The Red Sox have placed right-hander Steven Wright on the 10-day injured list to make room for newly-acquired pitcher Andrew Cashner on the active roster, reports Ian Browne of MLB.com. Cashner is in line to make his first start for Boston on Tuesday.
Wright suffered a contusion on his right foot after being hit by a comebacker in last night’s game. X-rays came back negative on Wright’s toe, but evidently the injury was significant enough to keep him out of commission for the time being, leaving the door open for Cashner to make his Red Sox debut.
Cashner, 32, was acquired yesterday from the Orioles, soundly ushering in trade season, one of baseball’s most exciting couple of weeks. He’s played the last season and a half in Baltimore after earning a two-year contract prior to 2018. He struggled mightily in the first year of that deal, though results have been slightly more promising in year two—evidently, enough to make the veteran righty desirable to a contending club. He’ll slot in as the team’s fifth starter, with Nathan Eovaldi shifting into the closer role when he makes his return to Major League games in the next week or so.
Wright’s stay on the active roster was a relatively brief one, after a suspension kept him out of action for 80 games and he made his return on June 26. Once again, though, he’ll find himself unavailable to play, this time owing to an injury. In 6 1/3 innings with the Red Sox, he’s allowed three home runs and four walks, compared to five strikeouts—all told, good for an 8.53 ERA.

Sure he’s injured.

Yeah, this is definitely a phantom IL.

I agree the IL placement seems suspect but what’s their end game with the move? If it’s completely made up why would Wright agree to it? Or is it just to get him some more time in AAA tuning up or really just to buy themselves 10 days before making another move? Idk the IL placement definitely seems as though it could be made up but at the same time what good does it really do?

Wright was removed the game mid-inning last night after getting struck by a line drive so yea probably legit 10 day dL.

Why would they need phantom IL? Plenty of fringe players they could demote, including Velasquez, Taylor, Hernandez, and Walden. All have an option left.

Screw the IL. Wright should be in the UL (Unemployment Line).

When a knuckleballer makes his name, it’s awfully hard for teams to let him go.

On the IL for whiplash

Seriously Wright has done nothing but help the other team win. He’s not another Tim Wakefield. I turn the game off when he’s pitching. He belongs on a permanent IL.

I think nostalgia might be clouding your thinking a little bit on Wakefield. He had 2 seasons with an ERA/FIP under 4.00 and he was usually around 4.50. His WHIP was usually around 1.3 or higher. He had a couple of great moments but he was nothing more than a back of the rotation pitcher. Wright is just about to turn 35. For some reason knuckleballers usually have their best seasons in their mid 30’s and stay fairly decent into their early 40’s. It’s too early to give up on him.

Exactly..and teams are not in the business of just dropping a player because have a few bad outings..ie.. Hector Velasquez..now that’s a head scratcher.
Occams_hairbrush
Well, I mean Wakefield won 200 games and Wright has won 24.. Wakefield has 2156 career strikeouts, Wright has 271. I don’t know, I think saying Wright is “not another Tim Wakefield” is pretty accurate.

He’s only pitched in 6 games.

He could help the Sox down the stretch this year assuming he gets the knuckle moving all over the place. Could help a starter like Chris Sale to get some rest and save some bullets if the Sox are in a position to do that.
