After storming back into the playoff picture after the trade deadline, the Mets took a tough loss against the lowly Royals last night. Coming off a series loss to the first-place Braves, the Mets remain two games out of playoff position. Their aggressiveness at the trade deadline prompted reactions ranging from surprise to accusations of front office overreach, and while they’ve already done enough to quell the harshest critics, they’ll likely need to up their game one more level to leapfrog a still-muddy field of contenders that includes the Phillies and the runners-up from the Central. As the Mets look to reset and charge again at the Royals in Kansas City, let’s check in on a couple of injury updates…
- First-time regular J.D. Davis was removed from yesterday’s game with right calf tightness, but it was a preventative move and the Mets do not anticipate Davis to miss any time, tweets Newsday’s Tim Healey. Acquired from the Astros this offseason, Davis has taken advantage of the opportunity in New York, making himself an indispensable part of Mickey Callaway’s everyday players. While starting 31 games at third and 47 in left, Davis has stroked for a line of .311/.374/.514 with 14 home runs and a healthy .203 ISO. His bat does the heavy lifting, as metrics don’t look favorably upon his defensive contributions at either third (-9 DRS, -5.4 UZR/150) or left field (-6 DRS, -14.8 UZR/150).
- In a full piece, Healey notes that reliever Robert Gsellman has been unavailable out of the pen for the past couple of days because of sore triceps. No word was given as to whether Gsellman would be available today, though the implication is he’ll avoid the injured list. With Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz both giving up big hits this week, Gsellman’s return to health will give Callaway another option with high-leverage experience. The 26-year-old has 14 saves and 22 holds between this year and last, but his record is hardly spotless. He’s registered 10 blown saves over that same span. For the year, he’s been called upon 52 times for 63 2/3 innings with a 4.66 ERA/4.13 FIP/4.67 xFIP.

i dont think JD is a rookie he had over 130 at bats prior to this season, i could be wrong tho
dylan1g
He’s not a rookie most likely cause he was called up first in 2017, I believe.
24TheKid
It doesn’t what year someone is called up, just how many at bats, innings pitched, or days on the active 25 man roster.
mfm420
it sorta does. the other way to lose status is to be up on the 25 man roster for 45 days pre sept 1st. looks like davis was last year, hence why he doesn’t qualify for rookie status now).
he had 79 days of service time last season, looks like he got around 50 of them pre sept 1st, so his rookie status went away.
shame, could have gotten a few votes had he been eligible this year
Dutch Vander Linde
In his bio it says he exceded his rookie limit during the 2018 season.
BrandonGregory74
He didn’t get many at bats in Houston. I thought he would be a solid pro. Glad to see I was right for once.
RoyalsFanAmongWolves
lowly royals? just because we’re 35 games under 500?
we beat syndergaard fair & square
DarkSide830
he of the ERA near 4?

Hey Royals fan-NY fans are hoping that your boys sweep. The Mets would have been better off selling players, tanking and starting over. What their fans have now it false hope followed by disappointment. That’s the “Mets’ Way” and will continue as long as the cheapskate owners are involved

The Wilsons are a classy group. They paid homage to Write and constantly put a playoff team on the field. Remember 2015
fits65
Classy? They first tried to get David to retire before the contract was over. Though it was insured they could have saved a few bucks, and in typical Wilpon style they whispered so to their shills like Joel Sherman to see if embarrassment would bait Wright.
Speaking of 2015, they used the same back door press shaming to embarrass Dark Knight to disregard his medical advice on an innings limit after surgery. With public pressure he caved and he was never the same pitcher.
And Kranz, since 2015 how have the Mets done in the playoffs? Perhaps continual disappointment has caused you to spin downward into deep denial, however nobody cares about the years since, nor 2015 which was an “almost year”.

The two aren’t mutually exclusive. The Royals are a terrible baseball team. They also beat Syndergaard fair and square.

At least the Royals are a small market team trying to make the best with limited resources.
The Mets are a large marker team spending like a small market team over the past dozen years. Never investing consistently, their spending has been based upon irrational thought; only when there is great pressure do they dip into their coffers and in those instances they piss their money away with signings like Cespedes and trades like Robbie Cano.
The Wilpon’s pray for injuries so that they can make insurance claims. They only care to invest to the extent that they can manipulate their fans to buy tickets.
Beaten into depression that is renewed annually, their fans are either illusionary or dillusionary.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Royals (their fans are so nice!) but even a blind dog can find the food bowl once in a while…..
DarkSide830
Davis isnt a rookie anymore
TradeAcuna
Glad he is okay. Tired of hearing injuries are the reason the Mets lose.
No, they are just bad.
At least, they get to laugh at the Braves eventual 2019 collapse.
fits65
The last laugh is in the Mets fans as they are being abused by the incompetent and cheap Wilpon’s. Until they sell the team there is no hope. They invest just enough to sucker their fans to buy tickets.
TradeAcuna
Fair enough. I have zero hope the Braves will ever win a postseason game again with ownership and AA. Let’s enjoy the Nats WS run though and hopefully, they beat the overachieving Dodgers.

Who is saying injuries are the reason they are losing? Lol
They’ve had just about the fewest injuries in baseball.
If Mets fans want to see what injuries are, tell them to take a look across town at the Spankees and get back to you.
Fact is, they are lucky to even have a chance.
It’s such a horribly constructed team with no depth at all.
TradeAcuna
I’m referring to the last few years.
Boogaloo
Yeah, they always have an excuse. If they start losing now they’ll claim it’s because they lost the GOAT Jeff mcneil
VonPurpleHayes
Yankees and Phillies have had the most active players on the IL this year by quite a bit. It’s amazing both are still in the playoff race. It’s even more amazing that the Yankees are likely going to win their division.
fits65
Cough, Purple. Let’s clarify. The Yankees have the best record in the AL and every few days switch places with the Dodgers for the best record in the MLB.
This is without their number one starter, their number one reliever, their number one home run hitter, and at least 50 games missed by their right fielder, center fielder short stop and catcher.
So the the Mets whiners, the Yankees have depth. Laying a slice of Swiss cheese their bench the team is weak, as is the pathetic bullpen, porous defense, and bare minor league system.
Otherwise the Wilpon’s are happy. They have acquired a few important Dodgers memorabilia pieces as Fred’s buddy Sandy Koufax stays on their payroll.
VonPurpleHayes
I’m no Braves fan, but that team is talented and will be for years to come. I don’t see a collapse in their future. Outside of the Dodgers, they are better than everyone else in the NL.

Any bad news involving the Mets cheers me up. Thanks, MLBTR!

Well Buck, for the next six weeks you will be in a cheery mood as each day’s events will contribute to a slide and with that Chitifield will be dark when the regular season ends.
