The Braves will install veteran righty Mark Melancon as their closer, manager Brian Snitker told reporters including Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter). He finished out tonight’s game, though it did not come in a save situation.
Melancon was one of three veteran relievers acquired by the Atlanta organization at the trade deadline. At the time, it did not seem terribly likely he’d receive a shot at ninth-inning work. Shane Greene took the inside track to the gig, with fellow newcomer Chris Martin and incumbent Luke Jackson also potentially in the mix.
Things have changed rather quickly. Greene and Martin have been shaky. The Braves don’t want to turn things back over to Jackson. And Melancon has been steady. It’s only a handful of outings, but the Atlanta org is obviously looking for a steadying presence. Perhaps it shouldn’t be seen as a surprise that the experienced late-inning hand has already grasped the reins.
Melancon hasn’t functioned as a steady closer since early in the 2017 season, but he has racked up 183 career saves. Though he has been more steady than dominant of late, carrying a 3.29 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 since the start of the 2018 season, the 34-year-old surely won’t be cowed by the prospect of handling the high-leverage spots.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Braves’ late-inning relief situation shakes out down the stretch. Snitker did not commit to permanently utilizing Melancon in the closer’s role, though he did indicate that the veteran will be trusted with the job for some time to come. The club is obviously willing to switch things up on the fly, but will presumably hope to settle into some kind of established approach before the postseason arrives.

Why hasn’t MLBTR made a post yet about that old hip hop song Milkshake? You know the one I’m talking about. It goes: “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.” I wanna read about it. I know it would be unusual for this site but I visit this site more than any other and it would just be a lot easier for me to read about it here than have to go and search for it somewhere else. It would really save me a lot of time so I hope they get on that. Thanks. I appreciate it.

I take it as mocking the pointless drivel many posters think is worth sharing, exemplified by the OP JayRyder.
There is also a chance that post is evidence of psychopathy. Or autism. Or perpetual living in his parents basement for at least 40 years. I could go on, but then I might reveal my own insanity.
Rocket32
I agree. So inconvenient having to go elsewhere to read about such an iconic song. It would be perfect if we could read about it here instead. Brilliant idea.
Perksy
Your giants messed up by not moving Smith and Bum and the deadline. They got a little too excited with the winning streak. It’s not a good team. Had a chance to really get some good prospects for the impending free agents.
JayRyder
Or, Resign both of them in the off-season. And make another run next year. Add some free agents. Another year of minor league seasoning for the top prospects. And make another run. With a fully healthy Cueto. Without melancon contract on the books. Maybe add another starter in free agency.
Everybody knew this was gonna take seasons to build up. Why does everything have to be the Astros and tear down for 5 seasons. ???
southi
And why would trading them for prospects eliminate the Giants to sign them during the off season??
Dodgethis
Very rare for a team to sign a guy they traded the previous season. It just doesn’t happen.
TLB2001
Aroldis Chapman. I would say the fact that it doesn’t happen is more a function of teams in sell more at the deadline aren’t usually in buy mode the immediately following offseason.

Hreene will dial in….in 2020. He doesnt adjust to change well.
His stuff is very good though, the late life on his fastball and slider are nasssty.
He is not the sub 2 ERA closer he showed thr last 4 months, but he should be part of a good 1-2 punch w Melancon next year as well
mark1125
I don’t know…..outside of 3 months this year he has been subpar. I think he is a useful pen arm but he isn’t going to be a difference maker long term IMO.
Xavier Blaine
LOL. There goes your division lead Atlanta!
Xavier Blaine
Don’t let the stats fool you. He was only good because Bochy put him in low stress situations the majority of the time! Any time the game was on the line and he pitched he didn’t deliver. So glad we got rid of him and Atlanta fans I feel sorry for you!
bucnole31658
Considering he only lost the lead twice all season and was damn effective minus a 2-3 weeks run late May early June. I’d say your opinion doesn’t match the facts
macdaddy96
Lol the facts are he rarely was put in with a lead to begin with. He’s hot trash and we’re glad your braves took him and that contract
coldbeer
A 2-3 week garbage run for a reliever gets you sent down, traded, waived or released. Cmon now.
Down with OBP
Yes. That releasing of Diaz by the Mets was rather typical. And when the cubs sent down Kimbrel no one batted an eye.
brat922
That is untrue! Melancon pitched well end of 2018 season and great this season. He didn’t get credit in SF (most of the fans just whined about his salary because he was injured and it took a while to come back). It wasn’t fair! He is a closer and was close enough to reach-earning his closer role, but as he rehabbed, Will Smith happened. Kind of sad but that is baseball. He’s great in clubhouse, funny, used to come on Twitter more but the SF fans were mean. Loved him!!

I still don’t really understand why Atlanta picked up the $14 mil plus he’s owed next year
Gmen777
As a Giants fan I was in stunned disbelief the Braves not only gave us a prospect of use but also picked up the entire contract
bofarr
Tristan Beck is not a prospect, he’s a lottery ticket with a bad back. If he ever gets healthy he might be a bullpen arm. The Braves essentially just took the contract.
Dixon Miaz
Lol. Tristen Beck has the potential as a mid rotation starter. He was first Round talent. But teams were scared away from his a price tag and injury history. If he can stay healthy, he can be a legitimate MLB starter. He’s definitely a prospect
jeb39999
Kinda sounds like they would win the lottery if he stayed heathy… just saying, he isn’t in the high minors with a clear history of success so by definition he is still just a lottery ticket type player not a sure thing.
bravesfan88
The Braves are thinking Melancon could stabilize the backend of their pen for this year and next. So, they view he’s certainly worth it..
As far as his role as the closer, they have been quoted as saying altering his usage rates and sequencing, and they think he can rediscover the form that made him a reliable and steady closing option..
So far, the results have been good, albeit with an extremely small sample size, but his cutter does look sharp, he’s hitting his spots extremely well, and he’s been pitching with an obvious game plan to attack hitters that’s been nearly unhittable thus far..
I certainly hope he continues to work out, because it would be huge for the Braves to finally lock down their closer’s role moving forward.
They have the defense, they certainly have the offense, they’re intelligent running the bases and have speed, and their starting rotation is taking shape and has been a steady presence. All that’s left is for their pen to pick it up, and especially that closer’s role get defined.
Now, I think they have the pieces to be successful, it’s just finding the right roles for everyone, and using them in the best spots. However, with the addition of the new guys, combined with the extra depth in AAA, that Weigel, Minter, and Walker can bring when they’re on too. The Braves should be set up nicely to finish off their division, and position themselves for an interesting playoff run..
Well, it’ll only be interesting as long as they can avoid the Dodgers..lol The Dodgers are clearly the class of the NL, and they will ultimately be the Braves real demise..sadly..lol
steelerbravenation
First off in order for their to be depth in AAA the guys down there actually have to be good. Wiegel I think is gonna be a good bullpen piece in the future I don’t know if it’s right now but I definitely see him growing into that role. Walker to me is just like everybody else nothing about him impressed me & Minter just flat out stinks.
Nego
Melancon back in the closers role really lasted long….
That $14 mil could have been used elsewhere next year. It’s not like they are a huge market team with money to blow
RLD
This is 1 game. The season isn’t over. Now the next 6 games will be big. I do think AA made a big mistake not signing Kimbrel and I also think AA or at least the Braves front office are liars. I read that the Braves would be interested in Kimbrel on a 2-3 year deal, not a 5 or 6. 3-yrs. at $43 million is kinda cheap in baseball money. Then you take the $14 million from Melancon’s contract. We got 3 pitchers for 1. Will all 3 of them be worth 1 of Kimbrel?
bravesfan1970
Kimbrel has an ERA above 5. He has 2 blown saves and is on the DL. I think the Braves feel OK about their decision not to sign him.
steelerbravenation
Can’t be any worse than what we been throwing out there
What happened to Greene & Martin they have been terrible
I think Melancon has a shot to be good he has experience and is a grounbalk machine & Braves infield is great. Defense as a whole is great.
SecsSeksSecks
I know Shane Greene was due for some regression but I have been surprised by how quickly he fell. I think he has already blown at least 3 saves this month. I support the decision to go with Melancon for now because every game counts this late in the season and Melancon has been fine since we got him. I do think if Melancon starts slipping and Greene gets back to his old self in the mean time we should give it back to Greene. Hey… At least it will save the Braves some cash next season. Every save will boost Greene’s arbitration value and Melancon’s salary is already locked in for next year. The Braves need to save every bit they can to pay Melancon his $14 mill next year.
chippahawk
Relievers are odd humans, you never know what youre going to get. (Hence, why you shouldn’t give up too much for them or sign them to big deals or long-term nonetheless..)
They seem to be comfortable in their current situations/surroundings and taking them out of it turns them into instant fish out of water until they regain that comfort and confidence again.
The anxiety is insurmountable in new environments I assume, but putting too much faith in a newly required reliever is asking for disappointment.
(Truth be told and case in point, thought the nationals picking up barraclaugh this offseason would be huge, now he’s looking for a job..)
Braves BP is over filled with 7th and 8th inning pitchers right now. Hopefully they get it figured out soon.

I know he’s a troll, but I find AOG’s comments very comforting. According to him, the Braves are so good they have a 98% playoff chance and a 6.5 game lead in one of MLB’s toughest divisions and THEY AREN’T EVEN TRYING TO WIN.
WAH1447
We take on all of melancon’s contract but wouldn’t sign kimbrel, when he is essentially making just about the same. I bet he is hurt right now but man I much rather him coming out there in the 9th than anyone else in the pen
TradeAcuna
Meh, Kimbrel wanted a multi year deal but he is not worth committing too. Kimbrel or not, the Braves will either miss the playoffs or be another first round exit for them.
Personally, just call up Wilson and let him close.
The direction they go in the off season will be very telling for the true goals of the organization. If they go the cheap, prospects ho-arding route again, they will face the same issues next year. Zero pitching everywhere.
tomv824
Hey John Coppolella , you got fired for cheating, go somewhere else and stop be so jealous someone else is running the team you built. Next time don’t cheat.

I concur
Joseph12992
You would think Melancon stole some Giants fans girl with the way they talk about him. He has a 3.29 ERA in his last 87.2 innings. He has been fine.
brandons-3
ERA can be misleading. Truth be told, he didn’t live up to the contract. However, context matters here. The Giants were coming off a playoff berth where they lost a competitive series to the Cubs. Melancon was supposed to be the missing piece that would shore up the bullpen and keep the Giants competitive. As we now know, the Giants problems are more than just one bad contract, but because of what Melancon represents there’s some more animosity there.

exactly! lol…funny how we all spin things based on what teams we’re fans of
bravesfan
We have no choice… we really don’t. We go out and give up a heck of a lot for Martin and Greene, neither of which have shown that they can actually pitch! They have been brutal for us! I have said this a ton and every single braves fan has disagreed with me, we gave up far too much for those guys! Neither have ever been any good until this year and Martin wasn’t exactly awesome to begin with. How do you trade away the talent we did for the trash that we got?!! It’s been an epic fail by braves mgmt so far
GarryHarris
I don’t think the Braves gave up a heck of a lot for Shane Greene. Neither players were in the Braves plans.
steelerbravenation
Not the point if they were in our plans it’s the point he could have used them in deals to get better returns.
But in AA’s defense which I can’t believe I am typing that nobody thought Greene would fall off that fast & hard
He also had a market so he had to outbid other teams. For him & Martin actually.
bravesfan
Bingo! Spot on. It’s the returns we could have gotten for these players which should have been far greater. All 3 bullpen guys were not exactly good pick ups. Mm has been struggling ish in recent years, Greene has never had s good year cept this year and Sam’s with Martin (and hes a rental)
steelerbravenation
I agree we gave up to much for Allard but not for Greene with the year he was having. At the deadline you pay for what a guy is doing now in the offseason you pay for what he has done. They had to overpay at that point.
If AA did his job in the offseason and put a bit more focus on the bullpen maybe he wouldn’t have had to overpay.
bravesfan
Agreed. 100% agreed! If he simply did his job this offseason, well said
DTD
The Braves basically gave up nothing at all to get them. They were players that had either already sucked in the bigs or were never gonna be anything more than AAA depth.
bravesfan
DTD… what an absolutely ridiculous and stupid comment. Both guys are only 21 years old. They have plenty of time to develop into really good to elite players. To say that giving them up because they “already sucked in the bigs or wouldn’t be more than AAA” is an absolutely insane and completely idiotic thing to say. We gave up 2 21 year old top prospects, one who has been in the top 100 for years and the other who could be in that discussion as well. You are being short minded by looking at their current struggles rather than look st their true potential. We gave up a fortune, and tonight’s game proved we gave up those assets for trash
Dustin Michels
Wentz has had two awesome starts for Erie and looks like that mid rotation SP potential imo.
Mendoza Line 215
I think that Mark Melancon will do well in Atlanta.
He got off to a rough start In SF and I think that the money went to his head.
Then he got hurt and when he came back the Giants were a bad team.
Then he became mediocre because he is a good competitor and they did not need him because they were not winning.
He was being paid a lot of money, too much money for his performance.
He will not be the shutdown that he was with the Pirates but he is the best that Atlanta has.He was a money pitcher with the Pirates and he may very well be that now.
If he is a good closer for the Braves he will be worth every penny.
brat922
WTG, Mark!! Go get ‘em!

Braves Bullpen…aka…where talent goes Awol. There’s some bad juju voodoo spirits roaming that bullpen or something. Need to light some candles or perform some type of spiritual cleansing down there…gotta exhaust all options at this point
jints1
All of the talking heads were demanding the Braves get Greene. The Twins were told they had to fortify their bullpen. Moving from one team to another entails some risk. Is Melancon the answer, I doubt it.
Melchez
As a Tiger fan, I was relieved Greene was traded. He was having a great year, but you knew it wouldn’t last. I think he’ll do well… it just takes him time to get back into it. He was traded to the Tigers, he fell apart. They moved him to the pen, he started out slow and then did well. They moved him to closer, he struggled and then he got it. He was traded… hopefully he gets back into his groove. He doesn’t handle change well.
Sid Bream
There is a massive difference closing games for Detroit who are not in playoff contention, than pitching for Atlanta who are in playoff contention-there is a thing-it is called pressure, some players can handle it and others cannot. Greene hasn’t got elite stuff, at least Melancon has a very good track record and he’s also got a decent post season record, Greene has no post season experience. As far as I am concerned I didn’t like trading for Martin or Greene, at least with Melancon he has 183 career saves and I feel pitching to McCann will also help. We made a massive mistake allowing Suzuki to go and also Anibal, even though Flowers is a good defender I prefer a better hitter at catcher. I am hoping that Melancon will do a good job.
tiredolddude
Well said. As a Pirates fan, I root for the guy. Just a good guy and hope he shines for the Braves
steelerbravenation
I feel the Braves need to develop Bryce Wilson into a closer
Next year we already will have Melancon & Greene in the bullpen bring up Wilson and let him develop for a year in the bullpen and if he takes then make him the closer in 2021
Melchez
Wait, Bryce wilson cant be closer… he has no experience in pressure situations.
Sid Bream
@Melchez It would appear that you have a comprehension disorder.

Sunday’s game will be big, wait and see how the Braves play. The games with NY and LA will tell how the Braves will be the rest of the year. If they lose 4 out of those 6, it’s going to be bad the rest of the year. Braves do tend to play better with the better teams.

Snit found his closer… Luke Jackson lol. My guess is the pen is so snake bitten now that Snit is clueless and doesn’t trust Greene or Melancon.
