7:40pm: The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reports several details on the procedure performed on Pedroia. The 35-year-old underwent a “relatively new” surgery called a “subchondroplasty” aimed at repairing multiple hairline fractures that had formed and strengthening the bones in his knee. He also had several bone spurs removed. Speier also quotes an orthopedic surgeon (Twitter link) in calling today’s surgery a “much bigger” procedure than the previous surgeries performed on Pedroia’s knee. The Globe’s Peter Abraham tweets that this particular surgery is sometimes performed as an alternative to a knee replacement.
12:35pm: Red Sox second bagger Dustin Pedroia has undergone another procedure on his balky left knee, according to a team announcement. A “joint preservation procedure” was performed yesterday.
Pedroia’s status has remained unclear amidst ongoing knee problems. Most recently, he acknowledged the possibility that he may never return to the MLB field of play. The plans aren’t yet entirely clear, but it sounds as if Pedroia will at least give a shot at a comeback. The announcement specifies that the veteran “will begin his rehabilitation in Arizona.”
Incredibly, this marks the fifth knee operation that Pedroia has undergone since the 2016-17 offseason. He’s only been able to suit up for a total of nine games in 2018-19, and his last (mostly) healthy season in 2017 featured one of the weakest offensive showings of his career. He’s under contract through the 2021 season after signing an eight-year, $110MM extension back in July 2013.
Quacktastic_Duck
Hang em up dude.. you’ve had one hell of a career.
GoSoxGo
Maybe an orthopedic surgeon out there can answer this question: is it possible that a person could play major league baseball with a full knee replacement? Just a thought. . . .
OnTheBrink
As a Physical therapist, he is way too young for a knee replacement. They last only 20 years or so and unless he had a serious knee issue that is beyond repair and he couldn’t function outside of baseball, I highly doubt they would perform a knee replacement.
dlevin11
If Dustin Pedroia was playing on this team right now I am sure there would not have been an eight-game losing streak. Pedroia is a savage.
twinsfan368
The Red Sox just simply don’t have pitching and that’s that
AtlSoxFan
Cora screwed the pooch by not letting the starters get a normal spring training in.
A staff of Sale, Price, Erod, and Porcello having Eovaldi as your #5 are a fairly talented bunch.
But when you overuse, chewup, spit out, and burn out your bullpen because those starters didn’t get on track…. well you get what we have here.
We’d all love a Lil more BP help, but the roster itself was reasonable solid. Nowhere near as bad as this makes it seem
nyy42
Lol… Yup Spring Training Killed This Team???
qbass187
You’re missing the piece of the puzzle where Dombrowski ignored the bullpen last season and the starters had to take on the additional load of a game PLUS relief outings on short rest. DD’s lack of planning in the BP lead to burn out in the rotation that these guys (with the shortest offseason of all the teams in the playoffs) have clearly showed. Then instead of seeing that an correcting the issue… he doubled down.
papasmurf25
Neither do the Yankees ( starters )and look at them
Bruin1012
Yankees are built for not having starters they built a bullpen team.
The Red Sox were built as a team that were starter heavy but they haven’t performed as expected which has put a ton of pressure on a bullpen that wasn’t built for that kind of pressure.
The Yankees are using their bullpen a ton I think it may catch up with them when they play Houston or the Dodgers. The Dodgers and especially Houston are just a much more rounded team.
rocky7
Would agree with your comment as far as the Dodgers and Houston being more rounded only because of their starting rotation and the way they are pitching right now but the Yankees are right there with them as far as offense and bullpen…maybe a little ahead as far as bullpen.
mynameispepe
It’s Dombrowski, he doesn’t believe in bullpens.
driftcat28 2
Yes, yes they would have that losing streak lol. He’d make no difference
rwilson1721
You’ve been my favorite player, but the jig is up. You were a great batter and an even better leader on the field.
GB85
No shame in calling it a career at this point, doing otherwise just risks further injuries.

Just financial stupidity.

He has 25 million reasons not to retire.
Red Sox front office need to figure out a buyout and add whatever it is to the $18 million that is already deferred to him for 2021-2028.
Sabermetric Acolyte
Pedroia strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn’t want to sit on a bench and collect money. I figure the front office will do right by him and offer a good buyout along with job like special assistant to the GM. In turn he’ll bear it and probably say something about not wanting to be a distraction or something.
Clavette
I think any person with a family would take that money to sit on the bench rather than give it up.
The 25m will provide for his family long after hes gone. Not to mention everything else he has made
martras
Well, that’s exactly what he has been doing. Just collecting a paycheck when it’s been obvious for quite some time that he’s not coming back.
luckyh
There is no buyout. He just retires, they collect the insurance, he gets all his money.
AtlSoxFan
If you “retire” or admit you can’t ever play again then any insurance that may be there is generally forfeited (and John Henry has been on the record in the past for NOT insuring player contracts due to bad experience trying to collect in the past, so, who knows if there is any)
Typically if you retire you also do not get the money remaining on your deal either, aside from deferred payments deemed earned or a signing bonus portion that is deemed earned. Yearly rate for seasons to come would be forfeited
pasha2k
He is and was the best! I feel so lucky I got to see him play the game, as I was The Rocket, too. I agree no long losing streak with him. We’ll miss you!
dimelotitony
As a Yankee fan you have to love his toughness and what he brought to the table each and every night having to prove himself over and over again playing a sport that not many of his height weren’t able to do at the level he was playing at one point. It is time he faces realization and hang up the spikes ala David Wright it is time to listen to your body and focus on his family and be able to walk and play with his kids.
baseballhobo
Muddy Chicken?
Sabermetric Acolyte
At this point it’s career over for Pedey, its a sad way to end a great career of a player who was a true Dirtdog.
cgallant
Yeah do what David Wright did. Play one more home game and ride off into the sunset.
mike156
A “joint preservation procedure” doesn’t sound good. If you are a baseball fan, you love your guys, and you admire talent and hard work in other team’s players (who aren’t either cheats or jerks). Pedroia was talented and hardworking, and played the game right. I don’t think he’s quite HOF, but it’s been a fine and memorable career for him.
whyhayzee
Maybe he can be the smallest DH in history. The man can hit. Second base has never been a long term position for the Red Sox. Plenty of good ones over the years who have come and gone. Jody Reed? Mike Griffin? Marty Barret? Jerry Remy? Jeff Frye? Mike Andrews? And lots of others for a year or two at a time. Revolving door, Dustin and Marty lasted the longest I think. Dustin is the best. Who knows? Maybe he can make it back. Never say never.
ntorsky
Amazing player, amazing person, and I think he’ll be an amazing coach. I’m not going to pretend to know any details but I think it’s time to use his insane talent to teach some young guys and maintain his own health.
metsie1
Good player but he’s done. Sad but his knees are shot.
KnicksFanCavsFan
why did he wait until now to hedge the surgery? couldn’t he have had it during the season or spring training?
martras
It’s a desperation move. I’m sure he was told he should stop playing baseball with his knee as it is and he’s hoping for a miracle cure to give him another year or two. These types of procedures are sketchy at best. They’re designed to slow degeneration and delay the onset of arthritis and knee replacements.

I honestly thought he retired last year. He had a decent career but hes not the reason the Sox are doing bad hes been irrelevant the last few years. Blame your “genious” gm who completly ignored your bullpen. I had an argument with some guy who claimed Pedroia was as good as Jeter Its so crazy how some ppl fall in love with their stars that they choose to ignore reality. My only argument was just look at their numbers and then argue more. He couldn’t believe hes eyes he said he was going to be a first ballet hall of Famer after he agreed with me that no chance hes a hall of Famerl numbers never lie.
Occams_hairbrush
Dude, you start by saying you thought he retired, which shows you aren’t up on baseball, then write a book about what you think about baseball.
Melchez
I didnt know the ballet had a hall of fame.
slapnuts
It’s been 19 hours and I still have no idea what any of this means.
kelticknotz
Surprised that Pedroia has had the surgery, earlier he had said he had had enough surgeries and the knee wasn’t responding. It might be a last chance to grab that brass ring.
As for Boston this year, there is something wrong. Yes the starters didn’t get used much until late in spring training, but we are now in August and they haven’t improved. I look at Price and Sale, something is wrong there either they are hurt and hoping to work thru it, or the other teams have clued in on what they are going to throw, look at their last starts they were both terrible getting lit up like Christmas trees. The bullpen is virtually none existent. But also the star players Bett and Martinez are not having the kind of years expected of them.
And finally they did nothing at the trade deadline, but that was to be expected who could they send down or trade to bring in the help they need. Those huge contracts are going to choke them if Sale, Price, Martinez and Bett don’t come around. Remember Martinez can opt out at the end of this season and both Betts and Bradley are free agents at the end of 2020.
Nobby
Hanley and Pablo’s contracts come off the books after this season. 40 million a year to play with.
kelticknotz
Hanley was off before this season began, Panda comes off at the end of the season. But thats not going to help Boston. Remember they gave both Sale and Bogaerts contract extensions which kick in at the end of this year and both got big salary increases. Betts, Bradley, Devers are arbitration eligible.
Boston is way over the luxury tax limit, this season it cost them 10 positions in the 1st round of the draft. Next season they will forfeit a 1st round pick. This is rough on a team with a barebones farm system at the moment.
Occams_hairbrush
Agreed. It might be a year or two before the Red Sox win the World Series again.
Nobby
Same facility they keep Teddy Ballgame’s head I believe. Right next to Austin Powers.
luckyh
If he can’t play again, I hope he at least has a pain free retirement. The guy is a dirt dog. It’s probably killing him not to be on the field.
JayRyder
This guy had an outside shot at 3000 hits. HOF
It’s too bad. But he’ll always go down as an MVP. Can’t take that away.
SecsSeksSecks
Tight. That’s so tight.
PeterDipersio
Everyone here is missing the point all together. It’s not Dombrowski , it’s not because Pedroia isn’t playing. What is it that drives everything ? MONEY ! When the owners tell Dombrowski that they will not spend this year past the luxury tax threshold, there is only so much a general manager and team can do ! The Rec Sox are my favorite team and they have to many players going into their mid 30’s making way to much money. Price , Porcello, Pedroia , JD Martinez these players are getting paid like they are the top players in the league at their positions and they are not! Red Sox need a youth movement bad and I mean bad! They should be trading those players I mentioned and replenish their farm system at triple A! I know Mookie will be gone soon and that money will come off the books and the Sox should use that money to sign a player in their mid 20’s not mid 30’s.
