In a refreshingly candid interview with Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres outfielder Wil Myers gave several quotes providing insight into the mind of an established ballplayer who has fallen precipitously on hard times on the diamond.
“It’s not something that I ever saw coming, especially to have an All-Star year and then three years later not be playing,” Myers said. “It’s definitely tough. This is one of the things that hurts your pride. This is what I’ve been good at since I was five-years-old.
By “something,” Myers is referring to his sudden inability to do the things that have made him a highly compensated professional athlete. On the 2019 season, Myers–always a strikeout-prone hitter–has been felled by way of the “K” an astonishing 111 times in his 270 at-bats. With the exception of Myers’ 2014 season–when he was hindered by a lingering wrist injury–this year’s output would represent career-low marks in wRC+ (87), OPS (.696), and batting average (.211).
More alarmingly, it’s difficult to find evidence that Myers’ poor production is simply the result of poor luck or context. His .306 BABIP is right around his career average; the same is true for his hard-hit rate (43.1%). His wOBA of .305 isn’t shockingly far from his .323 xwOBA. Unfortunately, the only readily available explanation seems to be “between the ears,” and Myers spoke on how his struggles have affected his confidence.
“No matter how hard you try, it seems like you’re digging a bigger hole,” Myers said. “So I definitely have been pissed off. I can’t stand sitting the bench. I hate it. I really do. It’s just terrible. I’ve never done it before.”
Taken out of context, those quotes may simply sound like the venting of a frustrated ballplayer disgruntled over lack of playing time. However, Acee’s article actually includes some revelatory comments that indicate Myers’ willingness to do what’s best for the organization that signed him to a six-year, $86.5MM extension that begins to escalate into $20MM annual territory beginning next year.
Of a possible demotion to the minor leagues–which Myers, as a veteran player, has the right to refuse–the outfielder indicated, at least, openness: “I can’t sit here and lie and pretend like I haven’t thought like, ‘Maybe if I had some at-bats there, it might get better,’ ” Myers acknowledged. “But, you know, what, that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to bring value to this team right now.”
Though the extension handed to Myers by GM AJ Preller has become a rightful punching bag of analysts and fans alike, the outfielder’s sudden, prime-year struggles are fascinatingly inexplicable. Between 2015 and 2018, it could have been argued that Myers was, if nothing else, a model of consistency: his wRC+ in that span never dipped below 107 or above 115; his slugging percentage in that span checked in with a high mark of .464 and a low mark of .427. Heading into the season at age 28, Myers may not have been the superstar the team forecasted when it handed him a sizable extension, but he was still a thoroughly playable piece.
Suddenly, though, Myers’ ability to “bring value to the team” will hinge largely on the play of his teammates. The emergence of Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe as quality big league hitters–along with the improving play of Manuel Margot–have left him without much of a spot in the outfield, while the organization’s decision to sign Eric Hosmer to an eight-year, $144MM deal in 2018 categorically moved Myers off of first base. Without many available at-bats within immediate reach, Myers could have a tough time breaking out of this prolonged 2019 slump.
sdsuphilip
A 323 xWOBA is league average, so while he hasn’t been good he’s been ok with the bat
Eightball611
I agree the production is there too. He may not be a 20 mil. player anymore but most contracts signed are back loaded.
deweybelongsinthehall
Never was except to the Padres.
Show Me Your Tatis
At this point he needs to just retire gracefully like Gil Meche.
diddlez
Myer’s will figure it out. Chris Davis on the other hand needs to retire.
SuperSinker
Would you say no to that money lol come on
Ejemp2006
Would love to see him focus his attention on becoming an Al Kaline like outfielder. Similar to how Gordon in Kansas became a great outfielder, shear preparation and hustle.
He has a lot of baseball left and a sweet swing that actually still has potential. Just set your mind on fielding.
scarfish
I find tremendous value in what was said here about Gil meche. Great reply.
antibelt
Gil Meche was in the last year of his contract, and was injured, so he wasn’t going to play that year. He decided to rehab at home and not collect salary. Not the same circumstances.
Strike Four
Classic “getting effed by the old school” type, same as Piscotty. If you have power, you cant be trying to hit line drives, you gotta go for the big flies. Hitters like this keep having these kinds of problems while ones who get it (like JDM, Muncy, Hoskins etc,), thrive.
Joseph12992
Are you saying he is getting screwed by the launch angle stuff or that he needs to get on board?
SuperSinker
No idea. Line drives also have a launch angle and are also literally fly balls lol so.. unclear
VegasSDfan
How is a line drive a fly ball?
They are not the same.
earmbrister
Are they a ground ball?
Daynlokki
Just because they aren’t a grounder doesn’t make them a fly ball. That’s like saying statistically liners and infield pop outs are the same. There is a reason there is a stat called LINE DRIVE percentage separate from grounders and fly balls.
1/10 trolling.
bjupton100
,They’re not flyballs. Players hit 700 on balls in play that are linedrives, not grounders or flyballs. They problem is certain linedrives are nothing but easily caught outs, hit in in the air more or less on those and most will be fine. SD by the way should be perfect for linedrives hitters. Myers, Gore, cash and one more arm to TB for whatever they give you.

“it is fascinating to see a player in his prime struggle so suddenly and inexplicably”
I guess 33 isn’t really your prime anymore, but Dexter Fowler’s abysmal season last year (.576 OPS, 59 OPS+) and subsequent return to form this year (.757 OPS, 101 OPS+) has been equally as fascinating. He’s got to be a lock for comeback player of the year.
It’s also strange to see Myer’s struggle in a year where offense has never been easier to come by.
Eightball611
Myers is 28 not 33.
On your last comment, maybe he’s been this productive this season because off the offense boom. His numbers could be worse….
sdsuphilip
he means fowler
nowheretogobutup
He plays like he’s 53, guy is a waste nobody in their right mind would trade for him unless we got another player who has the same contract and is also a dud
earmbrister
Fiddles, how do you figure Fowler’s return to be merely an average player warrants comeback player of the year recognition? An OPS+ of 101 is Joe Average.
damascusj
Dude strikes out like it’s going outta style and he needs to get his Ks in
James Midway
The only guessing I do when he is batting is if he is going to strike out looking or swinging. Seems looking tends to be the better bet.
nypadre66
and it’s not like this year is the anomaly. He’s always been prone to K looking, especially frustrating with men on base.
BellingersJocStrip
Imagine where the Padres would be if they didn’t shell out terrible contracts. Can’t wait till they give Bumgarner or Porcello a massive contract this offseason.
MasterShake
To paraphrase “I’m old, I suck. But someone will overlay for me. Baseball baby!!”
lsujedi
Old? How old do you think he is?
lsujedi
Needs to go to Colorado. Petco isn’t a great spot for him.
Tmandolfan
Would love to see the Phillies pick him up for a platoon with Haseley. Phils can take on the bulk of his remaining salary and send the Pads a couple lottery tickets.
Show Me Your Tatis
You don’t even need to send lottery tickets. Just take the contract and we’ll leave it at that.
RicoD
I love how so many people on this site suggests platooning players. No GM will spend 10-20 mill a year for someone to platoon.
joedirte4life
I can see the Mets getting dooped into trading for him like they did Cano
blackleather
goodbye, Wil Myers….
Polish Hammer
Wonder if the Nats would trade Scherzer straight up for him? Or maybe Trout if we throw in a A catcher and a SS at AA…
SFGiants74
That’s really light on the Nats end. Throw in Bryce Harper and you got a deal. Why would the Padres want Trout? He was good 4 years ago.
nowheretogobutup
What I would trade half the Padres team for Trout
angelsinthetroutfield
I propose a 3-team deal between CLE/LAA/SD
SD- Trevor Bauer
LAA- Wil Myers (pays entire contract) & Francisco Mejia
CLE- Justin Upton, 55 rated SP prospect from SD, & $10-15m from SD
SD is probably the team to say no. Plus Upton has a full NTC so he could also nix it.
Ejemp2006
Angels love Upton. They keep their aging stars. It sells tickets in Anaheim.
angelsinthetroutfield
Sure we do
Perksy
Angels and SF giants do not rebuild. Not in their DNA.
antibelt
Giants only won 3 World Series in last 10 with homegrown talent, but sure, whatever you say. Smh
angelsinthetroutfield
Not really a rebuild move though. Mejia helps immediately and, with Adell on the horizon, the impact of losing an OF bat is suppressed.
nowheretogobutup
that was yesterday what about today and the last four years
terry g
I see all 3 saying no.
angelsinthetroutfield
Maybe but I can see benefits for all 3.
SD gets out of a bad contract and gets a top of the rotation arm for the WC run plus 2020. They lose two potential regulars but their prospect depth at SP and C make it stings less.
LAA get their C of the future and a former All-Star with a bit of salary relief. Obviously they’re taking a chance on Myers rebounding but the reward of Mejia makes the risk worthwhile.
CLE gets an OF bat to bolster an area of weakness, some $$ to help digest a larger salary, and a SP prospect to restock the the well after Bauer leaves.
Polish Hammer
I propose you put down the crack pipe.
angelsinthetroutfield
Useless
nowheretogobutup
Useless is being nice, he just doesn’t care and worse he thinks he’s good, send him to EP for some good Mexican food and bulk up he looks frail
VegasSDfan
The length and amount of Myers contract baffles me. Had we signed Tatis going into arbitration to a contract I would agree.
Myers had one good year and then we over paid him.
nypadre66
If it weren’t Preller’s doing, he’d be gone by now, similar to how he paid the Cardinals to take Gyorko.
padreforlife
Preller is the disaster Myers sucks. Hosmer has 4 homers since June he’s at best 5th best 1B in NL. Preller paying him as #1 highest paid 1B
csspackler
Alvin?
420ambassador
lollerbate. man, i completely forgot about that guy. wonder how many other of those ole’ knuckleheads are still running around here with a different alias
Show Me Your Tatis
padreforlife is like for real mentally ill. Alvin was just incredibly and stubbornly short-sighted.
nowheretogobutup
Thanks to AJ another stupid by our GM, Myers is stuck with being a bench player period. He needs to put on about 20 lbs of muscle and get off the yoga trip
steelerbravenation
i wonder if a Detroit would be interested in a deal for Myers if they gave them 2 prospects to go with him and Detroit gave Boyd and Zimmerman
Myers seems like he has the ability to bounce back snd Detroit is rebuilding so they can afford him some at bats and hope he turns into a tradable asset down the road
its_happening
That would mean paying Myers an additional 2 seasons of over 22-mil plus Cabrera’s salary. I wouldn’t do it if I were Detroit. Otherwise they’d be saying to their fanbase they aren’t contending until 2023.
Ejemp2006
As a Detroit fan, I think I speak for the majority when I say we already know our Tigers won’t compete again until they win another series of lucky lottery tickets. It is apparent there is no real time table or plan, other than get young players and hope some of them turn into stars.
Myers does not fit that mold.
SFGiants74
Well duh. If you are strike out prone, your offense is going to suck in the majors.
Daynlokki
Tell that to Gallo.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
“This is one of the things that hurts your pride.”
“I can’t sit here and lie and pretend like I haven’t thought like, ‘Maybe if I had some at-bats there, it might get better,’ ” Myers acknowledged. “But, you know, what, that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to bring value to this team right now.”
Pride comes long after the fall, too.
Going to the minors to try to improve would be the smart move, but his pride will not allow it.
bjupton100
it sounds like he is willing to and if you read it, it states he’s allowed to block a send down.
bbatardo
People focus on the contract but it was highly backlogged. If you average it they gave him 14 million a yeah which isn’t absurd for his previous production. Myers just needs to quit striking out so much really.
nowheretogobutup
Myers should be cut period eat his contract and get someone from EP that shuldn’t be too hard
Central Valley
Brandon Belt for Wil Myers????
hoosierhysteria
A good friend goes to spring training…long time premium seat holder. He is around the players a lot. He tells me: Myers is the single dumbest player I have ever been around. You can’t fix dumb. Why didn’t Preller see this? I heard Myers on a radio interview tell the announcer that the best Mexican food is in North Carolina and he missed. He became a laughing stock! He makes dumb plays repeatedly in the field…base running mistakes. Hedges can’t hit…but he is smart…can play his position…Myers strike outs are the tip of the iceberg. Trade him today or send him to the minors. He had 2 doubles last night so he will probably be in line up for the next week.
basquiat
Certainly one of the bigger prospect flops.
lebowskiachiever
Yikes, next year the Padres will be paying $78.5 million to Myers, Hosmer, and Machado and will be lucky to get 5 WAR out of them combined. After this year the Padres owe $170.5 million to Will Myers and Eric Hosmer plus $288 million to Machado, none of whom figure to get any better than they are today. Those are franchise crippling numbers.
bjupton100
That is a lot. It’s the time to spend for this franchise. They have a solid core and money to burn. The fans will start supporting them more while the prospects keep coming up.
lebowskiachiever
Unfortunately, neither the “money to burn: not “solid core” are really true. Tatis is going to be a superstar – is one already. Machado is a great player. But that is pretty much it for the core. Renfroe and Reyes are defensively challenged corner outfielders who are all-or-nothing hitters and don’t project well going forward, And there is really no pitching beyond Paddack and Yates. And Paddack needs another pitch. As far as money goes, so much of the payroll is tied up in those three deals that flexibility is severely limited to get the help needed.
nowheretogobutup
Totally agree move Reyes or Renfore, trade a few our ave. pitchers and at least one top 50 guy and bring in Thor or Bauer. This team will finish LAST again totally unacceptable too much there to finish with only 75 W;s. I’d give AJ one more year 2020 if this team doesn’t hit 90 W’s he’s gone and that means so is Green.
