Dodgers lefty Julio Urias has been suspended 20 games under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse policy, MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick reports. Per Jorge Castillo of the LA Times, the suspension includes the five games Urias served while on administrative leave. Urias will not appeal the decision and will be eligible for postseason play.
The 22-year-old Urias was arrested May 13 in Los Angeles after eyewitnesses and video reports showed the hurler “shoving a female companion to the ground.” He was placed on administrative leave the following day, during which time he missed the five aforementioned contests.
The former top prospect has enjoyed a solid 2019 campaign – mostly in a long relief role – after returning late last season from a gruesome shoulder injury that sidelined him for nearly 15 months. In 67 2/3 IP this season, the lefty’s posted a 2.53 ERA/3.59 FIP with an 8.91 K/9 against 3.06 walks per nine.
The Dodgers’ public statement on the matter reads as follows:
“While we are disappointed in what occurred and support the decision by the Commissioner’s Office, we are also encouraged that Julio has taken responsibility for his actions and believe he will take the necessary steps to learn from this incident.”
Is this for the 2nd time?
I imagine this is in regards to that same incident. He was never punished for that.
doesn’t matter, he’ll be back well before the playoffs
He’s a scumbag he should never play another game again
And why’s that?
Because like MLB he is the judge, jury and executioner
Because there were witnesses and video of the incident. There is no reason for that behavior anytime, any job, any country…no way.
So you want the man executed or what? No one defended his behavior, he himself included apparently.
Who the heck is talking about execution? He probably just doesn’t want him to play baseball.
Guy is going to be eligible for the postseason. So, you can be suspended for the first-time ever with a banned substance and not be eligible for the postseason, but this guy can toss around female companion on video and still play on MLB’s biggest stage. Not sure how I feel about it, but that doesn’t sound right to me.
Welcome to America. Steroids enrage Bob Sportsfan because he didn’t make his college team as a walk-on, playing the game The Right Way. Whereas domestic violence is a hoax perpetrated by lib cucks.
Seriously, if fans complained about wifebeaters as much as “A-Roid,” the penalties would align with morality.
Thank you these fools are also Trump supporters guaranteed Just don’t care about anyone besides themselves Doesnt matter what they did as long as he will be back to help my team win JMO but I wouldback itbwi h as wager lol
Sickening
Punctuation is your friend.
Serious? I hope that he learns from his mistakes and grows as a person from them.
Agreed.
Cause youre Dodger fans and Urias is good. Otherwise….
You a fan of the Cubs or Sox? Cause if you’re a Cub fan I’m assuming you say the same about Addison Russell
Or aroldis who was on their team for the ws win
Nah I’m a Sox fan, I actually was messing around because every time there is a domestic violence suspension someone who is a fan of their competition says that. Like Russel and Chapman and Ozuna he served his suspension let’s move on
Nah I’m a Sox fan I’m just messing around cause every time there is a domestic violence suspension a fan from the competition says that. If he serves his suspension he deserves a second chance. Same with Chapman, Russel, ozuna and whoever else has been suspended
Serious? I hope that he learns from his mistakes and grows as a person.
So if I punched my wife one time I should have lost my entire job and career?
I see the Dodger manager is thinking about just using his bullpen against the Braves Sunday…. no respect for the Braves.
Heavens no, every one gets a second chance in America. The first punch is free as long as you just say you’re sorry and will grow from this experience. Sad part is most women believe that load of crap and later get really hurt and or killed.
Why would you hit your wife even one time, Ironman? If you’re arrested with evidence, yeah, you should be fired from your job if your boss wants to.
MLB doesn’t stand for this behavior.
Any puke that hits women is no man.
I hope every woman boos him when he comes back.
Snit’s already beat ’em to the punch: Duvall, Hechavarria, Flowers — that’s a cast of waiver-wire retreads in any other circumstances. No respect for the Dodgers.
So for a “push”, which could’ve been the cause of heels or him trying to stop her from leaving or walking away, you want him to be banned from MLB? Have to seen the evidence yourself? Police didn’t even bother to charge him with anything. If his crime was so egregious, wouldn’t it be an open and shut case with video evidence? People like you overreacting to a lover’s quarrel with a moral high horse irritate me. He made a mistake. He’s serving 20 games, why should every woman boo him and he be banned from the league?
He was jumped from behind. Didn’t think. Yeah he grows from this.
This was covered. Smeels political
Ironicman – Yes! you start over. You do not hit women!
Punched? My gawd dude?
Look further you got it!
Ray Rice did. just sayin.
LADreamin: He avoided being criminally charged only because he agreed to a 52 week DV counseling program and only if he “commits no acts of violence against anyone.” And that’s with the woman refusing to cooperate as is the case with many victims. See Russell’s case where it came to light long before his wife agreed to come forward.
Sadly, most who hit, it’s rarely the first time and more than likely the last time.
See that’s where the disconnect is. You’re grouping him with habitual woman beaters when it could’ve been just an isolated incident. We. Do. Not. Know. The. Whole. Story. Stop assuming. That’s how things get misconstrued. If the video comes out and he completely Ray Riced her, then I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Until then, I’m reserving judgement. I’m sure Russell and Rice would’ve agreed to 52 weeks of therapy too, but it was way past that for them.
Chicago fan really you had a guy who did a lot worse.
Jesus you guys can’t read, for one I’m a Sox fan ( there are two teams in Chicago believe it or not) and for two I said I was kidding I’m cool with him after he serves his suspension. And to boot I am fine with Russel after he served his time and is taking steps to better himself. My father was incarcerated for attempted robbery and he reformed himself and had a family. We all deserve a second chance
In my opinion if the incident isn’t baseball related, let the kids play
lol at chicago fan who cheers for russell and im sure had no beefs with chapman. what a joke of a fan
Read above dude, Sox fan and I was kidding.
Also no beef with Chapman Russel or ozuna. Everyone forgets him
Please tell me that this is sarcasm.
He is eligible for reinstatement on September 2. The article would have been clearer if it included that fact.
I thought a suspension doesn’t allow him to play in the postseason!!
PEDs prevent postseason play.
Substance Abuse suspensions don’t. The others do.
Makes a lot of sense, abuse a drug in your own body you miss the postseason. Abuse someone else’s body by intentionality hurting them you get to play.
i think if your convicted you should, but otherwise you should be able to play, for example, there really isnt any proof Urias did anything here, so it wouldn’t be just to thr player or the team to do that.
Its actually common sense for those who aren’t the moral police. PEDs are an attempt to enhance your game and thus cheat to make your club better. It makes sense they cant come back for October. Violence has all kinds of diffrent circumstances and simply suspending them all for October would be ridiculous. You cant keep guys out of the postseason for incidents that often get thrown out in court.
chalk1973 – I feel like were living in crazytimes all the time, no logic allowed…
If you are taking peds, you are cheating the game and possibly changing the outcome of games. No postseason is fair. If they want to take away the postseason for any off-field suspension, I’m okay with that.
We sure are. Video of him pushing a women to the ground and people act if that is ok. I’m sorry but at my place of employment I have to see the ugly side of abuse and the damage it causes to women and children. And most of the time the abuser gets away with it.
The Dodgers always seem to have all the Creeps
Weird last time I checked Russell and Chapman don’t play for them.
What are you talking about
They possibly cost themselves a world series title when they negated the Chapman trade. No leg to stand on
MLB is doing its best to keep up with NFL….on the Transaction Wire, we have Trades, Waivers, and Arrests……
OTOH, at least they’re doing something….
Why couldn’t they have done this before last night … ?
Why does MLB suspend players longer when they violate banned substance policy? That’s ridiculous.
Because PEDs are related to and affect the integrity of the game. Domestic violence incidents are off-field issues.
Domestic abusers affect the integrity of the game as well.
No it doesn’t. It affects the integrity of the players playing the game (and potentially the league by proxy), but it doesn’t affect the integrity of the game in a sense that PEDs is cheating.
Do you feel good finding a way to defend domestic violence not being harsh enough? Why on earth would you actually argue this?
And yes, the HOF has a moral factor, and all players are raised with the notion that players are celebrities, so no, you are actually wrong in that it does “affect the integrity of the game” if you view the game as being more than wins and losses and instead an entire industry.
They don’t affect the integrity of games though. PEDs change the outcome of games. If you beat someone up yesterday, if doesn’t change tomorrow score.
Integrity: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
Personally, I think baseball players should have a measure of integrity because they are public figures. MLB is desperately trying to appeal to kids so they can survive and they don’t need this.
It’s sad that people get more wound up about others people’s political and religious views than they do about abuse of women.
usually suspensions like this are longer. (you’ve heard of Odubel right?) This is just the league saving face.
Usually?
Out of all the domestic abuse related suspensions the MLB has handed out, only three have exceeded 80 games.
Not the post to do it in, but welcome back ry! I’ve surfed this site for awhile now and you were one of the first commentators I ever saw.
If MLB didn’t suspend players for PEDs, half the league would use them like in the 90s so severe PED suspensions are necessary to prevent PED use
But no severe penalties for abusers?
I see the Dodger manager is thinking about just using his bullpen against the Braves Sunday…. no respect for the Braves.
Gonsolin has shown he deserves more starts at the mlb level and his stuff plays in Oct. May deserves more run and his stuff plays in Oct. Where is the disrespect again?
20 games proves this is just a face saving move. sucks for Urias simply because the league feels a need to act.
“What the actual F$#@ ?!?!” – Larry Baer
Strange they let people post about this guy but when Russell was suspended the articles would never allow comments.
Not really. The last two articles on this subject didn’t allow comments from the start and the comments were locked after a few hours on the one before that. The way these comments seem to be going this comments section won’t stay open for long either. People need to understand that if they weren’t eyewitnesses to any of what happened they should not comment as if they were. As in all the previous cases the Commissioner ruled according to the joint policy and that’s that. Nothing more will be released or explained.
This isn’t like the Russell situation at all. That man verbally and physically beat his wife for years, this was one “push” that could’ve either been a full force push with all his strength or her losing her balance on heels. They didn’t release evidence.
They just suspended Brett Gardner for hitting a dugout. Why? Because integrity of the game.
Then he should serve his suspension and be a better person. Athlete’s aren’t perfect. After he’s done his time, he should be able to put his mistakes behind him like everyone else on this planet.
Oh sure, blame it on Beyonce
Addison Russell was 40 games and is a position player why not 40 starts ?
Because 40 starts is more than a season’s work.
Guys the reason PED users are not allowed to play in the post season is because the owners pushed for it in the last CBA. You can’t just do that when you want the players union won’t go for it. I bet they change it in the next CBA. But everyone is trying to drop the mic pointing out the “moral hypocrisy”. These things happen as the CBA ages.
For what it’s worth,(not much), I threw him off my fantasy team.Of course he was immediately picked up!
Something is wrong when PED users can’t play in the postseason but you can if you knock the snot out of another person.
Something is truly wrong in this world when people defend him in this comment section as well.
Who knocked the snot out of who?
I think he means that someone can knock the snot out of someone and still get to play in the post season but if you take PEDs, you lose your opportunity to play in the postseason.
If the MLB wants to crack own on violence, they need to take a serious look at what they are communicating with its fans.
If true, that’s a super week suspension.
Man everyone is losing their minds. I bet it was nothing more serious than Elaine pushing Jerry in Seinfeld.
Get out…..
Posters when average person or other teams player…. no man should touch a women he should be jailed or never play sports again. I would never be a fan if my team kept him
Posters when it’s their teams player ….. it wasn’t as bad as what other teams player did. Let’s win the championship with him , I’m good .
Second chances are good…when the person in genuinely contrite and interested in self improvement.
Otherwise, it’s just an A Hole Mulligan.
Yes…. If you assault a female or a child even once you should lose your career and everything that comes with that… The only way to stop dpnestic violence is make the punishment so severe it makes people think about their actions beforehand.. On top of that, these guys get the PRIVILEDGE to play professional sports for millions of dollars a year so by stripping that away in situations like this it can help prevent instances in the future. I feel no sympathy for guys like this and i dont think it really matters what team you root for… I mean, ill bet all the men out there would feel alot different if it were their daughter these athletes were smacking around.. Just my thoughts
The problem with this comment and so many others is the presumption that you know what actually happened, when of course you’ve heard only third-hand rumors and so are simply guessing. The commissioner investigated this incident according to the joint policy and came to a judgment based on facts that none of us know, will ever know, or are entitled to know. So, stop guessing. I realize this is a whole lot less satisfying than jumping to conclusions based entirely on how you feel but it’s what responsible people do when they don’t actually know the facts.
Agreed
Commissioner delayed announcement to make sure he was available vs. the Braves. More of the New York discrimination against Atlanta. Hard not to see it in everything the MLB does from determining punishments to deciding in-game challenges.
Oh, good grief. The commissioner investigated this incident for three freaking months and timed the suspension just so it could hurt the Braves?
Many of you are up in arms saying he punched a woman. He did not. “video reports showed the hurler “shoving a female companion …” Get your facts straight before you crucify him.
Thank you to the people who have commented that they will reserve judgment, because we know nothing. Everyone, with every incident that happens, no matter what it is, has an opinion and a judgement about everything! And then it’s like, well you either have to take a liberal or conservative side, and if you don’t take a liberal side, you’re somehow a Trump supporter which makes you a complete scumbag who should be demonized by the “good people” of the world. Sigh…I wonder when being rational, controlling emotion and impulse, and wisdom will become common values/practices? I wonder when people will stop reacting to everything. I also wonder when hypocrisy will end…”oh, yeah so, dude, it’s like so bad when a man shoves a woman, but like having abortions is totally ok…but what’s happening at the border man, is just like, awful, but oh, euthanasia is totally cool! And like, we should totally end homelessness, but like let’s totally promote drugs, sex, violence and like also not have many mental health services.” I mean, it’s just ridiculous! How about universal human dignity, and how about violence against anyone isn’t ok? How about we ditch moral relativism, which is hypocritical in and of itself, and pick up and bible and a catechism? How about we start actually believing in love, which is God, and stop being a culture of hatred and death?
Brendan really beautifully put. You get my vote for what ever you run for.
Thank you for your well thought out words. Important for us to have people sharing
that have human care.
