The Yankees will activate first baseman Luke Voit from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweets. The club cleared room for Voit on Friday by optioning infielder Breyvic Valera to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
It’s not apparent from looking at the Yankees’ major league-best 58-31 record, but long-term injuries to core players have haunted them all season. Voit, however, is returning to their lineup in short order after going to the IL on July 2 (retroactive to June 30) with an abdominal strain. Before that, Voit was continuing his emerge as one of the majors’ best offensive first basemen with a .280/.393/.509 line and 17 home runs in 349 plate appearances. The Yankees primarily relied on Edwin Encarnacion and DJ LeMahieu at first in Voit’s absence.
Unfortunately for New York, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton won’t return to its lineup in the near future. Stanton, who has dealt with a series of injuries this year and played in just nine games, went back to the IL on June 26 with a PCL strain in his right knee. At the time, general manager Brian Cashman cast doubt on the possibility of Stanton returning in July. Stanton still hasn’t resumed baseball activities, according to Hoch, so a July return does indeed look out of the question. The Yankees have gotten through Stanton’s latest injury with the aid of a hot streak from his replacement in left field, Brett Gardner.
While the Yankees’ offense has barely had Stanton this season, the team’s bullpen hasn’t gotten a single pitch from right-hander Dellin Betances. The four-time All-Star setup man first dealt with a bone spur in his shoulder before suffering a lat injury, though there is progress to report: Betances is slated to begin a throwing program Monday, per Hoch. The solid season-long performances of Adam Ottavino, Zach Britton and Tommy Kahnle have helped the Yankees build a sturdy bridge to closer Aroldis Chapman even without Betances.
pasha2k
Now I winder if indeed Stanton uses PEDs, cuz those injuries fit, as the do with Ellsbury. We’ll never know but we can speculate.
robluca21
How do those injuries have anything to do with steroids .. please elaborate on your theory
nyyjack
Overuse of steroids causes break down of connective tissue suck as tendons and ligaments making everything they connect to weaker.
nyyjack
Such, not suck
robluca21
That’s not true . I’ve cycled before . There are a ton of misconceptions regarding steroids
RGSM
That’s NOT accurate regarding overuse of steroids…
Anti-inflammatory steroids (not anabolic steroids) injected repeatedly into the same area to help an injury or arthritis can do that in the affected area.
That’s why Orthopedists limit the number of cortisone injections Sabathia can get in his knee each year.
HUGE difference.
djpiglatin
Maybe since we don’t know we shouldn’t speculate.
adamontheshore
Perfect response!
Hiro
We can all still speculate because we don’t know.
Codeeg
I speculate Hiro was never educated past second grade.
Gasu1
We can speculate that you have horns. Since we don’t know.

There are so many layers of stupidity to this comment. I wanted to pick one and crush it, but, alas, became overwhelmed.
cptstupendous
Crush it if you feel your point will hold up. Pashka2k’s opinion is valid and does hold up to some scrutiny. It may not be a true representation of the actual facts but, as theories go, it holds some validity.
toomuchpie
No it doesn’t.
Codeeg
Hey I injured my back, am I on steroids?
Gasu1
” It may not be a true representation of the actual facts but, as theories go, it holds some validity.” Can we still use the word “gobbledygook” in 2019?

Link is to the wrong Zach Britton

At least the Marlins will have to pay part of his salary while he spends the rest of his career on the IL.
deweybelongsinthehall
Very small part. Getting Stanton was a Papa Steinbrenner type of move. Yanks can obviously absorb it but it will eventually hurt like Boston’s bad contracts prevented them from getting the reliever they needed this off season. Despite being a Sox fan, I wish there was a salary cap, true revenue sharing or some other method so all teams would have an opportunity. Fans deserve a real chance. In the NFL, I follow the Packers. Even though the Brewers have done reasonably well in recent years, the last title they won was in 82.
thegreatcerealfamine
First off dewey I’m surprised you’re not a Patriots fan. Second it is indeed a small part of the huge salary that will be due to a offed injured slugger who’s best position is DH, and will only be more dependent on being a DH as he gets older. The smartest move the new Marlins owners overwhelming made to date was getting out from under the Stanton contract.
robluca21
How is Stanton a DH? He has positive grades and metrics throughout his career defensively. I dont know why people assume hes best suited as a DH
CardsNation5
I’m a Patriots fan
Codeeg
Maybe so he stays healthier and gets more at bats? That’s all I see
PopeMarley
Stanton has been at league average in some metrics, and below average in most. Stanton has never been toward tops in anything for right fielders other than offensive numbers. He’s never consistently played LF, and the Yankees have been totally reluctant to play him there, plus all of the injuries. So yea that all speaks to a player preferably being use as a DH.
thecoffinnail
Judge is a far superior defender and should be moved to LF with Stanton playing RF when he can manage to stay healthy. I still don’t understand why they traded for Stanton and his decade long contract. He had shown to be injury prone in Miami. The Yankees had Frazier who was almost ready and Florial a few years away. They should have invested that $25m in pitching (imho) while picking up a solid corner OF for less than 1/3 of the money Stanton gets. Guys like Adam Jones and Brantley have been getting peanuts in free agency the last few years.
Matthew Heywood
Do you mean pennant? Because the brewers lost the World Series to the cardinals in 82.
uncle mike
He means the American League Pennant in ‘82. The Cardinals have done the same thing as Boston has done. Except John Mozeliak has strapped the Cardinals down on bad contracts for the past 4 years, plus in the future for 3 more years!!! The chunk of bad contracts John Mozeliak has dealt the Cardinals will restrict them from obtaining impact players now… and for the next 4 years financially!!!
Fg-3
Gio will be back.. he’s 29 he might never hit 50 for yanks. But he’s a force when he’s in lineup. And last time I checked we’re 9 up on sox and 6.5 up on Tampa. Stanton needs to heal up. Gardy is doing great in his spot. Edwin and Luke And Judge need to step up. And of course all the haters will say we desperately need pitching. German is 11-2 and we will hopefully see sevy and dellin. This team is stacked up. Youngish and looking forward to a date with the Dodgers in the ws
thegreatcerealfamine
“And of course all the haters will say we need pitching. German is 11-2 and we will hopefully see sevy and dellin.” Everyone is saying the Yankees need pitching, because of the past two playoff exits. Severino can’t be counted on, nor Betances for that matter. German is not the pitcher they need to get them to the series, because of the innings increase that will see a projected downturn. The Yankees need a strong front of the rotation pitcher to get them past the Astros, and maybe even the Red Sox first. Just because people point out the Yankees biggest needs in no way makes them “haters”.
fitsiqis65
Excellent! Thanks. You get it most don’t.
jrad2007
Stanton is making a ton of money for a guy who’s played 145 or more games 4 times and this is his 10th season.
Codeeg
Is it his fault or the team offering him money?
I definitely don’t think he’s faking any injuries.
PopeMarley
I don’t see where anybody was implying he was faking any injuries.
Gasu1
They don’t need to do a thing to make the playoffs. But the pitching is very thin for the post-season. Yankee fans are looking for another championship. , right?
Yankeedynasty
On the Radio, Susie Walkman said that Voit had hurt the “core thingys in his tummy.” Wow
driftcat28 2
I cannot stand Susie Waldmen whatsoever. She’s makes terrible comments, usually wrong about facts. She’ll say it’s a day game when it’s clearly night. How she’s been on air for so long is mind boggling
goldenmisfit
This is the difference between the general managers in New York. Cashman always find diamonds in the rough where Brody was banking on big names past their prime’s.
yankeemanuno23
The Stanton trade was a jewel for the Marlins and I predicted a bust for Yanks. Sincerely doubt Stanton’s best years a ahead of him. And yes he is mostly a DH in AL and w NYY. It’s a VERY great deal for Stanton not for NYY. Roids effect? Maybe
PopeMarley
If they could only deal him to a west coast AL team at the deadline. Hello Angels.
