The Rockies have officially released first baseman Mark Reynolds and right-handed pitcher Seunghwan Oh, according to Kyle Newman of the Denver Post. Both Reynolds and Oh had been designated for assignment by the club.
Reynolds’s second stint in Colorado will officially come to a close after a dreadful season in which he has managed an abysmal .170/.290/.311 slash line. While Reynolds has always been strikeout-prone, the problem has come to a head this season: the 35-year-old has struck out 57 times in 162 plate appearances. On the positive side, he has drawn 22 walks in that span, but that hasn’t translated to an above-average on-base percentage. In free agency, Reynolds could earn a minor-league contract with a team that hopes to tap into the power that allowed him to slug 30 home runs just two years ago.
Oh, meanwhile, was designated after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery. He had been playing out the final season of a two-year contract and was slated to reach free agency at season’s end. However, it’s far from a sure thing that he will play again in the Major Leagues. Oh has been rumored to be contemplating a return to the Korean Baseball Organization, where he pitched from 2005-2013. Now 37 years old, Oh has played four seasons in Major League Baseball and has pitched to a 3.31 ERA in 225 2/3 innings.

Reynolds is done. Running him out there hoping for power that probably won’t come back when you can have a player that gets on base more than twice his rate is a better option.

Doesn’t Reynolds hold the single season strike out record? I remember when the record was around 180 strikeouts in a season. Then this guy came out of nowhere and struck out something like 223 times. It almost seems hard to swing and miss that much. Like he really had to try. I feel like he had to consistently swing at pitches that even he knew were not going to be in the strike zone. Anyone else remember that? I would love to hear from a fan of the team he was on that season (I think it was either Arizona or Baltimore) to find out how frustrating it must have been to see your starting player swing at so much garbage and what the logic was behind it? I know he was always trying to crush bombs but still… 223 seems rather excessive. I remember when guys like Andruw Jones and Jeff Francoeur were striking out for my Braves and it was so frustrating watching them swing and miss for a strikeout on a low outside pitch in what seemed like almost every at bat and they were only striking out about 150-160 times a year. To surpass that amount by around 70 strikeouts must have been infuriating. Talk about a rally killer. I think Reynolds was playing third base back then.
Cat Mando
He holds the top spot at 223 and 4 of the top 20 single season K records. He lead the league 4 straight years 204, 223,211, 196 (3 with AZ and the last with the O’s.
The only reason he didn’t continue his streak was because he didn’t get the AB’s. After 2011 he never came close to 600 AB’s again.

Are you a fan of either of those teams. I know the info is available on baseball reference but I wonder whatbit was like as a fan watching him give away all of those at bats. I remember watching Andruw Jones strikeout around 150 times one season and it drove me crazy. A 2 strike low outside pitch did it to him every time. If Reynolds was striking out 70 more times than that the difference is pretty significant. Andruw hit over 50 homers in a season once and won 10 consecutive gold gloves at centerfield and it still made me mad. I couldn’t imagine what it was like having a guy that never hit 50 bombs or won a single gold glove strikeout an additional 70 times. What were his weaknesses? Did he always swing at the low outside pitch just like Andruw and Francoeur?

Welcome to the Phillies.

he can compete for at bats with LoMo in AAA if he so desires. no way he gets the call though

Would like the braves to get oh on a minor league deal
makaio6
Oh is out for the season. And probably going back to Korea.
bucketbrew35
He’s 2 homers short of 300 bombs.

Cheap knock off no brand name version of Adam Dunn
Looks like Dunn tastes almost like Dunn but the box just says home runs and strikeouts on it
