Phillies Acquire Jose Pirela

By Ty Bradley | July 27, 2019 at 1:01pm CDT

The Phillies have acquired Jose Pirela from the Padres for cash considerations, the team reports.

Pirela, 29, was designated for assignment Monday by the Friars. The one-time Yankee was a staple in the Padre lineup from 2017-18, a stretch bookended by an ugly .249/.300/.345 line in 473 plate appearances for the club. Pirela has experience at every position save catcher, shortstop, and center field, and has proven a capable defender at each. In 242 plate appearances for the mash unit that is the El Paso Chihuahuas this season, the 29-year-old did his best to stand out, slashing a hefty .353/.401/.674 with 18 homers for the club.

With the possible, small-sample exception of Brad Miller, Philadelphia’s secondary players haven’t offered much this season. Six of the Phils’ bench players have combined for -2.5 fWAR, a number that’ll surely need a boost if the club’s to nail down one of two hotly-contested NL Wild Card spots.

Righty Tommy Hunter was moved to the 60-Day IL to make room for Pirela on the 40-man.

This trade deadline is getting to be about as boring as last offseason. At this rate, the biggest deal come August 1 will be someone acquiring Ian Kennedy.

Bet you that’s not true. His own teammate is more likely to move and a more exciting addition.

He will give you innings that’s about it. It’s a prime arm for a team not going anywhere. I see too much Eric stultz and that’s not a good thing.

Better than calling up Mitch Walding while Miller and Bruce are out. Looks like he gets on base at a barely less than meh enough clip to be an almost serviceable fill-in if he gets the call.

trading cash for a utility player that has had strong majors numbers in that past and killed it in AAA this year, or making so few moves so far? Kletak has been a lot busier then most gms so far this year, (Smyly, Morin, Bruce, now Pirela) and has made just as few big moves as most teams in the league so far (0). what about this really sends your opinion on him over the edge.

Phillies dont need any more mediocre players, their farm is Filled with them. Klentak couldn’t even close the door on Harper, that was Middleton. He’s added mediocrity for the most part. The big names haven’t been all that good. So much for those analytics

GMs don’t really “close” on the big names, that is the owner in almost all cases. They have the last say.

Wasn’t Pirela the Padres “future 2B” before Urias and right after Asuaje?

No. That’s why they put him in left field. They actually moved solarte to 2nd instead. Then gave the keys to asuaje. Pirela is a liability on the field. His bat is subpar and over all is nothing more than a minor league player.

Pirela was never a top prospect. He was a flier when we had a void.

No he was a placeholder who had a career year with the bat in 2017 and appears to have had a love affair going on with Preller.

Feels like a decade too late. Fans don’t even care anymore. It was an outrage on how long it took to DFA him, should have been toast when rosters were re-shaping for the Rule V draft.

Remember when people thought the padres were going to make the playoffs in two seasons because they had the top farm system? How’s that looking?

I mean, they probably will… Pirela is 29 and unrelated to their huge stable of good young talent.

Just curious….. what stable of talent will be helping the padres in 2020? Morejon who dropped in prospect rankings down to 87? And has been pitching out of the bullpen in AA? Baez, who dropped completely out of the top 100 prospects and has been in the bullpen in AA also? Logan Allen who has been a disaster at both AAA and the majors, has dropped to 98 in the top 100 and likely to drop out completely with his performance so far…..

There is gore. And that’s it.

I bet they make it in 2020. They would really improve if they cashed in those prospect for Thor and got another major league pitcher… like sign MadBum in the off season. You don’t need prospects if you have a roster full of all stars.

Their prospects don’t have the value they had in the beginning of the year. Check out the updated prospect rankings. Baez dropped out of 100z Morejon down to 87. Logan Allen to 98.

Their “future stars” are dropping and dropping fast due to poor performance and partially due to injury

If bench players didn’t have negative fWAR, they wouldn’t be bench players. Just a theory.
