The Yankees have placed outfielder Brett Gardner on the 10-day IL due to left knee inflammation, as per a team press release. Gardner’s placement is retroactive to July 22. Left-hander Stephen Tarpley will take Gardner’s spot on New York’s 25-man roster.
One of the only Yankees who hadn’t yet missed time due to injury this season, today’s placement marks the durable Gardner’s first trip to the injured list since 2012. The longtime pinstripes fixture has bounced back from a down year in 2018 to become one of New York’s more underrated performers, hitting .243/.325/.460 over 354 plate appearances. That slugging percentage represents by far a new personal best for Gardner over his 12 MLB seasons, and with 15 homers already, he seems like a safe bet to eclipse his career high of 21 home runs in a season.
Mike Tauchman looks to get the bulk of left field duty while Gardner is out, and Cameron Maybin is also nearing his own activation from the injured list. Prospect Clint Frazier also looms at Triple-A, though Frazier has also often been mentioned in trade rumors and could be on the move prior to the deadline.
Here’s Tauchman’s moment to Luke Voit 2018.
Tauchman has already been killing it, hitting over .500 last 12 games.
That’s quite the thumping the Red Sox gave Tanaka tonight.
I don’t wish injuries on anyone. But this RS fan will not miss him for the next four days.
Yankees HATE Clint Frazier.
H-A-T-E
Yay 2 man bench
It’s just temporary. Maybin will be back very soon. Already started his rehab assignment at AAA.
Frazier should play more and whine less. Honestly, Frazier was initially traded to the Yankees because he had some real heat because of his attitude. It took a while but it finally showed on a national stage. Chances are great you’ll see him in a Mets uniform sooner than you think. He will fit right in that soap opera!
That’s the perfect place for him
Frazier has tanked (maybe purposely) since being sent down. Maybin is probably almost ready. B-Bye mr whiny pants.
He’s hit .378 the last 10 games with 4 HR’s. He’s got an overall .853 OPS in AAA.
He’s back on track.
He’s as good as gone.
Back to the weed with that comment….Frazier very well may be used for a pitching trade, or maybe he isn’t and will be the replacement for Gardy in LF in 2020.
God I hope not on the latter.
Why in the world would he purposely perform poorly? He would be slitting his own wrist. Makes no sense. Maybe he sulked a bit but his bat has awaken. He’s got a .853 OPS in AAA right now.
I think people need to give Frazier a break. He’s so eager to make up for lost time due to the concussion and he’s learning what it’s like to be an everyday player off the field. I don’t know if he has a big brother on the team but he needs one. If not traded for a starter then I would love to see him back up again.
Puig for Frazier and another piece anyone?
NO…He’s talented but don’t need a major pain and a prima donna on the roster.
What would be the purpose of making such a deal for the Yankees? Puig is a free agent after this year; Frazier is a controllable piece. Yankees need pitching, particularly starting pitching. Puig is a corner outfielder.
Cashman is a master of moving pitchers up and down from AAA. Tarpley, Holder, Green, Harvey, Hale, and Cortes. They are his low leverage pitchers, Time to improve the pen for the stretch run. I think Cashman adds a starter and a relief pitcher this week. Add Sevy and Betances and this team is loaded for Bear.
Great. Hope this is for the rest of the season. Gardner stinks.
Brett Garbage!
I don’t wish any baseball player to get hurt. But I hope Gardner never comes back.
@louiebeans and @woodlawn
i truly say this in a heartfelt manner. you both are pieces of feeces to hope that Gardners inuury is severe emitt m enough to wish him a forced retirement. is he a star? no. is he a solid player that plays hard? yes. do i want him to start in LF? no. but up to this point he’s been a lifesaver considering how every single OF has been injured. i hope you’re not yankee fans.
I could be worse; they could cheer for two teams in the same sport, and even worse if they play in the same conference.
@werealljustguestshere Why are you worried about it? Maybe I’m a long-time fan of one team and became a fan of another because I have a good buddy that plays for that team? But when it comes to baseball, and this is a baseball related website, I only route for the Yanks and anybody that plays against the Red Sox. There will never be any delineation from that.
Why would I be worried about you being indecisive? People fight their feelings every day. I only wish you luck.
Not fighting any feelings at all my guy.. I’m content.
Your putting words in my mouth. I’m hoping more of a blessing to have Frazier play or even Maybin now.
Over the years I seen Gardner block and keep the Yankees from getting an upgrade over a average ball player AKA Brett Garbage. Now I finally hope it’s someone else time to shine. It’s time for Garbage to never come back.
Who in their right minds wants to see a buck twelve strike out 13 times in the playoffs?
You actually think running Brett Garbage out there with the current SP staff is going to get different results? That’s the definition of insanity!
Throw Brett Garbage right into the Garbage and actually go out and sign SP that can give you close to 180 inning pitches for the season..
Nobody on this team for the past week or so can get outta the third inning. You kidding me or what?
@louiebeans what does Gardner have to do with SP? Nada.
@louiebeans Dude, Gardner’s contract isn’t keeping Cashman from going out to get someone else. My guess is that Cashman brought him back to place-hold PF until Frazier knocked the rust off in AAA after being injured most of 2018. Not his fault that injuries pushed him into a full-time role.
That being said, he’s playing above average defense and with Hicks and Didi out for most of the year, he has the most homers of any lefty in the lineup. Not sure what the beef is with you people.
I wanted the Yanks to sign one of Harper, Brantley or Markakis and bring back Gardner as a 4th OF. It didn’t happen so it is what it is.
But to say Gardner is “blocking” anyone is a complete joke and an odd thing to say. If the Yanks can still spend and function with a guy like Ellsbury giving you NOTHING and eating up $20 mil per then trust me when I say Gardner is their because they want him to be not because he’s blocking anyone or his contract is untradeable. They could’ve let him walk last year if they wanted to. Again, he wasn’t brought back to be a starter for the whole season. Injuries, injuries, injuries., And thank God we had him.
Who cares he’ll strike out a dozen times in the post season. Blessing in disguise.
You all kidding me ?!
