TODAY: These moves are now official.
YESTERDAY, 5:20pm: Hunter Wood will likely be recalled from Triple-A to take Alvarado’s roster spot, Topkin tweets.
4:01pm: The Rays will place right-hander Chaz Roe on the 10-day injured list prior to tomorrow’s game due to a flexor strain, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports (Twitter links). Righty Diego Castillo will be activated from the injured list himself on Friday to take Roe’s 25-man roster spot, though Tampa will still need to make one more move since Jose Alvarado is also now on the IL. Ji-Man Choi is expected to soon rejoin the team after recovering from a sprained ankle, Topkin tweets, but not until Saturday or Sunday.
Roe has missed a lot of bats (11.9 K/9) over his 27 1/3 relief innings this season, though an ungainly 6.6 BB/9 and .368 BABIP have resulted in a 5.27 ERA. That walk rate represents a concerning re-emergence of the control problems that hurt Roe earlier in his career, though he had seemingly put the free passes behind him after posting just a 2.9 BB/9 as part of his overall solid 2018 season (3.58 ERA over 50 1/3 IP) out of the Rays’ bullpen.
Castillo has been sidelined since June 23 due to a shoulder impingement, and the return of the 25-year-old and his 98mph fastball will provide a boost to Tampa Bay’s ninth-inning efforts. Castillo has earned seven saves as part of the Rays’ unofficial closer-by-committee system, with Alvarado (seven saves) and Emilio Pagan (five saves) also receiving the bulk of late-game save opportunities.

Ray’s will need to get everyone healthy and onboard as they play 17 of their next 20 games against the AL East.

They needed to snag Cole and Vasquez off the Pirates. They could have outbid the Astros on Cole and Alvarado (whom I really like) could have been the main piece for Vasquez. I know it’s asking a lot ,and I’d be happy with just Cole, but they were trading Cole anyway and I don’t believe any Pirate fan was happy with the return. The Rays could have offered Faria, Robertson, Duffy, Cluffo etc. I don’t know the exact players/prospects it would have taken but they could have gotten it done and their fans would still be mad but would have a more competitive team. Wendle could have been a player to be named later and the Pirates were thin in the infield. I’d hate to lose him but Lowe and Bell could have been added.

Do you just type out verbatim the thoughts that are running through your head? I’m so confused.
bjupton100
I sure as f##k don’t type out other people’s thoughts. What confused you’re dum#@$$ and I’ll try to clarify but not sure how much more plain I could have been.

Perhaps you should look up the definition of verbatim first. But go on then, clarify that stream of consciousness nonsense above regarding hypothetical trade scenarios that never happened. Totally makes a lot of sense.

Yikes…I’d run.

The Rays need to trade quickly for more relief help. Having D Castillo back is great, but hitters have figured him out and he needs to mix up pitches better than just using his 98mph gas. We have lots of redundant infield/OF prospects, can we wait till the deadline without falling out of the WC race? Eric Neander is an expert, but waiting might be the season.

Honeywell getting injured again has almost sunk this team. They can weather it I believe and reach the postseason but they’ll have to put McKay (already done) on the 40 man roster, and will probably have to do the same thing with McClanahan. It doesn’t seem like a big deal until you see that Kirby Yates as well as others were lost for that type of reason, 40 man crunch. McClanahan may never amount to much but for this season may end up a big part of the stretch run and postseason play.

Really need to suck it up and go after a Will Smith, Greene or Giles.

Rays need that shutdown closer. They have the prospects to do it. There is plenty of time, the need to focus on winning the division and they are going to need that closer.
They could use a right handed bat on the bench too. Yankees and Red Sox have a bunch of left handed pitchers. The Rays usually don’t go all in, but here they need to. They had a strong start, now they need to finish up strong and with all the deals that will be made, they need to win the trade war.
