The Red Sox plan to activate first baseman Mitch Moreland from the injured list Tuesday, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe tweets. Unfortunately for Boston, though, it could lose infielder Michael Chavis at the same time. Manager Alex Cora isn’t ruling out an IL placement for Chavis, who’s dealing with back spasms, according to Speier.
Moreland has endured two IL stints going back to late May, the latest being for a quad strain. The 33-year-old has taken just two at-bats since May 26 as a result of his injuries. Moreland had gotten off to a nice start before then, with a .225/.316/.543 line (115 wRC+) and 13 home runs in 174 plate appearances.
The long-term absences of Moreland and fellow injured first baseman Steve Pearce left the position to Chavis – who had been at second base – for the past several weeks. While Chavis has hammered 16 HRs in 331 PA, a recent skid has dropped the 23-year-old rookie’s overall slash to a league-average .255/.329/.450 (100 wRC+). Chavis hasn’t played since Saturday.

I hope Chavis comes back strong. Remember Devers(my fave since his day one) was farmed out for a short time, returning stronger. Look at what a fantastic player he’s become in field n at the plate. Let’s hope same for Chavis. The Redsox have 7 outta 9 all home grown players, so they doing something’s right in the minors.

Offensively anyway… it’s too bad they didn’t have a couple of home grown arms ready either for the rotation or bullpen… though 1 or 2 maybe close. And Darwinzen has looked solid enough since coming up so fingers crossed they do have a couple more coming (Houck in particular). But otherwise yes… the homegrown offensive talent has been great. That’s one thing that really ticks me off is how everyone says “oh the Red Sox blew their farm system making trades, etc” and while yeah they dealt some decent guys — there’s a huge difference between just “blowing the system on trades” and what’s happened for the Sox where so many of their prospects are now just on the roster contributing!

Though he’s a few years away, don’t sleep on my Jay Groome my man

Yup, we don’t have a lot of top guys, but Groome, Casas, Duran, Hernandez, Dalbec, and Feltman will all be contributors at some point.

People that say that are only repeating what they heard, without looking at the trades. We did trade away a lot of prospects, and some might come back to haunt us, but how many would be playing for us right now?
Margot-Good but would be our #4 outfielder.
Shaw-worked out badly, but he still wouldn’t start.
Allen, Espinoza & Kopech are all in the category of ‘might come back to haunt us’
The only real loss so far is Moncada. But even then, while he is certainly better than Chavis, I am not exactly disappointed in Chavis’ rookie season.

It costs to get. Shaw is the obvious bust as the players given up including Shaw could have been used in other trades or allowed the team to trade someone else. As for Moncada and even Shaw, the team kept Devers. Enough said.

Devers is unique. He’s still only 22, younger than Chavis.

If they can catch some fire this week against Tampa & the Yanks it may be worth pulling the trigger on a Blockbuster before the Deadline.
It would not surprise me to see them move Bene, JBJ, JD, Porcello or Betts if the right combo became available and the right partner came forward.
We know the Sox have issues with the Luxury Tax however they have showed a willingness to be huge players regardless.
I think 1 B-Jose Abreu could help them. A solid pen guy not necessarily a closer–Phelps could be the person. Iglesias & Puig from Cincy in return for Bene and perhaps Durbin Feltman @ AA. I like Bene a lot and would hate to see him go but he could be a nice hometown player for the Reds.
They have time to put something together.

They won’t trade Benintendi he’s controllable at a low cost for a few years. Porcello is gone after this year and don’t expect much would come for him. JD they want to keep,as he’s been good in Boston (expect a reworking of contract).. JBJ has a reasonable salary and is not a FA till 2021, as is Mookie. The only one I see of this bunch maybe being a trade chip is Mookie, but they still have a year to do it if they are thinking about it. They would save Arb money if they do it this year, and that would free up probably 25-30 million he may get in Arb. Don’t be surprised if you see Price dangled out there. (even though they will have to eat some of the money). He’s a headache and his attitude may send him along the way.

Price to Braves might work but he has never pitched in NL.

Sometimes that is an advantage to an AL pitcher. They seem to get better in the NL.

No one is touching Price unless the team eats big money and unless you have a replacement in mind already, why do it? Taking aspirin for a Price headache is more manageable than having to fill multiple starting slots in the off season.

What’s with the wRC+ all the time now instead of OPS+?
Does wRC+ include fielding and base running? Looks like I will have to get my Masters in math to keep up with all these new analytics!

Time to scout, but am inclined to sit tight unless DD gets bowled over. Plenty of time now that they’re playing the Rays and Yankmes heads up. It’s all up to them now.
