This season has been a struggle for the Marlins, who have posted the National League’s worst record (45-81) and scored the second-fewest runs in baseball. Third baseman/outfielder Brian Anderson has been one of the few bright spots in their lineup, but his season may have come to an end Friday. Anderson suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand after Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez hit him with a 93.9 mph fastball, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com was among those to report.
If we have seen the last of Anderson in 2019, it’ll go down as a second straight effective campaign for the 26-year-old. In his first extensive major league action a year ago, Anderson slashed .273/.357/.400 with 11 home runs and a 113 wRC+ across 670 plate appearances. He has logged almost matching production on a per-PA basis this season, having recorded a 114 wRC+ over 520 attempts. Thanks in part to a red-hot August, he’s a .261/.342/.468 hitter with 20 homers and a .207 ISO – up 80 points from 2018.
The Marlins will recall outfielder Austin Dean from Triple-A New Orleans to replace Anderson, per Andy Slater of 640 The Hurricane. Dean has racked up a combined 210 PA with the Marlins dating back to last season, though he has limped to a .216/.252/.352 line with six HRs in that span.

Your carpal bones are the most vulnerable bones in your body as a hitter. MLB needs to figure out some remedy for it and add some practical protection for the area, without it being a nuisance.
YankeesBleacherCreature
You can mandate that all batters wear batting gloves with extra top padding. It will be a tough sell to MLBPA and some players will just take their chances.
sleepyfloyd
It’s called baseball, players have dealt with it for over 100 years.
Quit griping and go play video baseball.

Catchers have also dealt with getting run over and they had to change the rule to protect the catchers. MLB is currently looking to expand netting to protect the fans. I’m not saying they need to mandate new equipment requirements, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did to protect the players further. They are clearly looking to improve the product on the field and injuries does not make the product better.
It does remind me of those oversized batting helmets some players wore. Goofy as ****!
PixelMelonz
What a toxic attitude. Why is it a bad thing to want to protect our athletes so they can continue to be productive during their already short careers just to inflate your man ego?
Climb off that tall horse and get over yourself.

MLBPA won’t settle for another piece of equipment that may impact the batter in a negative way. Even if they added extra padding, in the heat, those gloves would just smell horrible after one game. Plus, they will become too bulky and uncomfortable to wear. They have made vast improvements on the shin guards and have made them more comfortable and durable.
But you are suggesting to basically bubble wrap these players for the sake of a chance of injuries. I just think the league has allowed themselves to have more injury prone kids play the game. Baseball players are basically vegetarians or vegans. Any meat that they consume, has a chance of having some sort of banded substance in them. Beef for example, steroids are used to “beef” up these steeds so profits are bigger. Player consumes the beef, gets tested, it shows up in the report/test. Downfall of players eating “healthy” foods and not some meat foods, a lot of meets have the minerals and proteins to help the body to stay “fit and firm”. Don’t get me wrong, a salad has its benefits, but meats have so much daily nutrition and players are neglected by it.
I hear they are testing organic meats, but I wonder how much of “cut throat” it would be to ranches and farms. I think that is why it’s been hard for organic chicken, beef, and pork have been very hard to process. I see organic eggs being sold and can see that being successful since eggs are reasonable as unit price compared to meat products.
And yes, I know there is plenty of minerals and such in sea food. But not all players like the texture of sea food. I just wish players where able to eat like some of the greats the game has ever known. Satchel Paige,Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, and many more ate steak and drank beer while playing a game at the highest level. Any many had great careers!

A lot of misinformation on this thread. First, they attempted to make gloves to protect batters, specifically for Jeff Bagwell. He stance was conducive to getting hit in the hand. They didn’t work out so well, and no, nothing to do with smell ( they wouldn’t keep it on all game like a Mitt.) Second, someone getting pinched for steroids, it ain’t because of beef.

Dont you only have 4 metacarpals. I broke my 4th which was under my pinky finger. Your thumb doesn’t have one i believe
TradeAcuna
Metacarpals are the long bones between your knuckles and the wrist bones. There are only 5 per hand. There are 8 wrist bones. The one closest to the pinky is the hamate bone, which is the culprit for most wrist fractures after getting HBP.

just exile VV from baseball now. this is at least the second time this year he’s injured someone, and he cant even help his own darn team.

Conner 757 vs 810 ops isn’t 80
spinach
His OPS rose year to year from .757 to .810 and his wRC+ only rose from 113 to 114. Shows just how ludicrously offensive numbers have gone up.

That’s 2 in the last month Philly, that’s enough now..

Always nice when something like that happens to the only player in the whole organization that matters…also, even though his defensive position is a question, especially at Marlins Park, and not sure if the ballpark is conducive to his power, but Dean doesnt strike out much, and I could see him hitting somewhere else, if not here. Also, it’s not like they’re running gold gloves out in the OF, so let’s see what he does with hopefully his first extended look
