AL Notes: O’s, Davis, Yanks, Torres, A’s, M. Chapman

By Connor Byrne | August 8, 2019 at 1:58am CDT

A quick look around the American League…

  • Not only did Baltimore drop an embarrassing 14-2 decision to New York on Wednesday, but there was an all-too-public dugout altercation between struggling Orioles first baseman Chris Davis and manager Brandon Hyde during the game (video via Joe Trezza of MLB.com). Orioles hitting coach Don Long and injured slugger Mark Trumbo had to restrain Davis, whom the O’s then removed for a pinch-hitter. Hyde didn’t want to go into detail about it afterward, telling Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com and other reporters that the team will “keep it in-house.” He didn’t seem overly concerned about the matter, though, chalking it up to frustrations boiling over during what has been an adverse season. Davis wasn’t available for comment.
  • Second baseman Gleyber Torres was not in the lineup for the Yankees’ latest win, but the club’s not planning to put him on the injured list, per George A. King III of the New York Post. Although Torres exited the Yankees’ victories Sunday and Tuesday because of core issues, tests on the 22-year-old didn’t reveal anything serious, manager Aaron Boone said. Torres underwent an MRI for a sports hernia and other strains Wednesday, but no cause for his recent problems was discovered.
  • Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman has collected two hits and 19 strikeouts in his last 47 at-bats, perhaps because he’s dealing with knee and ankle issues. Chapman has been battling soreness in those spots, manager Bob Melvin revealed Wednesday (via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle). The superstar exited a game early with left ankle soreness on July 18, at which point he was slashing .279/.363/.522 on the season. Now, thanks to his ice-cold stretch, Chapman’s hitting .252/.340/.504.

You have to feel for the Birds of Baltimore. Buck Showalter is probably happy to be out of there.

It’s called a rebuild and every team goes through it. I don’t know if you’ve ever had the pleasure of Converse aiding with a major league baseball player but this stuff happens very often. It’s not abnormal to have a fistfight in a clubhouse. It’s abnormal that it gets out to the media and that’s where this went very bad. There’s a reason why when there’s a disagreement the people disappear to the tunnel because cameras are not allowed

Davis going after Hyde was the most passion I’ve seen out of the man in years. I could hit you with an “if only he brought that to the baseball field” line here but I’ll stop. I wonder if this ultimately leads to him being released though. You certainly can’t have your manager and Davis going at it in the dugout. Might be a little more tolerable if he weren’t the absolute worst player in the big leagues.

Hyde was in no danger though. If Davis would have taken a swing at him, he would have missed.

        Ladies & Gentlemen,

Kindly refrain from posting any more snarky remarks for 2019. Joe Says has just taken down the ‘Post of the Year Award’.

He’s also taken down Chris Davis. If a remark like this gets on radio, I’m not sure how Davis even shows up in public anymore.

        Kudos.

Davis isn’t much of a fighter. Heck most umpires punch him out 1 or 2 times a night and most of those guys are old.

At one point I thought “can’t they just call this game before a fan gets injured”? Some of those homers were crushed. As many homers as the Orioles give up they should have special netting all across that outfitted fence.

As for Torres, put him on the IL or sit him unto he’s 100% healed. Yanks can’t take their lead for granted but they should be overly cautious with their players the rest of the year. Hopefully they go into the playoffs with everyone healthy and ready to go.

Maybe contracts moving forward should have a clause where players are not allowing to physically attack their manager. In the real world Davis would be terminated and depending on the contract he would not see the rest of the money owed to him. Having tens of millions on the line would stop any player from even thinking about a confrontation.

Chris Davis and that contract is worth every ounce of energy to exercise any and all clauses.

You’re not going to void a 100 million dollar contract over an almost tussle with your manager. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Worst case scenario he’d get suspended. You can get in a fist fight with the other team and get less than a 2 week suspension. What clause are you going to put into a contract that would’ve possibly had Davis’ money in jeopardy?

KnicksCavs there’s no behavioral clause in Davis’ contract that he could’ve possibly been violated. He didn’t lay a finger on his manager. There’s nothing to exercise even if they wanted to. His money is guaranteed.

So now you have confirmed you have never been employed.

If you have a near-tussle with your superior/manager, you are fired with cause. Period. That was my first point about the real world. The real world people have to work. I’m sure it’s nice not to have to get up and work.

          ——————————————————————–

It’s a union contract. The contract stipulates how long players can be suspended. Otherwise, teams would be firing players all the time for any sort of trumped up charge.

That was a solid non sequitir to cap off the afternoon. My comment was directed towards KnicksCavs anyhow. Who did not know that these things were collectively bargained. There’s no behavior clause in a contract. There’s not going to be the MLBPA is one of the most powerful unions in the world. To suggest something like that is foolish.

Nice little tangent on working though…I hope that made you feel better.

Joe I laid that out with the MLBPA comment. The line you are referencing was me referencing what would happen in the real world vs. what happens in baseball. Then joblessBigz decided to take the real world out of context, and thus you missed it too.

If what I said previously was lost in the message I’ll do my best to clarify.

This year has just been a train wreck. I knew it was good to be bad but didn’t know it was going to be this bad. I for one think Hyde is a horrible manager though and unfortunately Davis needs to go at the end of the season. I know its going to kill them in a cap hit but its time to give up on him. I honestly have no clue how they can even become a good team. We need pitching but for years we have had garbage. When we were a good team we had a solid line up and good bullpen but SP held us back. Im only 35 but still dont think im going to see us win a WS in my lifetime

Unfortunately, teams seem to be reluctant to let these guys go. Maybe they think they can return, maybe they fear they’ll be embarrassed if Davis goes to another basement dweller and gets better, or maybe they are simply embarrassed that they signed the guy in the first place.

      But you’re not alone.

Miggy Cabrera has a 0.3 WAR over the past three years.

      Pujols has a -1.5 over 4 years.

      Davis -4.3 over 3 years.

Indeed. Since 2018, Chapman is fifth in the league in fwar. I’d say that’s superstar status. I really don’t feel like doing it for the zillionth time, so I’ll just respectfully say that rbi’s and batting average are a laughably poor measure of player performance.

As an A’s fan I’d say he was close before this cold stretch. He’s one of the league’s premier defenders and his bat started catching up to that elite defense. He was on the cusp of being a superstar, and if he can catch back up to where we are accustomed to seeing him offensively he could be by the end of the year.
