A doubleheader of games, a doubleheader of injuries for the Yankees today, as Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports that outfielder Aaron Hicks injured his elbow in Saturday’s nightcap with the Red Sox. Hicks will undergo an MRI tomorrow (Twitter link).
Of course, this news comes hand-in-hand with the news that Edwin Encarnacion will miss 3-5 weeks with a fractured wrist suffered in the first game of today’s double-tilt with Boston. Though it’s important to note that the extent of Hicks’ impairment isn’t yet known, followers of New York’s 2019 campaign have surely already been conditioned to expect the worst in regard to player prognosis.
Hicks–who already spent more than a month as an injured list resident this year following a preseason back injury–would not qualify as the 25th New York player to hit the IL this year, but his apparent injury is surely enough to cause handwringing for manager Aaron Boone. The outfielder, who is earning $8MM this season in the first year of a just-dried seven-year, $70MM pact, has been roughly league-average at the plate this year, with a 98 wRC+ in 251 at-bats (.229/.319/.440 slash line).
Kolukonu
Well, if Hicks ends up back on the IL, maybe this will finally give Frazier another chance.
dobsonel
If it doesn’t then they truly hate him.
Dorothy_Mantooth
They truly hate him
Melchez
Their excuse will be frazier doesnt play center.
robluca21
He doesn’t play anywhere hes a 24 year old DH who deleted all his Yankees related Instagram pictures when he was demoted.
Hopefully his time in scranton he used to better his defense and hopefully he did some growing up
PinstripedPride
No, it’s just that his defense needs more work. Every other outfielder is far superior on defense and at the least capable with a bat. I’m honestly surprised Frazier hasn’t been traded yet, but it’ll likely happen this winter
KnicksFanCavsFan
Frazier hasn’t been bad defensively historically. can’t explain why be had issues this year. thought maybe his vision was still bothering but you would think it would effect his hitting too but it’s not
or doesn’t seem so.
scarfish
Hahaha on ‘they truly hate him’. I just saw them on Tuesday and now this. Facepalm.
Polish Hammer
His defense needs work; something the Yanks failed to work on as he climbed up from AA to AAA and not when he dropped from the majors.
MZ311
He is not a CF. They have Maybin who can cover center. Frazier is an entitled little brat
Down with OBP
Gardner is far superior on defence?
rocky7
Hey guys…do you all watch the Yankees at all…Gardner and Tauchman will share center with the other likely playing left. Maybin isn’t a center fielder. Frazier may very well be called up for his offense and inserted either at DH or in the outfield rotation with Maybin, Tauch, and Gardy in Left. With both Hicks and Encarnacion down, and Judge obviously feeling the effects of that oblique issue he had, the Yankees need some punch in the middle to later part of the lineup….Frazier likely fills that.
Bottom line….all 4 will fill valuable rolls until/if Hicks returns.
As far as first is concerned, you won’t see Frazier there,,,,,likely try to fill with Ford until/if he shows he just can’t consistently hit.
Begamin
oh my lord, another?
robluca21
Tauchman and gardner have both been better than hicks this season.
With that being said a hicks injury is not ideal but for the time being gardner could slide into center and tauchman could play left with maybin off the bench…Frazier can DH and DJLM can play first.
The yanks have enough depth and a huge lead in the division
Roll
Robluca, becareful Louie will yell at you if you give any praise to Gardner 🙂
KnicksFanCavsFan
everytime someone mentions Gardner I here that music you heard everytime Jaws was about to attack someone. Do you hear it? Louiebeans is near.
Louiebeans
@KnicksFanCavsFan When they Post Season come and it[‘s over you’ll be praying they don’t bring Brett Garbage back. You’ve hear it here first.
KnicksFanCavsFan
If the Yanks chance of success in the playoffs then the Yanks are doomed. But since their fate DOESN’T rest on his shoulders only, I’ll just ignore your ramblings. you really got something going on about Gardener. unhealthy bruh.
srechter
Thank the powers that be that feeble-minded dopes like Louie don’t make roster decisions for the yanks.
Woodlawn
Hahaha Gardner. A 240 hitter who scares no one. Gardner is a waste and shouldn’t be in this team.
MZ311
So you’re admitting you don’t watch baseball and just here to troll
Deve
granted his ABs are frustrating, his defense and clutch hits over the year make up for it.
he deserves to be here
robluca21
Just lol @ referencing batting average in 2019
I dont care what his avg is . He plays superb defense is a premium baserunner…and hes roughly league average offensively
And that’s ok !
Louiebeans
Wait till they see him strikeout 10 times in the post season. They all will be singing a different tune.
robluca21
Remember his home run in the wild card game against the twins. That was a gardy party bat flip
Roll
Mentions strikeouts when Aaron Hicks has more strikeouts in about half the games. So what your saying is you rather watch hicks strike out 20 times and get paid more to do it?
srechter
Lol alright, Woodlawn, you beat Louie with the worst take on Gardner yet. You guys are impressively idiotic. Or trolling. Either way I get to laugh at stupidity, so it’s a win-win.
todd76
They may have a big division lead, but it’s going to be a quick 1st round exit on the postseason.
ColossusOfClout
Keep dreaming, wee todd.
srechter
Damn, what’s the point in even playing then? Wrap it up, guys. Todd said we’re losing first round.
SupremeZeus
Is this a dagger which I see before me.
Eightball611
At this pijt, ny is still ok
clepto
but your spelling not.
dlevin11
No time to panic. Yanks have a huge lead in the division and only play the St Pete Rays twice more this year. They can coast the rest of the season.
Bobbyray290
No one can “coast” in August.
ColossusOfClout
No coasting, they’re competing with Houston and Minny for homie field.
Alex hamilton
If Hicks hits the DL Yanks have plenty of replacements. Gardner, Tauchman, Maybin, Frazier all of which have out preformed Hicks at the plate.
Saw a stat the other day, Hicks .is a career .108 hitter with bases loaded.
KnicksFanCavsFan
weird stat which looks to be true according to Bref but it also says he has 12/12 w/k and 45 runs scored with 31 rbis. Weird.
ArianaGrandSlam
Yes he’s not doing so well in terms of batting but the game-saving catch the other day? We still need him overall.
Alex hamilton
Great defensive player, and yes, we still need him but we do have capable replacements.
timnellis
I know this article is about Hicks. But I for 1 read this article and my biggest take away was Encarnacion will only be out for 3-5 weeks instead of the remainder of the season. For this I am overjoyed. Encarnacion is the team leader in Homeruns and RBI’s. He is very crucial to lengthening the lineup.
ColossusOfClout
3-5 weeks for a broken wrist? That’s nonsense. Eddie will be out at least 6 weeks.
Bocephus
He’ll be no good for 2019.
costergaard2
Takeaways :
The Yankees don’t hate Frazier, they didn’t trade him for Ken Phelps.
Frazier or Tauchman is the opening day LF next year. Gardner (like Posada) could play another year, but will probably hang it up and be a Yankee for life. Unlike Posada, his last year has been productive, just not what he was earlier in his career. On most other teams, Gardner milks another year or two, on the Yankees, with so many young and inexpensive options, he is not here next year.
Cameron Maybin is fascinating. I have him penciled in as OF #4, unless the Yankees keep both Frazier and Tauchman. He won’t cost much, had a solid year, and fits in well here.
billysbballz
Gardner retires, Maybin will get a decent 2 yr contract for maybe 15 mill but not from Yanks, Tauchmann and Frazier will platoon in left alongside Stanton if he ever can stay healthy. Hicks in center with Florial the next man up. Judge in Right with Stanton occasionally giving him a rest.
Keeping Frazier was the right decision for the future and possibly now the present.
Bocephus
Florial will be lucky to be ready by 2022. The writings on the wall for Frazier’s exit this winter.
robluca21
2 years 15 million for maybin? I think he will be lucky to get a 1 year major league contract next year . Maybin is playing way over his head and is living g the babip life. Hes eventually going to fall back down to earth..hopefully it wont be told next season when hes not a yankee
PopeMarley
Maybin will be lucky to get a minor league deal.
srechter
This continues to stun me. Gardner has an ops of .784, well above his career .738 average. He’s been worth 2.7 bwar, third highest on the team. He’s not washed up whatsoever. This narrative is really interesting, though.
Louiebeans
Maybin – in Center field as an every day player. Come post season this guy is one gap hit from a tripe or an inside the park home run. I like his wheels and feel that his bat and legs in the post season could turn something on. A hit could turn into a double or a triple.
Frazier – I put him in Left Field I think his bat speaks for himself. .283 Average , .330 OBS. .513 slg . 743 ops and let the kid shine and play. He beats Brett Gardner in every category. I’m tired of hearing about his defense to me it’s fine.
Mike Tauchman – I bring him over Gardner
As for the Starting Pitching I’m not letting my starting Pitching start the games I’m going reliever all the way and having my starters come into the later part of the game. The Sp just isn’t holding up. Gotta think outside the box with this Starting Rotation.
In the off season Yankees need to spend and take chances on Starting Pitching. Over spend if you have to and try and
trade also. Don’t sit until the last second of July 31st.
Gerrit Cole,
Madison Bumgarner
Zack Wheeler
Cole Hamels
You have to make each one an offer
Louiebeans
In Case your wondering if Hicks come back and it’s the post season I take Gardner over Hicks right now. But right now the way everything is see my post above.
Louiebeans
I also wanted to add that yes anyone can win come the playoffs but have any of you seen what the Astros have done to their rotation over the years? Their rotation is unreal and they actually bolstered it before the trade deadline.
The Yankees on the other hand have done nothing at the deadline and they decided to bring back CC and Happ. Cashaman did not and I repeat did not plan very well for the starting rotation. They should be in a better position but they are not. It’s going to be one and done for the Yankees or once they hit the Astros you’ll be wishing they have went out and got SP.
When it’s all said and done to me they will not win a 2019 WS. Changes, people getting fired, a new pitching coach is needed. Yankees need to add 3 really go SP in the off season and they finally need to leard to walk away from these so call great clubhouse guys.
This team is built to win now and with a few FA from the market last year coulda put them over the edge. Let’s see if they make the same mistake next year.
robluca21
So you want Frazier and maybin in left and center when they are statistically two of the worst defensive outfielders on the yankees?
Just because maybin is fast doesn’t make him a good center fielder and just because he played a below average center field 5 to 8 years ago doesn’t mean he can play center field
robluca21
Also the way you just completely dismiss defense and act so arrogant to its relevancy is one of the reasons why all of us Yankees fans are hated..Frazier in left and maybin in center might be the dumbest suggestion I’ve seen on these comments..and that includes the brain dead trade proposals drummed up
Jesus christ
Louiebeans
Funny you say that cuz in 2018 Maybin played 20 games in Center Field and has a fielding percentage of .1000. Maybin has a car .989 fielding percentage outta 13 years. MIND BLOWING FACTS!
So when a guy has a .989 outfield percentage outta 13 years. Yes I’m going to trust him out in center field.
Your facts are nothing more then lash outs. Only cuz the Yankees haven’t played in out in CF makes you think or believe he cannot play CF.
Maybin can play Center Field just fine. You don’t think so cuz the Yankees haven’t played him there.
C Maybin .989 13 seasons
B Gardner .992 12 seasons
Yep that’s right =) I just shut you right the F up!
robluca21
Are you really that stupid ?
Fielding percentage is probably the worst thing you can use to measure the skill of an outfielder
Why dont you check the UZR , Ddefensive runs saved and dwar of the 2 players?
I so t understand how exactly you ” shut me up ” by telling me what their fielding percentage is . Nobody uses that anymore to evaluate defense
robluca21
Since 2015 lets lopk at defensive runs saved for the 2 players
Maybin

Pretty much no contest here .. now I know why everyone around here makes fun of you. You’re a an arrogant mindless jerk who thinks its 1987 when it comes to player evaluation
Roll
how dare you bring actual facts and stats that relate to the arguments.
srechter
“I just shut you the F up” (!!!!!)
With Louie there are two options. He’s either the most fantastically, stupendously, incredulously moronic commenter I’ve seen, or a fairly decent troll.
One is sad, the other is really sad. Either way we get to keep laughing at him.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Fielding percentage and Errors are poor metrics for defensive ability. You can put me in the OF for a handful of games (may god help the team) and I guarantee you that my fielding pctg. will be 1.000 because I won’t be quick enough or get reads to get to any balls going my way.
billysbballz

robluca21
You realize florial is getting owned in in the minor leagues ? He hasn’t played a game in triple a yet and you have him on the roster for 2020
My God…the stupidity absolutely hurts my soul
srechter
Robluca, it’s killing me too, man. This is why people hate yankees fans.
KnicksFanCavsFan
they’re not sending Happ to the bullpen. they just have to address whatever the problem is this year. he was great last year.
PopeMarley
Yea give him an aging elixir. Just admit it was a mistake to sign him.
PopeMarley
Wow, and people think I smoke too much ganja. Florial hasn’t played 1 day above A ball in which he’s hitting .233 with a OBP of .288 .653 OPS, and you’ve got him being a reinforcement for 2020. Mark my words Cole isn’t signing with the Yankees. The dumbest things you have here is Cole as a #4, Paxton as the ace, and moving Happ to the bullpen. You don’t even mention DD as a FA. All of it is just as ridiculously ignorant.
Roll
I think that is one heck of a lineup but that will be tough payroll wise unless the anks go over the top tier luxury tax. Right now they are at 170ish without signing FA or accounting for arp for 2020.
For signings, between Cole and Chapman you are going to prob going to be at min 40M bringing your total 210. Throw in Didi which i think since he is a solid fielder with an above average bat is probably at min 15 a year assuming he takes discount and at 225. Romine is a solid back up that could be a starter on some team so at min 5M and your at 230M.
For Arb,: you have Paxton is getting atleast 10M (he got 9 last year). This puts you at roughly 240 This does not include Kahnle arb (prob about 2 mil) nor Bird ( i expect they finally cut him). This also does not include 1st time arb for Judge, Sanchez, Green, or Mongomery. (im guessing a min 10M for these {i used ike davis 3M first time through and figured Sanchez and Judge would be a lot more than him}) and you are over 250M without getting any other depth or putting in pre arb salaries.
I lowballed a bunch by using the min i think will be taken but i think it will be highly unlikely it happens)
metsfan68
you have jacoby elllsbury to save them
