Robinson Cano went 3-for-3 in the Mets’ 13-2 win over the Pirates today, though the veteran infielder’s big day was tarnished by a left hamstring strain. Cano had to be removed from the game after suffering the injury while running the bases during a fourth-inning single. An MRI is scheduled for Monday, and it seems likely that Cano will face the third injured-list stint of the season due to his left leg — a pair of quad injuries sidelined the veteran second baseman earlier in the year. While Cano is still hitting only .252/.295/.415 over 346 PA this season, he was in the midst of a hot streak at the plate, as Sunday marked his fourth consecutive multi-hit game.
We’ve already had quite a bit of injury news from around the game today, and here are updates on some other situations…
- Yonny Chirinos’ start was cut short after five innings and 63 pitches today due to right middle finger inflammation. Chirinos will undergo tests on Monday, though the Rays right-hander told MLB.com’s Juan Toribio and other reporters that he doesn’t think his finger is a major concern. Today’s outing boosted Chirinos to a 3.62 ERA and 7.82 K/9 (against just a 1.99 BB/9) over 126 2/3 innings this season, as Chirinos has increasingly been used in a traditional starting pitching role rather than as the “bulk pitcher” behind an opener. Chirinos’ emergence has helped a Rays rotation that has continued to rely heavily on openers and bullpen games, particularly with Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow both on the injured list.
- Gary Sanchez is tentatively scheduled to return to the Yankees’ lineup during their series with the Blue Jays from August 8-11, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch tweets. Sanchez is on the verge of beginning a rehab assignment, in the wake of a left groin strain that sent him to the IL on July 24. At the time of the injury, Sanchez was suffering through a brutal slump that had seen him post only a .370 OPS over his previous 93 plate appearances, which dropped his season slash line to .229/.299/.508 over 328 PA.
- After beginning a minor league rehab assignment for the Brewers’ rookie league affiliate, left-hander Brent Suter will continue the process at Double-A, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes. Suter underwent Tommy John surgery in late July 2017 and is still hopeful of returning to the hill for the Brewers before the season is over. The soft-tossing Suter posted a 3.91 ERA, 3.54 K/BB rate, and 7.2 K/9 over 204 2/3 innings for Milwaukee from 2016-18, overcoming his lack of velocity by becoming a master at generating soft contact from opposing batters.

The Mets have just been decimated with injuries. It’s extraordinary that they’re one game within .500 for the season. A true testament to as great GM and a fine manager. They have so much depth. And don’t forget those 2 World Championships. They’re Amazing!

It’s sarcasm? Hopefully….

Which is part of the problem… Haters gonna hate… At 40-50 before the break, most on here and on fan sites were calling for blowing up the team to start a whole rebuild by trading Syndergaard, Wheeler, Diaz, and even deGrom. I’m happy Brodie didn’t listen to these calls. He made the moves more with a look toward next year, but I have been posting for weeks that the NL wildcard race was wide open, even when the only team behind the Mets was Miami. I knew a sustained run could get them right back in the mix. They’re there now but they need to continue this against teams with winning records.

im slightly inebriated…. but im thinking that’s sarcasm.

The words, their great GM, is the clue to sarcasm.

What if instead of trying to rush him through the injury, they just put him on the disabled list and left him there until he was fully healthy?

Or until November 2023
Bill
Only if they have insurance on his contract.

It’s a different injury this time so I don’t see why you’re claiming they rushed him back.

It’s the same leg. Injuries don’t exist in vacuums. Running around with a damaged quad puts more stress and weight on the rest of the leg, and is a good way to injure a hamstring.

Wait just a minute? You telling me a 36 year old on a giant contract is injured again? Collusion though… simpletons

Suter is probably one of the most entertaining players in baseball. If you haven’t seen his acting in the Brewers skits, it’s pretty hilarious.

It amazes me to read how bad a job BVW and Callaway have done.
They are now 3 games out of the wild card spot
They have 33 home and 18 road games left
They arguably have the best starting staff in baseball
Since the all star break they are playing excellent baseball and doing it with Alonso in a slump
When they signed Lawrie they weren’t sure how good Alonso would be and never dreamed he would get off like he did
They were counting on Nimmo building on last year and hoping that Cespedes was coming back at mid season
Yet with the bull pen imploding during the first half they are still in striking distance
For those who are constantly criticizing Mickey, please realize that he is in constant touch with Riggleman a four time manager
When they make a decision they can’t make the player succeed

…or the rest of baseball is just as bad? They weren’t counting on cespedes at all and should not had been counting on Nimmo, who struck out at an astounding rate after the league figured him out. They failed to pick up any outfield help and have entrusted the grass to four infielders. The bullpen has been terrible (other than Lugo) and no pitcher has shown any improvement under that coaching staff. What happened to Callaway being such a guru in Cleveland? Syndergaard , Wheeler and Matz have era’s approaching 5.00!

I’m still amazed that professional athletes in great condition with some of the best trainers and facilities that are supposed to be running and stretching daily, pull muscles running around the bases.

Wait… Even being in the midst of a multi-hit “hot streak” his obp is still below .300? Not batting average but obp? I guess $100 million and top prospects don’t buy what they used to. Repeated upper leg muscle injuries are common with juicers. God I feel bad for Mets fans. You gave up your best 2 minor leaguers and over $100 million in cash for a below average relief pitcher and this? Man. Have fun watching the hated Yankees continue to dominate the NY headlines for the next half decade.
scarfish
He just looks so thrilled in that pic.

Watch out here comes the Mets. Glad they didn’t listen to all the experts who were advocating it was time to rebuild. Rosario is playing like a gold glove, has been getting better and better since the two weeks in May when he made 9 or 10 errors in two weeks.
