Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is likely to land on the 10-day injured list after exiting last night’s game with back discomfort, manager A.J. Hinch told reporters including Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. An official decision won’t be made until later tonight, but Hinch and the Astros are “not optimistic” that the star shortstop, who isn’t available for tonight’s contest, will avoid an IL stint.
Hinch was quick to point out that the team hasn’t seen anything to indicate that Correa’s injury is a serious one, but it will likely take several days to heal fully, a time in which the Astros would prefer to carry a full bench.
While it looks as if Correa’s latest stay on the IL will be a quick one, the injury is nonetheless concerning for the Astros and Correa, who dealt with a back injury last season that cost him six weeks and bothered him into the postseason. Furthermore, it will be the second time the 24-year-old has had to go on the injured list this season, after a fractured rib forced him out of action for nearly two months this summer.
With Correa and reserve shortstop Aledmys Diaz both on the shelf, shortstop duties should fall on Jack Mayfield and Myles Straw, who is currently in the minor leagues but is a candidate to be recalled to replace the ailing Correa. Needless to say, either substitute represents a considerable offensive downgrade from the stellar Correa, who has posted a .914 OPS on the season.
When Correa has been on the diamond, he has been one of the Astros’ most productive offensive players while defending at a premium position. Unfortunately for the former first overall selection, availability has at times eluded Correa, for whom 2019 will mark the third consecutive season in which he will fail to eclipse 110 games played.
astromariner
Here we go again. I guess I won’t be keeping him in my fantasy league at $26.
MetsFanaticDanny
I wouldn’t either. That’s way too much. I currently have Marcus Semien and it would cost me only $5 to keep him next season. Seems like a no brainer.
jorge78
Well, let’s remember what’s
REALLY important!
nymetsking
Impact on our fantasy teams, clearly. I’m glad I traded him two weeks ago.
newtzb0ss
He pretty much owes the Astros 3 years of cheap control now… If he has any honor he needs to sign a Cheap 3 year extension when hes a free agent.
Geebs
Wtf??? This is a joke right?
athleticsnchill
Yeah no one does that.
stan lee the manly
This is a pretty terrible take. It’s not like the guy is trying to be on the IL, it’s part of the game and being a major leaguer.
He’s also getting paid peanuts, it’s not like he’s costing the Astros anything. Even if he spent three quarters of every year he’s played hurt, the Astros would have still gotten value out of his contract.
astrosfan4life
He’s making $5 million this year, that’s hardly peanuts. But it is a terrible take.
teufelshunde4
5 million vs regular working people is huge, but vs real money its nothing.
Ive never understood fans taking sides with billionaires. Esp when players put their health on the line for astonishingly short careers.
We have more in common with players, then owners.
astrosfan4life
We have zero in common with either one. I don’t side with anyone and my comment had absolutely nothing to do with the owners. But since you brought it up, the owners deserve all of the profit they want because without them there are no professional sports.
Every athlete is replaceable by someone younger and better, year in and year out. However owners are NOT replaceable as very few people on Earth have the money to buy a franchise and develop it. They had fortunes prior to owning a professional sports team, whereas the vast majority of millionaire athletes came from next to nothing…or nothing. One group is replaceable year after year, and the other carries the entire financial burden and/or risk.
Players profit off of the game as do most owners. However there are other owners who lose money owning a team. When players are prepared to lose money during the bad times then the argument of equals can begin. When players have the wealth to buy a team, build a stadium, pay salaries to players/staff/stadium staff, etc. Then all things will be equal.
Strike Four
lmao “honor”
grow up this isnt fantasy world its about money now and ALWAYS will be whether YOU like it or not
jorge78
Who is “honor?”
southbeachbully
@newtzb0ss
He gave them about 19 WAR and earned about $8 mil over those 5 years. Who got the better of the deal?? Give them 3 more years of “cheap control”. Yeezus.
nymetsking
Newt…. get better!
yankees2016rebuild
GTFO seriously. Newtzboss then the Astros need to pay Altuve at least 50 60 million a year for all those cheap years he gave them. I feel stupider for reading your comment I can only imagine you must feel like a complete tool. Cause you know baseball teams have so much honor. Wow seriously am I missing something is this guy real honor.
teufelshunde4
No player owes any team a discounted contract period.
astrosfan4life
I agree with this in all professions. We work to get paid, even athletes. Take all the money they are willing to give you.
Frahm_
Great player, but these injuries are really derailing his career.
cazick
Carlos Correa = this generation’s Troy Tulowitzki.

When making for predict: the trend is your friend.
Correa is trending toward a disappoint.

Yes Sir!
Buyer beware!

Two Astros CC’s have very similar constitution: Carlos Correa and Cesar Ceseño

Cedeno played 130+ games for 10+ seasons.

But but but…how are racists allowed to blow off some steam if they can’t get away with insinuating that a Latino man might be some ill-conceived idea of “lazy”, which is ironic as no white person making a comment on a webpage will never last 1 week in pro ball???

TradeAcuna
Bold Prediction:
After the Stros win the championship this year, they will trade him to the Mets.
MetsFanaticDanny
Mets would have ZERO interest in him. Rosario is performing well(.291, 12 HRs, 15 SBs) and is now showing more versatility by playing some outfield. Not to mention, he’s a year younger than Correa. Yea, I think the Mets are good. Hard pass.
TradeAcuna
If you are afraid of his injury past, then ok. But to compare Rosario to Correa is ludicrous and if you think the former is the better player, you are delusional.
MetsFanaticDanny
It’s not a comparison, it’s a matter of Correa is a SS, so is Rosario. They both offer great things to a baseball team. So why would the Mets trade more prospects for a player that plays a position that’s already covered by another good player??? Makes zero sense. Correa has far more power than Rosario, no doubt but Rosario also hits for a better average, more speed & most importantly, stays on the field. Like I said before, hard pass.
boo rad
Sounds eerily similar to a comparison… but yeah, most teams probably prefer running with a player yielding .291 AVG, 1.5 WAR, 101 OPS+ vs. one producing .271 AVG, 3.0 WAR, 137 OPS+. Correa is worth more playing half the season.
TradeAcuna
Rosario has done absolutely nothing in his career other than the hot last two months or so. In fact, the entire Mets team is overachieving right now. He will go back to his norm just like the Mets will.
If the Mets are content, then great. The entire NL East will be grateful.
southbeachbully
@boorad @AllOurGodsHaveAbandonedUs
Rosario is a young enough player who MIGHT be coming into his own. He doesn’t have to hit as many home runs as Correa to prove valuable. Rosario also has 4 years of control left with a couple of those being pre-arbitration. He won’t be a FA until after 2023. Correa is already in his arbitration years, has 2 fewer years of control left and will be a FA 2 years earlier than Rosario (2021).
Met’s have many holes. @MetsFanaticDanny is right in a sense. Not right about Rosario being a better player as to date but right in that it wouldn’t make sense to trade prospects for a marginal 1 or 2 WAR increase at SS, especially one that will probably end up around 3 WAR at the end of year. Unless the plan is to move Rosario to 3B then they’re better of seeking upgrades elsewhere on the field.
TradeAcuna
The Mets are in a win-now mode. I don’t think the Mets care about 2021-23. They will try to win while they still have Degrom and Syn on the mound. Rosario is not reliable unless he proves it. Of course, I could see the Mets moving CC to third, probably a less taxing position.
southbeachbully
@AllOurGodsHaveAbandonedUs
You’re missing the point completely. If they are in “win now mode” and have a capable SS giving them a 3 WAR season this year yet you have holes at 2B, 3B, C, CF and the bullpen then why not use those prospects to fill those other needs? They could move Rosario to 2B but I think they can get by if they fill out the other needs at 3B and CF. So no it wouldn’t make sense for the Mets to trade for Correa. I mean if the Astros, who are in “win now mode” are thinking of moving him then doesn’t send a message to others? It’s not like they have a SS at AA/AAA that’s a sure fire bet to be an upgrade to Correa. They can still have him for two more seasons and can probably afford to bring him back if they wanted to.
nymetsking
South, note who you’re debating with, it’s pointless to bring logic into the discussion. But you’re wrong that Houston doesn’t have a better SS. Have you heard of a guy named Bregman?
Melchez
Isn’t this the same team that overpaid to get Cano? A 2b when the mets already had a top 2b?
Vedder80
There isn’t a team in MLB that has zero interest in acquiring him. There are likely few, of any, that would be willing to meet the cost it would require to actually do so, but every single team would love to have him on their roster, even with the injury concern.
southbeachbully
@Vedder80
In a fantasy league, yes, but this is the real world. Mets would have to trade prospects to get him. So with concerns at other positions on the field would it make sense to deal for Correa when you already have Rosario doing a good job thus far? No. In fact, it makes sense to let Rosario man SS and either graduate those prospects or trade them to fill other needs.
And available to play counts. The idea that Correa for 75 games is amazing and trumps having a slightly above average SS for 150 games is non-sense. Not when the resource allocation was high.
You know why it made sense for the Yanks to take a risk on Stanton? Because all it took were two rookies that didn’t factor into their immediate future and if hurt for a prolonged time they have other bats that can fill in at DH or they can afford to acquire a replacement in FA. A team like the Mets, even tho they are also in NY, it hurts them a lot more.
Strike Four
Danny, you are delusional if you think the Mets wouldn’t jump all over this.
The Mets have no idea how to run a baseball team, remember? They already were talking about moving Rosario. I don’t think it will happen but to act like you honestly think the Mets wouldnt do this move, you are mistaken.

Please do not feed the

for him!
You did get help!!!!!

Unclenolanrules
Nah, Dallas Cowboys..
its_bigger
Looks like the injury bug is hitting them at a tough time of the year.
1993astro
Correa’s injuries seem to always happen when at home, never on the road. Long series on the road, first day (night) home and he’s down in the back. Broke rib from at-home massage? He better get that girl pregnant soon. Otherwise, he gonna be worn down to a nub before he negotiates a contract.
antibelt
Works out for the Astros. This depresses his value during arbitration, and they really don’t need him for a week.
astrosfan4life
It actually doesn’t, hence his $5M salary this year. Lack of production can hurt his side of the negotiation, however his team can argue his value when healthy (and will win the argument).
astros_fan_84
I think it’s silly to suggest that they would trade Correa. The next two years is the window to win. Take whatever he gives, give him the QO, and move on.
Correa thinks he’s a generational player. Let him try to convince teams he’s worth $200M.
astrosrock
Correa took far less than the slotted salary in order to help the Astros overpay to sign Lance McCullers later in the first round. Astros don’t win the World Series without McCullers destroying the Yankees with 24 straight curveballs in game 7 of the ALCS. God bless you Carlos Correa, get well soon!!!!
astrosrock
Slotted bonus as the 1-1 pick
astrosfan4life
He “took far less” because he was considered a reach at 1-1 for the draft. Most pundits had 5-10 other players ahead of him, so the Astros wisely (in hindsight) gambled and took him at 1-1 for a discount so they could sign McCullers who was also thought to be impossible to sign.
astrosrock
We agree, Astros are geniuses and Correa is a great guy! God Bless Correa, viva Astros!!!
GreenWood Porter
Astros just put Correa on the 10-day IL, along with Sanchez.
I’m guessing they call up Myles Straw and Framber Valdez tomorrow.
astrosrock
Agree with this too, come on Framber!
yankees2016rebuild
Not Astros fan but I hope hes not this generations tulo.
bigwestbaseball
Correa is so over hyped. Misses way too many games. Trade him and sign DD Gregorious who is far better all around player.

Only one sentence you typed was actually correct and it wasn’t the first or third sentence.

I think 2 and 3 are correct
