is giving it 110% if they all did they’d be close to first instead of last place. Green also needs to give him off a day here and there.
nowheretogobutup
There’s no reason to bring him back early, were doomed for last again. I say rest him for three weeks and bring him back then. Why rush the kid.
Koamalu
He went on the DL the last time doing the splits.
nowheretogobutup
One thing Green doesn’t do is give his players a day off. I’ve seen how Tatis gives it 110 percent every game how about giving the guy a day off here or there. Same thing with Machado. Our former Mgr Bochy had a great format for resting a player to give them an extra day here or there. I blame Green 100% for this injury. I kept saying rest Tatis never happened.

Noooo! He’s been a beast for me in fantasy this year! He’s one of my many young guns (Alonso, Acuña, Aquino) saving my season this year.
Wolverines2
We will all say a prayer for your fantasy team.

Just a reminder to laugh at the fact that the White Sox gave him to the Padres for two and a half bad seasons of James Shields.

Didn’t the Blue Jays give up Thor for a mediocre 38 year old knuckle-baller?

That happened to win a Cy Young. Sandy Alderson sold high on him. Ironically with both trades, the selling team had the opportunity to bring back the former star pitcher years later. R.A. Dickey still wanted to continue his career last but he wanted to find an offer within either driving distance or a short flight distance of his home in Nashville. Direct flights from NYC would’ve helped, though I think he was looking more seriously at Cincy and Atlanta.
As for the Friars, James Shields still has his home in San Diego and he was making it clear he was open for a return. Pads weren’t biting though.

I do not know why Brian Reynolds does not get more attention as a ROY candidate.
He is among the leaders in many hitting categories and is a good outfielder who is capable of playing a decent centerfield.
He is not a great power hitter but he has his share of home runs.
Could it be that he is not playing in NY?
truthlemonade
That’s a legit gripe. Hitting an NL leading .338, with the same WAR as Tatis and Alonso.
Mendoza Line 215
As of today he was leading the ML in batting average.
The last time a NL Rookie did that was, well, never.

Thank you Gary.Seems comprehensive and accurate to me.
To me this shows the ML attention to young cheap players versus expensive thirty something veterans.
Gobbysteiner
Agree with everything except walker being above Yordan
GarryHarris
The order changes monthly. Especially RPs. Yordan Alvarez and Aristide Aquino are climbing fast. PIT LF Bryan Reynolds and SS Kevin Newman are having great seasons but relatively unknown in the Baseball world.
Many rookies aren’t listed because there are so many rookies, I’m just listing the top of the list. Some get sent down like Myles Straw and Kelvin Gutierrez and some aren’t in the top ten like Griffin Canning and Trent Thornton.
mrpadre19
You missed Luis Urias at 2b
GarryHarris
Luis Urias is a rookie but not a top 5 2B due to his .170 BA.
nowheretogobutup
Urias needs to at least hit his weight for average if he wants to stay in the Bigs, he has D plus needs at least a .240 BA or the EP boys will see him again
SanDiegoTom
Looks at his August numbers, he’s adjusting well.
bobtillman
Agree re: Reynolds. But Tatis is a “happening”; I haven’t seen that kind of electricity since Lindor was a young-un. A face-of-the franchise, impact player…and a short stop (and a good one) to boot….
Mendoza Line 215
Bob-Tatis scored on an infield pop up earlier this year against the Pirates.
I was impressed, and I have seen a lot of players as I remember you when you were playing for the Red Sox.
phenomenalajs
The “Face of the Franchise” moniker could also be applied to “Polar Bear” Pete Alonso. He and McNeil have really breathed life into the Mets’ team this year. Pete’s going to have to return to his homerun barrage to edge out Tatis for NL ROY. He had the opportunity to complete the Mets’ comeback last night with a grand slam, but narrowly avoided hitting into a double play thanks to Camargo’s error. (I see why Braves’ fans are praying for Swanson’s return.) Pete’s going to need to seize those opportunities to be ROY.
sherlock_
Is this from his crazy jump catch or unrelated?
Show Me Your Tatis
He’d be an All Star if he could ever stay healthy.

It was inevitable that some overweight barstool superfan would spew the predictable, inane “made of glass” cliche.
Show Me Your Tatis
He has had two injuries in the past fiscal year that required IL stints lasting more than a month each. We’ll see about this one.
nowheretogobutup
There’s no need to rush him back, were a good last place team. Too many non hitters on the line up, that has to change in 2020 or that will be another last place 2020. You can’t have Urias, Hedges, Margot, Myers. SP that’s five easy outs only the Padres would keep these guys in the line up.
Show Me Your Tatis
Urias and Margot sure haven’t been easy outs this month
nowheretogobutup
One month does not make a career or a year in general. When Urias is hitting above .250 I’ll start listening, until then no buenos.
nowheretogobutup
Why does he have injuries? because he is crazy on the base paths and loves the game, who else give 200% on the Friars?
Show Me Your Tatis
Only one of those injuries was sustained on the basepaths. Two, maybe three significant in a year is bad.
nowheretogobutup
He just gives too much every game and Green needs to rest him with days off here and there.
nowheretogobutup
I say rest him and only play him every third day till the season is over were good for last place what’s the big deal, save this kid for next season when hopefully AJ can bring in two good SP’s No. 1 and No.2 in the rotation.. Unless AJ trades half the team for two SP’s then were in trouble again.
