The Blue Jays have released utilityman Alen Hanson, as per the Twitter page of the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Hanson struggled to a .187/.232/.271 slash line over 180 PA for Buffalo this season.
It’s been an all-around rough year for Hanson, who had only a .392 OPS over 48 Major League plate appearances for the Jays before the club outrighted him off their 40-man roster in May. Hanson was part of the three-player trade package Toronto acquired from the Giants for Kevin Pillar soon after the start of the season, though Hanson didn’t produce in what little playing time he received in a Jays uniform.
After receiving some top-100 prospect recognition while coming up in Pittsburgh’s farm system earlier in the decade, Hanson hasn’t delivered on that promise over 625 MLB plate appearances (.232/.266/.368) for the Pirates, White Sox, Giants, and Blue Jays from 2016-19. Hanson is still only 26 and has multi-positional ability, so it’s possible he could get another look on a minors contract from another team interested to see if he could be a late bloomer.

Dodgers. All Star 2021.

The Pirates refused to trade Hanson, Harold Ramirez/Resse McGuire, and Nick Kingham for 18 months of David Price. They could have done so much more damage in 2014 & 15 if they weren’t so cheap

3 of those 4 players were all blue jays before this release of Hanson
Goku the Knowledgable One
1. Cole
2. Taillon
3. Polanco
4. Hanson
5. Glasnow
6. Bell
7. Kingham
8. Luis Herredia

10. Reese McGuire
H.M. Stetson Allie
All those prospects, and GM just finds a way to screw it up

Freddy H-Not sure what your point is other than just being negative.
bross16
Why would you put Bell an Taillon on this list if you’re trying to make them look bad
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I get the point here is to make the Pirates look stupid, but you are also claiming that the Rays are also stupid.
Because on no planet were they going to take that deal over the one that included Willy Adames.

When Hanson joined the Giants last year, he had a great first month displaying speed and some power. After that month it was all downhill.
Monkey’s Uncle
He’s always shown some speed and some power. The problem is that he’s also usually shown little ability to hit for contact and little ability to be useful in the field.

Please get your facts straight, don’t reply unless you really know
sleepyfloyd
I don’t understand how casual unknowledgeable fans are so surprised when any player either comes up or changes leagues and has a hit month till the league catches up to them. Amazing they can wonder what happened

Great trade haul for Pillar.
maggot
Yeah another stellar move by Atkins. He’s a shrewd one
bross16
Do you actually believe that Pillar deserved a big return?
jimmertee
Big return no, quality return yes. Pillar plays stellar defense and is consistent with his 15hrs 60+Rbis every year. Any major league manager woul pencil a centre fielder in everygame like Pillar.
Pitchers love the guy too.
He’d be worth a very good prospect and a throw. All they got was Hanson who can’t play in the Majors, Derek Law who wouldn’t be on a chamopionship team and a very low level lottery ticket that may or may not ever see the majors. Jays got fleeced on this deal.
It is common knowledge in baseball circles that the Blue Jas don’t scout other clubs minor leagues. Most of the scouting is done by Atkins on his laptop. Kinda like Riccardi operated. It is based on arrogance and beleiving that you are smarter than everyone else. It’s not going to work longterm.

Jfc does anyone take you seriously. First off , pillar sucks. A .268 obp this year is disgusting. His bat is atrocious and he isnt even playing cf anymore which speaks volumes to his defence. Oh and how is your prediction about bichette working out scouteyes. Good christ I wouldn’t have you scout out a coffee shop. You are an idiot.
bross16
His defense is not good. Look at his metrics. Just because he made a few diving catches doesn’t mean he’s amazing defensively
jimmertee
It’s a long season. Just wait for it. At the end of the season Bichette will have quited down becuase the pitchers have adjusted. If you look at Bichette’s history he can go into a funk at the plate for nonths in a row. That is only going to increase at the MLB level. Be patient. A few games against KC and the Oriloes don’t count for anything.
As far as Pillar goes, he is stellar. FYI He is playing with a hip injury sitution and he is still better than any Blue Jays Centre fielder.
One more thing, there is never any reason to insult anyone on this site. Ever. Let’s be professional and show more maturity. Thank you. #Scoutseyes

Pillar has the 5th worst wRC+ in all of baseball. His defense is slightly above average but that in no way makes up for his inept bat. The fact you think he is good or held any massive trade value just shows how little you know. Also, you are arrogant and I have no issue calling you out for it. Anybody who knows as little as you do and continues to spew out trash that you were a scout is laughable.

There was no reason to trade Kevin Pillar a week into the season.
sffblddt
All Toronto wanted was the pitcher they received. The rest was moving salary to Toronto’s books.
jdgoat
It’s pretty obvious, I don’t know why some people just refuse to acknowledge that.
its_happening
Pillar’s salary was removed and then immediately handed to Randal Grichuk and then some. If that was the motivating factor I would have rather kept Pillar.
johns-11
Is Brito still playing lol, he was god awful too.
GB85
Jays are really on a role tradewise this year.
Metsfan9
He never really fit in with the Bisons, always sat alone on the bench. He had swag but not much skill
jorge78
So much for top 100 prospects.
its_happening
Had to happen. Blue Jays have some more dead weight to cut. Consumer confidence is at a low for Blue Jays management unfortunately.
jdgoat
Can’t believe this guys was a top 100 prospect at one point.
jaysfan77
At least it wasn’t Derek Fisher….yet
maxorange33
It’s pretty evident that Shapiro/Atkins don’t have any negotiating or evaluation skills, except that they convinced someone that they should be hired in the first place. I can’t help but think of the Moneyball scenes depicting Shapiro’s “style” against Billy Beane. Beane is shown to pull every head game and trick in the book to get an upper hand on other teams while Shapiro, out of complete cluelessness refers to an assistant!
jimmertee
Yah.
its_happening
Even if Atkins is good at scouting talent, and that is now questioned thanks to his assessments of Grichuk and Fisher, that does not mean he can negotiate.
Case in-point; what the Jays got for both Phelps and Hudson in separate trades versus what Texas got from Atlanta for Chris Martin. Brutal.
