With nothing on the line in terms of results, the Orioles are looking firmly to the future. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy for the club to simply bring up a wave of prospects in September.
GM Mike Elias explains to Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun that the team is indeed planning to start bringing in fresh faces. “We will start to see a lot of players from our quote-unquote ’prospect list’ on the big league team here in the next month, and early next season,” he says.
But that doesn’t mean the roster situation is straightforward. Even for “the guys that are on the roster already,” says Elias, “it would be inaccurate to say that doesn’t matter, because when you add somebody to the roster, you typically have to take somebody off. That’s a big decision.” While September’s expanded active roster will help, there’ll still be tough 40-man calls to be made.
Beyond the question of maintaining control rights, the club simply needs to fill innings. While some of the players currently holding down active roster spots may well end up being cut loose in the offseason, they’re needed now to avoid over-taxing or otherwise harming the development of young hurlers.
Plus, there are developmental and health considerations to account for. Take Austin Hays, whose own late-2017 promotion serves as something of a cautionary tale. As Meoli further explores, the club has seen some signs of a rebound from the 24-year-old, though it’s still not clear that he’d benefit from an extension of his season after working through health problems.
Elias opened the door in particular to calling up players who are due to occupy 40-man spots in the offseason to come, noting that the organization has “several guys who are amongst our top prospects who will need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this year.” Such players can be added now in order to get a taste of the majors, though that means giving them service time and perhaps forcing some early decisions on other players.
One such player is intriguing first base/outfield prospect Ryan Mountcastle. As Meoli notes, Mountcastle has shown well this year but also still has some areas to work on at Triple-A. The 22-year-old’s .308/.340/.528 slash line is outwardly impressive, but it’s just 16% above league average (116 wRC+) in the hitter-friendly International League. With a meager 4.2% walk rate, Mountcastle has been dependent upon an unsustainable .363 batting average on balls in play for his productivity. He’s also still working to land on a defensive home.
That’s certainly not to say that there isn’t any promise. The former first-rounder has long been viewed as a talented player and there’s every reason for the O’s to give him a full shot at the big leagues in the near future. Much the same holds for Hays. Trouble is, the club is already giving showcases to Anthony Santander and DJ Stewart. And it could stand to give further opportunities to Cedric Mullins and Dwight Smith Jr. Ultimately, there are only so many plate appearances to go around.
The bottom line is that the roster finagling is more complicated for the rebuilding Baltimore organization than might be anticipated at first glance. The club can and will continue to provide chances to interesting players, but it’ll already be forced to make some committing choices in the coming weeks.

Could this be the time they move on from Chris Davis?
throwinched10
They will probably cut ties with him in the off-season unless they feel he can bounce back and bring a return at the deadline next year.
Pops
I’d say its about time. I don’t think he’s going to pull an Andrew Luck…but he should, just to save face.
But because he won’t…I certainly hope they cut ties with Davis.
oriole
Unfortunately Davis is going nowhere. He’ll be on the team at least one more year, probably more.

Cody Carroll hasn’t thrown a pitch all year yet still is occupying a 40 man slot, With him, Peterson, and Davis… There’s 3 40 man spots right there. Mountcastle, Bostick, and Akin.
jbigz12
Cody Carroll isn’t taking a 40 man slot he’s on the 60 day DL. I’d also keep him over a few arms in our system. David Hess, Luis Ortiz, and Tom Eshelman come to mind. We shouldn’t have a hard time clearing out spots when we need to. There’s a lot of junk on there.
Mountcastle doesn’t really have to come up for me. He doesn’t have a defensive position and his approach at the plate leaves a lot to be desired. There’s really no place for him w Mancini and Nunez taking the 1b/Dh reps. I don’t want to see Trey in the outfield. Hays hasn’t deserved a call up either. He’s on the 40 man and is CF capable though. I’d be more inclined to roll w him if you put a gun to my head and I had to pick but I have no issues w keeping both down.

Actually Carroll is on the 40 man roster. Go ahead and take a look, has been all year. So confusing for me considering they gave up on some players earlier than they had to. You may be thinking of Josh Rogers, he is on the 60 day IL.
jbigz12
You’re right about that but I disagree on giving up on anyone worse. Jimmy Yack, Straily, Hart, Lucas and the like all deserved to go. I think Carroll has more upside than all of them. He has been hurt all this year while not on the 60 day IL.
Carroll throws 97 and has options next season. I’d keep him over Eshelman, Ortiz or Hess any day of the week as well. Plus an out of options filler like Ynoa or Brooks as well. Don’t think he’s worse than the Phillips or Tayler Scott level either.
Long story short there’s a lot of fringe arms down there and I don’t have a problem not giving up on the injured guy who throws 97.

I agree all the names you mentioned are bad but it’s puzzling why this year he was not placed on the 60 day IL to accommodate another player and to take a chance on them. Rickard comes to mind, as well as Yaz… of all the players DFAd this year they could have claimed anyone while transferring Carroll to the 60 day IL. Idk it’s just puzzling to me
jbigz12
He wasn’t eligible to be placed on the 60 man IL because he was in AAA. I hadn’t noticed that previously but that’s the reason. Yastrzemski sucked for years and was old. He wasn’t protected twice by Duquette and was left alone. I’m not mad about losing him. Thats just baseball. Richard had a billion opportunities here and never proved to be worth his salt either. Though I had been rooting for him for a long time.
The more questionable thing for me is why we have not given Mason Williams a chance to play in the big leagues. I’d DFA Jace Peterson and give a legitimate defensive OF like Williams a shot.

Call up Mountcastle and see what he can do! End of story
jeffk-2
Agreed. If he does well, send Davis packing.
DarkSide830
might as well call up Mountcastle. the difference between him and hayes is Mountcastle is in AAA as opposed to AA. no reason to call up a guy in September from AA unless you’re a contender in need or the guy will clearly benefit from it.
BaseballBrian
Hays has been in AAA for several weeks.
jbigz12
Hays has 229 PA’s in AAA. He’s been up far more than a few weeks. It’s been a couple months but you were much closer than Darkstar.
To claim the only difference between Hays and Mountcastle was AA and AAA was a completely ignorant statement even if the level differences were true. Hays is a solid defending outfielder who needs to work on his approach. Hays is also already on the 40 man also so there’s really nothing at all accurate about what Darkstar said.
DarkSide830
i was comparing Hays in 2017 to Mountcastle in 2019, as the article is. Hays spent 2017 at A+ and AA before he was promoted to the Majors.

I want to see smith jr get back to his early season form. I hope he gets another chance
jbigz12
I don’t. Rather see Dj and Santander get a shot. Smith Jr. is a bad defensive outfielder who might be able to hit around league average. There’s really nothing exciting about that. Stewart is probably no better but I’d give him a longer look. His defense could be better than Smith’s and I think his approach at the plate is more conducive to success. Though like I said I really don’t expect either one to be a ML starter.
yankees500
Wrong D.J. Stewart haha.
the kutch
Oh…The Orioles have too many good players…Got it…
sufferforsnakes
Does it really matter?
Pops
I’d like to see Mountcastle and Hays promoted. And in the off season a trade or two for either better starting pitching or more 17 year old prospects for Elias’s talent pipeline.
