The Braves announced that they have designated righty Wes Parsons for assignment. His roster spot was needed for the club’s previously reported signing of Adeiny Hechavarria, which is now official.
Parsons, 26, converted to a full-time relief role this season and has had success at limiting earned runs. But that only tells a limited portion of the story.
In limited MLB action, Parsons has had trouble limiting walks (7.6 per nine), getting swings and misses (6.9% swinging-strike rate), and generating grounders (as he always has in the minors). That’s a recipe for disaster, which explains why the Braves haven’t used him more in the bigs despite a 3.52 ERA in 15 1/3 innings this year.

This is a terrible loss? Why? He’s been pitching just fine…. roster space for a bad SS? I don’t understand the logic. We don’t have room in that bad bullpen to simple DFA one of the few guys who’s pitched decent enough. Better be able to trade him for something, cause it would be absolutely insane to lose him for nothing
Zach725
Parsons is 26 and hasn’t looked good in the majors this year. He doesn’t have great stuff either and is a pure reliever. The braves can easily replace him.
bravesfan
Hasn’t looked good? He’s been one of the better pitchers in the bullpen lol!!! Hey, I agree that he can be replaced (although the braves prove they can’t find good replacements) and his stuff isn’t elite… but our bullpen can’t afford to knock off a guy like him. Our bullpen is brutal.
That said, if he’s going out the door, got to think he’s good enough to get something in return for him.
braves25
It is after July 31. The Braves will not be getting anything at all for him!
Zach725
He’s pitched 15.1 innings. He’s walked 13 guys, struck out 12, put up an FIP of 6.09, and his stuff hasn’t looked good
TheFixIsIn
The Orioles should pick him up. They are in desperate need of pitching help.
TradeAcuna
Given how the Braves have one of the worst pitching in baseball everywhere, kind of silly to want any of their scrap junk.
todd76
Is that you again Coppy?
bravesiowafan
Just our expert Braves troll
DarkSide830
Miami. basically whoever is first in line on waivers.
bravesfan
The thing is, he’s one of Atlanta’s best pitchers, so we shouldn’t have scrapped him. He’s a solid pickup for any team
braves25
@bravesfan
What Wes Parsons have you watched? He has pitched 15 innings and has more walks them strikeouts…in what world is that considered good? Or solid for that matter?
tomv824
This tells me they are concerned that Swanson is progressing well and they don’t trust Camargo.
braveshomer
Whys this? pickup Hechevaria and call up Bryce Wilson…but dfa Parsons then option Carmago and Duvall…why did we have to get rid of 3 players to take on 2? Not trying to be sarcastic, truly don’t understand how a lot of this works
BravesNomad
Because the Braves needed a 40 man roster spot. Duvall and Johan are both on the 40 as is Wlson, so a player had to be DFA’d to make room for Hech. That’s why the moves were made in the order they were.
DarkSide830
shouldve just dfaed duvall
bravesiowafan
Duvall still retains some value
BravesNomad
Duvall still had options remaining as well, hence why he and Johan were sent down to AAA.. Alex said in an interview that this allows the team to keep it’s depth while moving on from someone who didn’t seem to fit future plans.
jonnymac2for1
@darkside how did the DFA’d on Duvall work out for you? Glad you’re not running things.
braveshomer
gotcha thanks
jdgoat
This will be a nice pickup for one of the rebuilding teams. He shouldn’t make it too far down the wire.
jonnymac2for1
If you’re a Braves fan, don’t you have to admit that the team knows more than the fans? The team has to stick by the moves that they make. If they sign a bad contract, they are the ones that have to pay for it. The fans can play armchair GM all day and 2nd guess. Really dumb to not acknowledge that.
