The Twins have designated lefty Adalberto Mejia for assignment, tweets Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Mejia, 26, was once a borderline top-100 prospect in the Giants farm before being shipped for INF Eduardo Nunez in a 2016 deadline deal. The Twin Cities haven’t been kind to the big lefty – he was shelled in his initial 2017 taste, and then mostly stashed at Triple-A Rochester over the next two seasons. Mejia moved to the Twin bullpen this season, where he was hit hard (6.13 FIP, 7.04 BB/9) in 13 appearances the club before hitting the IL in mid-May.
Mejia has flashed back-of-the-rotation promise as recently as last season and is a good bet to latch on elsewhere in the coming days. Each of Minnesota’s rotation and pen were too deep for him this season, and the club has a host of capable hurlers in the minor-league wings. Righty Jake Odorizzi, back after a brief blister bout, will re-gain his seat in a rotation that’s posted the AL’s second-highest fWAR total in 2019; nearly each of the club’s five fulcrums are on pace for a career-best season.
if the orioles don’t claim him they evidently arent even trying to win.
Well they aren’t trying to win, so don’t be shocked.
W for the Giants. Got Shaun Anderson out of him.
For Nunez
And guess who they traded for nunez
And Gregory Santos- two of the best pitchers in the Giants system
Mejia is still young enough to big a AAA piece available for spot starts, etc. Liked him when he was in the Giants system.
The issue is he has no options remaining. He can’t be called up and sent back to AAA anymore.
Giants need to get him back. Zaidi is going to jump on him a lefty former top prospect who still has some juice.
Hmmm, two recent 40 man spots have been opened up, interesting.

Yes, makes you wonder just what is coming ??
I don’t know if there is one happening in the next 24 hours or anything but I can’t imagine they just removed one guy from the 40 man for no reason especially when they probably knew this Mejia move was coming.
Wherever he ends up, be prepared for 3-2 counts on every batter….so tedious to watch.
I agree 200%
The Twins’ pen was too deep for him. Ouch.
Cody Allen time
His spot went to Odorizzi who was kn the IL
Glad to see Falvey pull the trigger. Mejia was a mental midget.
I wish Mejia well, I thought he’d be better, but I still liked him.
Giants who are going to deal off relievers in the next few weeks should be calling the Giants to work our a deal to bring Mejia back to SF. Twins should be in on virtually all the Giants relievers as we near the deadline. Will Smith won’t come cheap even if he’s a rental. Can the Twins beat the Braves? Sam Dyson and Tony Watson fallback options.
Twins have the resources for Ken Giles & Marcus stroman. But do they believe Stroman moves the needle in their rotation? And do they want to leverage their prospects into more control? Interesting days ahead for the Twins…
I hope the Blue Jays find a way to work out a trade because I don’t think he’ll make it far on waivers.
This was overdue by a year or so. Mejia’s stuff is a little faster, but a little worse than Tommy Milone. Same type of pitcher, though. AAAA level who keeps getting a shot at MLB because he’s a southpaw.
On the same day that Nunez is released (DFA’d) by Boston, Mejia is DFA’d by Mn….. Eduardo will land somewhere in MLB and Mejia will land somewhere in AAA. The Twins’ attempt to transition Adalberto to the pen has been ugly, and his injury situation has not helped.
