The Cardinals have released outfielder Drew Robinson, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter). That opens a 40-man spot for the club, though it’s not clear yet how it’ll be utilized.
Robinson recently underwent season-ending elbow surgery, so he could have been placed on the 60-day injured list. But it seems the Cards have decided already that he would not hold a 40-man slot over the course of the offseason to come.
The 27-year-old Robinson, who was acquired from the Rangers over the offseason, appeared only briefly in the majors in St. Louis. He turned in solid offensive work at Triple-A, slashing .265/.385/.423 with six home runs, but obviously had not shown enough to force his way into the plans before the health issues cut short his campaign.

Pretty glad honestly. Didn’t feel like we got a fair return from that trade
hollidayfever
In what conceivable universe should the Cardinals have ever expected to get anything in return for Patrick Wisdom? He legit sucks, kinda like Drew Robinson.
STLCards33
Sorry. Cardinal fans are a tad delusional.

He was acquired for depth. With his injury and ascension of others, there was no real need. They can go ahead and release Cecil and Cingrani too, as far as i’m concerned.
Bunselpower
Heh, Cingrani is worth a flyer for next year. They knew he wouldn’t pitch this season and he had a good year last year. The ERA is high but the FIP shows that maybe he pitched better than the results he got. Maybe not, but heck, he’s not keeping anyone out.
Who knows, he might be the Cecil insurance for next year.
echozulu88
Cingrani will be a free agent this off-season.
DarkSide830
that was a wonderful trade lol

‘Cause Patrick Wisdom turned into an All-Star for the Rangers, amrite?
JFactor
? I’m sorry? Is Wisdom doing any better or something?
Dad
Too bad they didn’t have him give Carpenter some hitting advice before they broke him off
JFactor
Carpenter has a .361 OBP since returning from injury….
Plot Thickens
Carpenter in August. 723 OPS. 91 OPS+. NOT WHAT THEY NEED FROM HIM.
fourth_dimension
Sorry Jeffy…..no dice……he is .220 .356 .356 .712 since his return with a 95 wRC+. That is not what he is being paid to do. Walks….smalks…….zzzzzzz……how about damage? He is not doing that.

Two Cardinals stories in a row?
What is going on here?

No Yankees were hurt in the past 10 minutes.

That’s a shame, I thought he’d have a nice run as a utility outfielder/infielder with pop. Figured the few ABs he had were the Cards were the first of many. Figured he’d be a Chad Pinder type potentially.
The way the tweet is worded, “granted his release,” almost sounds like Robinson asked for the release. That would make sense … too many OF’ers in the MLB and upper minors.
mack423
Ah, just realized he would have been a minor league free agent if not on the 40-man at the end of the year. So if not on the 40-man, there’s no way he’d be with the org.
