Marlins righty Pablo Lopez returned today from the 10-day injured list. The 23-year-old had been out since June with shoulder problems, so it’s good to see he was able to get back up to speed before the end of the season. Lopez wasn’t at his best, allowing four earned in five innings, but averaged 94.1 mph with his fastball.
Here are some more health notes from around the game …
- The Giants are sending reliever Trevor Gott in for a closer look after he experienced tightness in his right forearm tonight, as John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle was among those to cover on Twitter. That’s not the news anyone wanted at the end of an enormously successful season for the young reliever, who has been among the nicest surprises in San Francisco. At this point, there’s nothing to be done but wait and hope that there isn’t a significant underlying problem.
- There are a bevy of updates on the health front for the Indians, as MLB.com’s Mandy Bell covers on Twitter. In particular, the club has a big slate of rehabbing hurlers appearing over the next few days. Danny Salazar threw a frame today at Double-A without incident. Jefry Rodriguez is slated to appear with the club’s top affiliate tomorrow, with fellow starter Carlos Carrasco and reliever Dan Otero scheduled to throw in game action on Wednesday. Meanwhile, long-absent outfielder Bradley Zimmer has reached the Triple-A level and seems likely to be an option in the majors again soon.
- Prized young Rays hurler Brendan McKay, optioned down after a rough recent start, has hit the injured list at Triple-A, as MLB.com’s Juan Toribio was among those to tweet. He’s said to be dealing with shoulder fatigue, which sounds worrisome but doesn’t appear to be cause for any concern. The expectation is that he won’t miss more than a week of action, which means he ought to be ready to help the Rays again soon — if and when he’s needed.
- As usual, there’s a lengthy list of Yankees injury updates to touch upon. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch has the latest (all links to Twitter account). Key righties Luis Severino and Dellin Betances are just one step removed from possible rehab outings, which puts them back on the map for activation down the stretch — and potential postseason availability. The situation is less certain for outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who “could take on-field batting practice Tuesday for the first time” since going down with a PCL strain about two months ago. And the club indicates it’s possible that southpaw Jordan Montgomery will be ready to throw in the majors before the end of the regular season. He’s slated to continue his rehab work at Double-A. As for shortstop Didi Gregorius, he’s bouncing back quickly after being hit by a pitch. He could be back in the lineup in short order.

Of course adding Severino and Betances to the Yankees roster for the postseason would be big. Don’t discount the addition of Jordan Montgomery if he’s healthy it could be huge.

Im not sure if its worth risking putting Montgomery on the playoff roster. We havent even seen how good he will be coming off TJS. He also has no prior playoff experience. With him being so early in his career and coming off a major injury i dont think he should be thrusted into the playoff roster. I think its worth discounting the impact that Jordan Montgomery will have on the teams playoff success, i dont think it could be huge. I like the kid and I think he is solid. Maybe he could give some good starts late in the season to give the bullpen some extra rest before the playoffs but thats about all the contribution I see him making at this time. Next season could be very different though. If he pitches how he was pitching before the injury he is a significantly better option than someone like JA Happ
pinballwizard1969
He’s already had one rehab start of a couple of innings. He had TJS in June 2018 if he’s ready to contribute mid to late Sept. that would be great. I can see him making a contribution in the postseason in the bullpen he he has no setbacks in rehab.
Keep in mind Montgomery isn’t a kid he turns 27 this December.

He isnt a kid necessarily by age but he doesnt even have 2 years of MLB experience under his belt. He is still green. He has 1 year and another that was cut short by what, the second start? Not only does J. Montgomery need to be healthy and get his groove back but he also needs to be mentally prepared for a playoff game. I just think the timing isnt right for him to go from being the #5 starter, to a year+ long layoff, to pitching in rehab games, and then playing in the playoffs. I personally dont think we’ll be seeing much of J Montgomery in this years playoffs. Especially considering how they didnt use him in the playoffs when he was healthy and pitching fairly well in 2017.

@Begamin
If Montgomery is able to start a few games on the mlb level then I think they should be open to adding him to the playoff roster. It could give them another lefty to use with or instead of Tarpley or Cortes Jr..
t would be interesting to see how the Yanks balance extra bullpen arms vs the bench especially if some of the injured guys come off the list.
Begamin
I think the Yankees will rely on the return of Betances for the extra bullpen help. Maybe they’ll carry Monty on the roster and just not use him unless its an emergency. I just cant see them throwing someone so early in their career who is also returning from a major injury into biggest moments. Last thing you want is a mental meltdown from the pressure

Gear in could push them ove the top, don’t forget.

Bring Severino, Betances back for the post season but not Stanton. We need pitching but we do not need Stanton. He was such a choke hitter last year in the playoffs. The other guys deserve the spot, not Stanton. Yankees will be trading Frazier in the off season and I wish they could trade Stanton also. The only team that he will accept a trade to is the Dodgers. They will not take on that contract, no way. Betances walks after this year as a FA, let him make a name for himself in the playoffs. This is why the Yankees did not trade for pitching, these two are free, because they are already Yankees. I was at Dodger stadium Friday night and for sure that was the preview of this years WS. By the way, these are the two best teams in MLB and will be for the next many years, they are built to last. It’s not even fair. Both teams are built from within, not as many FA as you think. However, the FA they have gotten are very good (except Stanton). He is just like A Rod, great numbers but all padded in non clutch situations.

Oh boy, another Giancarlo hate post that makes no seans. There is a lot to gain by adding in Giancarlo to the roster. The dude hasnt posted an OPS+ below 120 since his rookie season (118+). He is two years removed from a MVP season and one year removed from a solid follow up season. Its not like he lost his ability to hit.
I also think its misguided to point to playoff numbers as any indicator of how he will do in future playoff appearances. Considering that it was his first playoff run ever, its an incredibly small sample size that you shouldnt base anything on. It was also a learning experience for him, and a second go around will probably not produce the same results. If you can catch Giancarlo up to game speed and have him see the ball well before the playoffs, only a fool will leave him out.
Begamin
Also, ARod’s career playoff .OPS was .822. The Yankees probably do not win the 2009 World Series without him.
Playoff numbers are finicky and small sample sizes. You picking out ARod as a bad playoff performer is actually funny considering his playoff numbers arent that bad.

The Stanton twins, Mike and Giancarlo back together! Whooooo Be y!

Take your pills!

That’s some long winded trolling. Cut it down a bit, save yourself some time.
PopeMarley
“The only team that he will accept a trade to is the Dodgers” There is absolutely no source that proves that at this time, nor was there prior. All of this of course is only based on the fact he blocked trades to the Cardinals, the Giants, and purportedly grew up a Dodgers fan.
Bruin1012
For sure a preview of the World Series hmmm. Houston says hi.

I agree not to bring Stanton back. I’d rather have Hicks back. Is he done for the year or what? I think Hicks, Encarnocion, Betances, Voit and Sevy could well push the Yankees over the top. Although I might rather have Ford’s left handed bat in the post season than EE’s.
bigwestbaseball
Yea, I know, Stanton was a trade not a FA.
Polish Hammer
Surprised to see Salazar on the list since they sent him home.
Polish Hammer
Topped out at 89 and only threw 8 pitches. Good riddance!
Melchez
Mccay hits the injured list right after being demoted… sounds like the Ray’s are saving some money manipulating service time.
TBRaysBucsBolts
He was in AAA ball. How would that help them with service time? Also, 3/5 of the rotation is on the injured list. They need any pitching they could find.
Birch
He’s saying they sent him down to be put on the IL. He accrues service time if he’s on the IL for the MLB squad. Not that hard to understand what he meant.
johnrealtime
Not to mention that he is now getting a MiLB salary as opposed to major league. McKay has been screwed in several ways this year

Very excited for Montgomery to be back. He showed stood stuff his rookie season and could be a sneaky contributor this postseason
