The Reds just agreed to acquire right-hander Trevor Bauer from the Indians on Tuesday evening. Could the Reds now turn around and flip Bauer by Wednesday’s trade deadline? Not likely, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Meanwhile, two of Bauer’s new Cincinnati rotation mates – Alex Wood and the previously reported Tanner Roark – have drawn interest from the Phillies. Philly has “taken a very close look at” Wood, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Wood finally just made his season debut Sunday after months of back troubles, but the non-contending Reds could now attempt to get what they can for the pending free agent. The 28-year-old Wood, who’s on a $9.65MM salary, posted quality production with the Braves and Dodgers from 2013-18.
A smorgasbord of other pitcher-related rumors…
- Despite their recent run of excellence, the Giants are fielding calls and “engaging in negotiations” for starter Madison Bumgarner and reliever Will Smith, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Astros are reportedly among the teams chasing Bumgarner, but Smith is the more likely of the two to find himself in a new uniform by Wednesday, Schulman suggests. Although he’s a pending free agent, it’s likely Smith would bring back a significant return. He’s affordable ($4.225MM salary) and enjoying a marvelous season as the Giants’ closer.
- Back to Bauer, who was reportedly one of the Yankees’ preferred targets in their search for starting help. That may have been overblown, though, as the Yankees and Indians didn’t engage in “serious talks” over Bauer, Andy Martino of SNY relays.
- The asking price for Tigers closer Shane Greene is “far more reasonable” than the requests for other high-end relievers around the league, Feinsand tweets. Feinsand points to the Pirates’ Felipe Vazquez, the Reds’ Raisel Iglesias, the Mets’ Edwin Diaz and the Padres’ Kirby Yates as relievers who would be much harder to acquire, which isn’t surprising.
- Reliever Nick Anderson is among Marlins hurlers garnering interest, though he’ll be difficult to pry loose, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com writes. As a 29-year-old rookie, the hard-throwing Anderson has put up a 3.92 ERA with a much better 2.73 FIP in 43 2/3 frames this season. While Anderson has only induced ground balls at a 27.3 percent clip, he has helped offset that by racking up a prodigious 14.2 strikeouts against 3.3 walks per nine. Adding to his value, Anderson’s on a league-minimum salary and won’t be eligible for arbitration until after the 2021 season.
- The Giants and Nationals “have discussed” southpaw Drew Pomeranz, Jon Morosi of MLB.com tweets. Pomeranz, whom the Giants recently demoted to their bullpen amid a rough season, has also been drawing interest from elsewhere in recent days.

I do hope the National’s fans watched some of the Redsox games when Pom was trying to pitch in Boston. I wish Pom well but he has serious issues pitching, especially when it counts.
Jean Matrac
In 5 1/3 innings since moving to the pen Pomeranz has yet to give up a run.
SFGiants2010!
Just one hit and zero walks. Not too bad for a small sample size out of the pen.
BennyTheBoss
Will Smith and Madison Bumgarner to the Dodgers for Tyler White. Completely fair for both sides.

Not sure if serious…

Pomeranz has looked like a different pitcher since being demoted to the pen. I can see why certain teams are interested. I’d hate to see Bum get traded, but I’d get over it with a significant return. Smith seems more likely to go. Giants have a couple huge bullpen arms down on the farm. I’d like to see what Selmen can do with the big club.
thekid9
5+ innings? Called Small Sample size.
Don’t tell Mom your moving out of the basement just yet.
Hard to walk with four balls
You’re* bad at kid level grammar.

Chris Archer for Andrujar
Who hangs up first?
(Pirates fan who would love it)
24TheKid
The Yankees hang up before the Pirates even finish telling them the offer.
floridapinstripes
Still wishing that trade happened I see.
That won’t happen but I wish we got cole as well and yes I know it Adams and not andujar who was the hiccup
yanks02026
No the hiccup was that the Pirates wanted Andujar and Frazier
Goku the Knowledgable One
Bit of a logjam at 3B for you..
DJLM, Gio are both really good. Could see reason to flip Andruj for an innings eater
Frisco500
“Hello NY? We’d like to discuss Chris Arch…” click.

I didn’t know the NL was getting the DH already.
ColossusOfClout
Maybe not, Cashman was big on Archer when he was with the Rays.

No wayyyy

I really love trades that benefit both teams, it’s the way it should work, n no team gets fleeced.

1/2 year of Bumgarner realistically should be anywhere from Top 70 Prospect to Top 130. Depending who the Giants want that’s a reasonable price for Bum. Farhan is the type who would do the Toronto type of deal. He would prob want two Top 130 prospects instead of someone who was top 80-100. With all the backlash Toronto is getting, I think that’s off the tables now. Farhan will ask for a top 50-75 prospect and something else, perhaps a top 130 to go with the centerpiece. I don’t see the Yankees giving up Garcia. I also don’t see the Giants taking Florial s/p as the main piece of the return. Perhaps Houston or Atlanta have a better shot,
Djboy2898
Hands down one of the best pitchers in post season history!! The Giants wont give him up for garbage!! A top 10 prospect and a lower 15 to 20 and may e a single a to lower prospect at least and even maybe a mlb player right now!! Dont like it then stick with that starting rotation
BasesLoaded
This is the type of mentality that’s holding the Giants back 🙁
Empire Exoticz
What are you smoking? Half a season? Last time I checked we are past the 100th game out of 162, so no, it’s not half of a season. Also, that pitcher you described who good in the post season, most likely doesn’t exist anymore in Bumgarner.

Some people are so edgy. Could you please break it down to the hour and seconds? I’m glad people like you are around to correct people like me.

Top 70? Top 130? Those rankings are useless, and teams pay no attention to them. The FV ranking system is more valid. But every team has their own evaluations that may or not be in line with top prospect lists generated by the media. If the Giants get a guy, or guys, they like, that meet their perception of Bumgarner’s value, they’ll make a trade. But it will have nothing to do with any top prospect list
BasesLoaded
You took that way out of context. Teams in MLB use such systems. They don’t really put ranks on players, but they put them on slots like top 20, top 50, 70-100. Many consider players rank 70-130 to be pretty much the same. That’s why you didn’t hear me claim they won’t accept anyone past 99 or vice versa. I basically said the Giants would be smart to get someone on the lower end of the top 100. Other users here and across social media claim the Giants should get prospects in the top tiers and that’s just ridiculous.

Wrong link to Will Smith

Drew Pomeranz is really going to help the Nats surpass the Braves!!
IF Rizzo makes a move for a reliever I’d rather he give up an extra prospect or 2 and focus on a player that will still be under contract in 2020 and who won’t totally suck i.e. Colome, Greene, Joe Biagini from Toronto. If Rizzo think Pomeranz is the answer to the bullpen that’s been a disaster since really last June he may as well stand pat with what he has currently and hope they have another 10 weeks of magic left in them. Gerardo Parra was a Godsend for them earlier in the year, Fernando Rodney has been OK, effective, let’s not push our luck on aging veterans, especially in a position of need like the bullpen.
fletch
Come on Twins go get the Madbum! Falvey pick up the phone and give them a prospect for Pete’s sake!

“The asking price for Tigers closer Shane Greene is “far more reasonable” than the requests for other high-end relievers around the league.”
The asking price on a Kia tends to be “far more reasonable” than the asking price of a Ferrari.
BobSacamano
But a Kia will do the job for a lot less, so you can still afford that Chevelle
66TheNumberOfTheBest
If you think you can win the race with a Kia, more power to you.

fitsiqis65
naturally the yanks were not in on him, he’s really good, as in better than average and it would cost something to get him.
cash is allergic to this type of thing……….

And just who do you think the Yankees could have offered that would have been better than what they got?
The Indians did a great job with this trade.
fitsiqis65
I don’t disagree- my comment reflects that “the Yankees didn’t engage”. Meaning they didn’t even offer anything to be rejected.
Kudos to the Indians. I wish my GM who basically operates with no fiscal restraints has the testicular fortitude of their GM
Old User Name
It’s hard to say what really happened though. The media reports are usually wrong or incomplete. Most of what I have heard, teams are asking for Torees in any significant trade. If that’s the case, I don’t blame Cashman for not engaging.
Time is running out and I’m starting to get nervous. LOL
MrOF
Giants would be holding onto Bumgarner for all the wrong reasons at the expense of their future.
James7430
Agreed. They’re about to run into a buzzsaw with their upcoming schedule. They’re not actually in the wild card race when you consider the teams they have to leapfrog and the schedule. Smoke and mirrors.
milla
And so the prognosticators say the Giants have less than 10% chance of making the playoffs. But that’s much better than the 1% chance they had a month ago! I like how the Giants are playing even with last night’s loss. Not particularly worried about the schedule. Bochy is the best manager and inspires confidence in his players. It’s not a huge deficit to make up even if there are a lot of teams. They can tread water for a few weeks and will likely still be within striking distance in September. Perhaps best bullpen ever! In a similar way that the Mets won in 69 with great starting pitching and little else, the Giants could ride their bullpen and veteran leadership to another championship. Sure odds are still long, but I’d predict they are more like 20% to at least make the WC.
64' Yanks
After all said and done, the Yankees never had any serious talks with anyone unless Hal was talking to Cash!
biffpocoroba
A deal between the Nats and Giants will get done today. The only question is who the second pitcher will be in addition to Pomeranz.
Backatitagain
May not be enough but the Braves could send last years ace, with 2.5 arb years, Mike Foltynewicz and two MLB ready prospect pitchers in MLB top 100, Touki Toussaint and Bryse Wilson to the big apple for Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier. Braves have excess pitching and Folty with 95-99 heat may just be that starter the Yankees need for Houston.
