Here are Thursday’s minor moves from around the game…
Latest Moves
- The Marlins announced that infielder Yadiel Rivera cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A, after he was designated for assignment on Tuesday. Rivera has seen action in each of the last five MLB seasons, but doesn’t have much to show for it at the plate, including a .183/.258/.217 slash line in 66 PA for Miami in 2019.

- The Reds announced that infielder Blake Trahan has been outrighted to Triple-A Louisville after clearing waivers. Trahan was designated for assignment earlier this week. The 25-year-old has spent much of his season at Louisville already, hitting only .230/.280/.324 over 323 plate appearances, continuing Trahan’s struggles at the plate during his five-year pro career (which included 11 games for the Reds at the big league level in 2018).
- The Royals released 23-year-old first baseman Samir Duenez from their Triple-A club, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports (via Twitter). Duenez ranked as Kansas City’s No. 13 prospect, per Baseball America, as recently as the 2017-18 offseason. However, he’s endured a miserable season at the plate in 2019, batting a combined .199/.261/.307 in 361 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A. BA’s 2017-18 report on him tabbed him as a potential “impact power bat” with average glovework at first base and below-average speed. That outlook has clearly become more clouded with Duenez’s recent struggles, though as a 23-year-old who posted solid Double-A numbers in 2018 (when he was still rather young for the Texas League), he’ll likely find another opportunity elsewhere.

im sure Chunichi or KT is calling already
Yankeedynasty
Mets. He can platoon with Tebow in AAA
allweatherfan
Surprised they gave up on him.
Cardsfanatik redux
He’ll probably go to the somewhere else and hit 700 HR’s.
GareBear
Why? They aren’t competitive and he isn’t blocking anyone.

As a Royals fan, I think there’s more to it. He’s been a decent hitter. Maybe it’s a character or effort issue. Kids from AA up are getting a shot. I’m tired of seeing the Royals hold onto players forever. They have tons of guys below AA performing at a high level. They need to promote them and quit holding onto guys in AA and AAA who will not make an impact. They need to speed up the development process so the major league team is re-stocked soon. IE Nick Heath, Jackson Kowar, Dan Tillo, and Brady Singer. Lots of guys are going to disappear soon. Just watch.

Samir Duenez was actually on the 40 man as recently as 2017. I think they had selected him to protect him in 2016 from the rule 5 draft. in fact, in 2017 I was wondering why he never got a call up….But they took him off the 40 man last year after the ‘18 season.

Seriously, who is it you feel like we’re keeping instead of Duenez that we shouldn’t be? He’s hitting .167 in AA, not exactly knocking down the door.
We grabbed him from the independent league. He’s a slow, power hitting first basemen with questionable hit and glove tools that we grabbed out of the independent league. He’s Frank Schwindel lite. There’s plenty of legitimate complaints about Royals personnel decisions, but getting upset about Samir Duenez is just looking for something to whine about.

I am surprised the Cubs didn’t claim that guy, if they did he would be rated as their number 1 prospect. “The Cubs minor league system is the weakest in history” – MLB writers

its probably not even the worst right now, but okay
clrrogers 2
True. Milwaukee’s is worse.

i was thinking Giants, given most of their prospects are overrated, but they ahve Bart and took Dubon right out of a milwaukee system that also lost Keston, so perhaps that’s the case. then again, i think Milwaukee has a lot more sleeper prospects then both Chicago and San Fran.

You know, the name “Blake Trahan” could lead to some confusion. What were his parents thinking?
