The Giants have claimed right-hander Burch Smith off waivers from the Brewers, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com tweets. Smith had been in limbo since the Brewers designated him for assignment Friday. The Giants opened up a spot for Smith by designating fellow righty Ryan Dull for assignment, Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Smith’s the second waiver claim since Friday for the Giants, who took Kyle Barraclough from the Nationals then. Smith, like Barraclough, will report to Triple-A Sacramento. The 29-year-old Smith has pitched to an ugly 7.82 ERA/6.69 FIP with 9.95 K/9 against 7.11 BB/9 in 12 2/3 major league innings this season. He has been much better over 77 1/3 Triple-A frames, however, with a 2.33 ERA/4.29 FIP, 9.89 K/9 and 4.31 BB/9.
The 29-year-old Dull lasted only a week on the Giants’ 40-man – they claimed him from the Bay Area rival Athletics last Monday. Dull didn’t throw a pitch for the Giants, instead tossing three frames of three-run ball with their Triple-A affiliate. The once-promising major leaguer has spent the majority of the past two seasons in the minors.

Ryan Dull? How boring.

Farhan back on the accumulating scrubs train!! Does this Greek God ever sleep?
selw0nk 2
I thought he was Pakistani?
O Conchobhair
Pretty sure he’s American.
gmenfan
So far, the “scrubs” are carrying this team.
halloffamernobodycares
to a sub .500 record?
After being world beaters for the most part of last month?

Dickerson is hurt…when he’s on, the team wins
Xavier Blaine
Belt/Crawford/Posey have done absolutely nothing for this team and yet they’ve exceeded expectations. Why? Pillar, Solano, Dickerson, Yaz, Bumgarner, Samardzija, and the scary back end of the bullpen (Smith, Moronta, Watson, Gott)
gmenfan
Your comment doesnt make much sense if you’ve actually watched Giants baseball this year. Even when the Giants were on a tear last month, it wasnt the core players that were driving the success. Posey is starting to hit a little, but Crawford and Belt’s bats are DOA, and Panik was DFAd. Offensively, it’s been a collection of minor league deals (Yaz, Dickerson, Vogt, Solano, etc.) that have been driving the offense.
Jean Matrac
Pillar (7 year vet), Bum, Shark, Smith, Watson, Sandoval, and Vogt, all who have contributed to the summer surge, can hardly be described as scrubs.
pustule bosey
well, that was dull.
txsfgiant
I saw dull pitch a couple of times and he was really good. Interesting what happened to him. Too bad.
stubby66
Thank you San Francisco now we dont have to worry about him being a September call up. But gotta admit I like some of the the pick ups lately
james matzas
So someone is opposed to scrubs Farhan has claimed??? Is he opposed to current Giants Yaz & Dickerson????
wiggysf
Technically both of those were trade acquisitions, but you have a point.
alpha-17
But they were both still dfa’d from their teams
filbert10
Unfortunately Yaz and Dickerson are kept the Giants from doing a tear down at the trade deadline. Which is what Farhan should be doing.

Larry Baer and the ownership group is what kept (and will continue to keep) the Giants from doing a tear down.
Jean Matrac
Wrong. it was made clear that any decision was Zaidi’s. If you doubt that look at the Giant’s pursuit of Harper. As it turns out, that was all Zaidi, with the ownership group, while not against signing Harper, was more tepid about it than Zaidi was. Ownership knows they have one of the young new baseball geniuses. They aren’t going to pull out the rug from under him if they want to keep him. A big part of the summer surge was the result of Zaidi’s maneuvering. Ownership knows that.

What tear down was prevented? They couldn’t trade Crawford, Belt, Longoria because of no trade clauses and too much money owed. They ain’t trading Posey. Had they got what they considered a good offer for Bum and/ or Smith, they would have moved both. They freed up 18M by pawning off Melancon on Atlanta. They got rid of Pomeranz, Holland, Black and Dyson for some younger, controllable players. They dumped Panik. Not much else he could have done. They’ll move Crawford, Belt or Longoria over the winter but they’ll eat a large portion of the remaining contract in order to turn the roster over further. They’re stuck with a handful of underperforming veterans who are making big money. Going to take time to trim all the fat. We’re on the right track
jrjalr
Agreed. And I also feel there’s a level of respect for Bochy in keeping Crawford, Belt, etc. Next year with a new manager, he’ll have a better opportunity to clean the slate.
arc89
There was a market for both Madbum and Smith but the Giants were on a hot streak and top management want to sell tickets. Trading them they could have received some good prospects but now instead nothing.. They would have easily received Frazier in a deal with NYY but of course no tear down because ticket sales are more important.
SFGiants74
Why would the Giants want Frazier? He can’t play defense.
Jean Matrac
It was Zaidi’s decision. That was made perfectly clear. He was leaning toward trading both Smith and Bum, and would have if the return was reasonable. The Yankees are on record as saying they would not trade Frazier for a rental. And as has already been pointed out, Frazier is not the Giant’s type. He’s a future DH, and belongs in the AL.
snotrocket
Hopefully he wipes the slate clean of both Brandon’s. Zaidi cout almost definitely get better production from guys on minimum salary deals, so the money is basically a wash and the team is better.
RummiCube
Yeah but we don’t know what the offers were for both pure rentals. Teams are loath to give up real good prospects in that scenario unless the guy is elite and fills a glaring hole. Holding them does give the team a chance to give them QO’s which they likely won’t take giving them a opportunity at end of comp round A and B picks. So maybe the offers they got weren’t as good as that or were close to a wash.
Sadler
I really wish there was a mandatory 40-man roster minimum stay — 30 days or something.
ba2929
Why do you want your favorite team to be stuck with dead weight for 30 days?
That sounds like a horrendously bad idea.
lowtalker1
Seems like he still hasn’t figured out how to pitch. I remember when the padres brought him back in the day. He’d throw fastballs by everyone the first time threw and then get lit up the second time through.
