The Diamondbacks have sent Yasmany Tomas outright to Triple-A Reno, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, removing Tomas from the D-Backs’ 40-man roster. He had previously been optioned to Triple-A on Thursday.
The move comes after a brief stint that saw Tomas play in the Majors for the first time since 2017. In four games this season, the 28-year-old went 0-for-6 with three strikeouts.
No longer on the 40-man roster, it would appear that the Diamondbacks are running out of patience with Tomas, one of the organization’s highest-paid players. He’s managed a serviceable .765 OPS for his career, including a 2016 season in which he clubbed 31 home runs, but the masher has failed to offset his defensive shortcomings enough to justify a spot on the roster.
Tomas is still owed more than $20MM through the end of next season and he’s been productive in the minor leagues—to the tune of a .944 OPS this season—but evidently the organization has minimal confidence in his ability to defend capably.
Seems like a DH candidate for an AL team.
.768 OPS doesn’t play at DH. He’s tearing up AAA, but it’s the PCL. He’s minor leaguer filler til his deals up. And that’s probably the end of the line after that for him. Maybe he takes a stop in the KBO? He could do some damage there.
He won’t cost much, Jerry Reinsdorf ideal candidate to pick up.
No.
Jays will bottom feed. Shatkins treat Toronto like small market Cleveland.
I can remember the Cuban player craze as if it were yesterday, so many great players came over, such a interesting falloff for Tomas. AAA is filled with defectors who’s big league team does not even call them up.
Rusney Castillo
Took the words out my mouth
Except Rusney actually plays very well in the minors but gets held down due to his salary and the Red Sox proximity to the luxury tax.
Not true,,,,,Rusney and Kung Fu Panda are in the Sox overall payroll of $ 238 Million approx. Just because they are not on the major league roster, they still count against the overall payroll and its proximity to the luxury tax.
He’s not being held down for any reason other than he was a bad investment…..lots of players play well in the minors and then fail to perform when they get brought up. Hitting pretty well at .286 these days.
According to a few articles I just read, Castillo does not count toward the luxury tax for the Red Sox.
Panda best signing all time
Castillo does not count towards luxury tax. You are wrong.
No, the loophole was closed after Castillo’s outright. Castillo doesn’t cont against the threshold.
Yeah he never got the hang of the defense part of the game, pretty good bat though
He hasn’t been a good bat for 3-4 years. If he could hit they would play him but he can’t hit anymore. He can only hit in AAA PCL
2 players have made over 60 million in career earnings and have negative Wars. Tomas and Hector Olivera
I don’t think Olivera got the whole pay because of the suspension and everything else involved
White Sox will sign him because he is Cuban .
Your wrong Thomas, it’s because he’s cheap.
Not from Chicago are you?
Nope.
why outright him when you just burned an option, you’re not contending, and you’re still paying him. Let him play a bit and perhaps DFA him in the offseason.
Nobody will take him away with that contract, so no risk, and if dbacks had plans to add somebody to the 40man/ bring a guy off 60 day IL this is the way you do it. And maaybe, since it’s past trade deadline, some desperate team would swallow that contract for him to DH and then the dbacks could jump for joy at saving 20mil.
So.. there’s absolutely no down side for the team.
Because optioning doesn’t open a spot on the 40-man
He can also now opt for free agency if he’s feeling really crazy, so there’s a very small chance they get out from under his contract
So who did Tomas tick off in the Dbacks chain of command ? Seems he had good power but not worth what they gave him, not his fault, who wouldn’t take the deal.
Love to know the true story why he is buried in the minors.
He has negative value. He can’t play in the field and has poor pitch selection.. Hence the high strikeout rate. That hasn’t changed since he was sent to AAA.
Tomas was a mistake made by the previous regime. Hazen has had Tomas on the trade block for two seasons with zero takers. He has been DFA’d twice now with zero takers.
He is a sunk cost that no one wants.
Can’t play defense is not logical to you?
This is why the MLB needs to start adding defectors into the draft. Add in Asian players also.
Asian free agents NOT on a current club, sure. Else wise you can’t really draft a player you then have to purchase.
And it’s not like all these players are true rookies.
International amateur draft sounds good though, just strictly amateur.
Has he been on the 40-man this whole time? Even after not playing since 2017 prior to this week? Yeesh
He’s gotta be the biggest bust since Kouske
