The Athletics are set to select the contract of first baseman/outfielder Seth Brown from Triple-A Las Vegas, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. The club already has a full 40-man roster, so it’ll need to make a corresponding move.
The 27-year-old Brown will take the 25-man spot of outfielder Stephen Piscotty, who’s going on the injured list. Brown is now set for his major league debut four years after joining the Athletics as a 19th-round pick in 2015.
Currently in his first year of Triple-A ball, Brown is among many Pacific Coast League hitters who have feasted on opposing pitchers. He has mashed a whopping 37 home runs in 500 plate appearances at the level this year. The lefty-swinging Brown’s power has helped him to a terrific .297/.352/.634 batting line, which is 25 percent better than the league-average output, per FanGraphs’ wRC+ metric.
bigballerbrand99
Not discrediting the validity of his Triple-A performance, but I think websites use minor league wRC+ a little too much. There’s no park factors or age curve accounted for in minor league wRC+, which I think is hugely important (thought not in this particular case)
arc89
His average and OBA is the same throughout his minor days. His power is in the 20 range. Nobody thinks he will be a top power hitter but if he can hit around 20 homers a year he would be serviceable.
jonnyzuck
of course wRC+ is far from perfect when discussing minor leagues I think it’s still important to include because it at least adjusts for the league environment and gives you some context as to how impressive the stats are

But Dustin Fowler?!?!?
Screamer
Don’t know why they are avoiding Fowler unkess they don’t want him
sacball
Fowler’s apparently a liability in the OF now….also, you’d expect his line to be more monstrous, given the hitting environment and prior MLB exp, instead it’s rather meh…
sacball
If they needed an outfielder, they would have called up Bolt
Asfan0780
Surprised they called up brown, having great seaaon but also just turned 27 so not really a prospect. Also hes played some outfield but mainly DH and 1b this season. They shouldve traded fowler for something at deadline , he could help some needy outfield team than be stuck in AAA
athleticsnchill
Seth Brown is a corner outfielder, not a first baseman. However, to get him AB’s we played him at first base since our outfield was full.

Kid has benefited from cal league for his HR #’s ( a lot less power in non juiced Texas league) and now juiced ball PCL with big strike out numbers and defensively limited. Good DH 4A type .. typical Oakland player
sacball
His Texas line is nothing to scoff at…
athleticsnchill
Not as many home runs, but 38 doubles in a pitchers league.
sacball
exactly! and he didn’t have to repeat the level..
athleticsnchill
And while he has 37 home runs and probably benefits from the environment in the PCL he still has 29 doubles.
athleticsnchill
He’s not defensively limited. He’s a COF playing first base right now. Unless you’re about to tell me all COF’s are defensively limited. lol

The a’s selected him because of the need for a left handed bat in the lineup. Whoever they bring up will sit on the bench a lot. Could be a platoon for Davis so he can sit and get healthy.
sacball
This is what I’m thinking..Laureano is a couple of rehab games away and the OF is covered…he’s probably going to platoon DH with Davis for the time being..
athleticsnchill
I’m wondering if Davis ends up going on the 60 day IL. He just hasn’t been right, and they may just want him to rest to protect their investment.
sacball
my guess is Davis has some sort of torn labrum in his hip…his lack of generating anything even to the warning tracking is truly alarming (his last HR was at the benefit of the extremely warm air that night)…Mark Canha looked similar right before his hip surgery.
mikevm3
Is he related to Seth Green? Ok that was terrible, I’ll leave now.
